Camping near Dauphin Island
Dauphin Island is a barrier island at the mouth of Mobile Bay, connected to the Alabama mainland by a bridge and to the Fort Morgan peninsula by a vehicle ferry. It sits south of the city of Mobile and is known for uncrowded Gulf beaches, migratory birding, and a low-rise, uncommercialized feel compared with Gulf Shores or Orange Beach.
RV options are limited on the island itself, so most travelers choose between the town campground on the island and larger private resorts on the mainland approach through Coden and Theodore. Pelican Nest RV Resort and Campground sits near the island, while Bay Palms RV Resort, Winners Circle RV Resort, Bellingrath RV Park, and Mobile West RV Resort cluster on the mainland within driving distance of the causeway.
Expect flat, sandy sites with full hookups at most private parks, plus proximity to boat launches, fishing piers, and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. Sites near the water can be tight and shaded by live oaks, so measure your rig length before booking.
Things to do around Dauphin Island
Fort Gaines anchors the east end of the island and preserves a Civil War era masonry fort with cannons, tunnels, and blacksmith demonstrations, plus views across the Mobile Bay shipping channel. Nearby, the Alabama Aquarium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab features a 7,000 gallon stingray touch pool, a 10,000 square foot exhibit hall, and a Living Marsh Boardwalk covering four coastal Alabama habitats.
The 137-acre Audubon Bird Sanctuary sits within walking distance of the town campground and offers trails through maritime forest, dunes, and a freshwater lake. Families use the Public Beach for calm swimming, ride the Mobile Bay Ferry to Fort Morgan for a day trip, and book charter or pier fishing from the marina.
Indian Shell Mound Park, kayak rentals, and dolphin cruises round out a typical week.

December - February
61° / 46°F 127 mmMild; snowbird stays common; occasional cold snaps
Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel. March through May brings mild temperatures, active spring bird migration through the Audubon Sanctuary, and lower humidity than summer. Fall from late September through November delivers warm days, cooler nights, and some of the clearest skies of the year, though it overlaps with the peak of Atlantic hurricane season.
Summer is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and long beach days. Rainfall peaks in the June through August window on the central Gulf coast. Sites at island and near-island parks fill quickly around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day, so book well in advance.
Winter is mild by North American standards, with daytime highs often in the sixties Fahrenheit and only occasional freezes. Many parks stay open year-round and attract long-term snowbird guests from colder states, which can tighten availability for shorter stays between December and February.

Booking an RV site near Dauphin Island
Private parks on and around the island generally take reservations directly by phone or through their websites, and some use third-party platforms such as RoverPass. Pelican Nest RV Resort and Campground, Bay Palms RV Resort, Winners Circle RV Resort, Bellingrath RV Park, and Mobile West RV Resort each handle their own inventory, so policies on deposits, minimum stays, and cancellations vary by property.
The town-run Dauphin Island Campground accepts reservations by phone only, not by email or online, up to one year ahead, and requires a two-night non-refundable payment at booking with the balance due on arrival.
For holiday weekends, spring migration weeks, and the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, plan to reserve two to three months out. Confirm rig length limits and pet rules when you call.
What to expect on arrival
The drive onto Dauphin Island crosses the high Dauphin Island Bridge, roughly three miles long, from the mainland. The bridge is exposed to crosswinds, and traffic can back up on summer weekends. From Fort Morgan, the Mobile Bay Ferry is an alternative for rigs within posted length and weight limits, and reservations are recommended in peak season.
Most RV parks in the area offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, paved or gravel pads, and pool or bathhouse facilities. Cellular coverage is generally reliable, but Wi-Fi quality varies by park.
Bring bug spray for no-see-ums at dusk, a beach umbrella for shade, and a leash for pets, since leash rules are enforced on island beaches and at the Audubon Sanctuary. Fuel and groceries are limited on the island, so stock up in Mobile or along Highway 193.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Dauphin Island, AL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Dauphin Island, AL?
Good news: RV rental in Dauphin Island is one of the more affordable Gulf Coast getaways. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range $175 to $295, and luxury Class A rigs can hit $350+. You'll usually save the most by booking shoulder season (late September through early November or February through early March), when beach weather is still gorgeous but snowbird crowds have thinned. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book and look for hosts who include generator hours or beach gear in the base price. For a cheap RV rental Dauphin Island trip, a small travel trailer delivered to Dauphin Island Campground beats hotel rates on Bienville Boulevard every time.
townofdauphinisland.org/things-to-do/dauphin-island-campgroundWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Dauphin Island, AL?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Dauphin Island, Alabama. There is no special RV endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required in Alabama for any of the motorhomes or trailers on RVezy, including Class A coaches. RVezy's approved driver requirements generally mean renters need to be 25 or older, and your ID is verified right through the platform during booking, so there is no in-person paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto association before flying into Mobile Regional Airport, and you are ready to roll across the Dauphin Island Bridge.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my Dauphin Island RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in Dauphin Island booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on sunsets at the West End beach instead of worst-case scenarios. You choose the protection level that fits your comfort during checkout (the plan is set by RVezy, not the host), and it covers most damages to the vehicle during your trip. Whether you get a flat tire on the Dauphin Island Bridge or need a tow back from Fort Gaines, help is one phone call away. This built-in peace of mind is a big reason first-timers feel confident booking an RV camping Dauphin Island adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Dauphin Island RV trip?
You can book with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so there is a built-in safety net if plans shift. Refund details depend on how far out you cancel relative to your trip start date. On the Gulf Coast, hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and if a named storm threatens Dauphin Island, RVezy's support team will work with you on options. The full policy is laid out clearly in the RVezy Help Center, so you will know exactly where you stand before you click Book on that beachfront Dauphin Island listing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Dauphin Island RV rental?
Absolutely, Dauphin Island is one of the most dog-friendly beach towns on the Gulf Coast, and plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Dauphin Island options. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see listings that welcome dogs, and message the host about size or breed details before booking. Once you're here, leashed dogs are welcome on most of Dauphin Island's public beaches (a rarity on the Gulf), and the Audubon Bird Sanctuary's 6+ miles of trails are leash-friendly too. The 151-site Dauphin Island Campground also allows pets, with a secluded beachfront just for guests. Bring a long lead and a beach towel.
townofdauphinisland.org/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite on Dauphin Island?
Yes, and RV delivery Dauphin Island is hands-down the easiest way to start your trip, especially if you are flying into Mobile Regional Airport. Many RVezy hosts in the Mobile and Dauphin Island area will drive the RV across the Dauphin Island Bridge, set it up at your reserved site at Dauphin Island Campground or Pelican Nest RV Resort, level it, connect water, sewer, and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter for Delivery on RVezy, then check each host's delivery radius and fee. For first-time renters, paying the delivery fee is usually worth every penny.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dauphin%20Island%2C%20AlabamaHow far can I drive my Dauphin Island RV rental?
You have plenty of road to explore. Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day), with extra miles available at a small per-mile rate, and some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. From Dauphin Island, popular runs include Gulf Shores (about 75 miles via the Mobile Bay Ferry and Highway 180), Pensacola Beach (about 110 miles), New Orleans (about 155 miles west on I-10), and Destin (about 165 miles east). You've got excellent options for RV camping Dauphin Island. The 151-site Dauphin Island Campground at 109 Bienville Boulevard sits on a 155-acre park with secluded Gulf beachfront, 50-amp hookups, and the Audubon Bird Sanctuary right next door. For state-park lovers, Meaher State Park in Spanish Fort (about 50 miles north) has 61 sites on Mobile Bay, and Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores (about 75 miles east) has nearly 500 sites. Book early for spring break and October weekends.
alapark.com/parks/meaher-state-parkWhen is the best time to take an RV trip to Dauphin Island?
Dauphin Island is genuinely a year-round destination, but locals will tell you April through early June and mid-September through November are the sweet spots. Spring brings 70 to 80 degree days, low humidity, and one of the best songbird migrations in North America at the Audubon Sanctuary. Fall delivers warm Gulf water (still 75+ degrees in October), fewer crowds, and the famous Alabama Coastal BirdFest. Summer is hot and humid (highs near 90, water 84+) and perfect if you want bath-warm swimming, while winter stays mild (highs in the low 60s) and is popular with snowbirds. Avoid peak hurricane risk in September if storms make you nervous.
weather.gov/mob/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Dauphin Island a good idea?
It's a fantastic place for first time renting an RV. Dauphin Island has flat terrain, no mountain passes, no toll roads, and the drive in from I-10 down Highway 193 is a straight, easy 27 miles. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, the awning, and the dump station, so you're never left guessing. If the Dauphin Island Bridge (about 3 miles long) feels intimidating, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet, or just book delivery and skip the driving entirely. Plenty of first-timers do their whole trip without moving the RV once it's parked.
dot.state.al.us/What if something goes wrong with the RV during my Dauphin Island trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RV rental in Dauphin Island booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a dead battery on Bienville Boulevard, a flat tire near the Mobile Bay Ferry, or a generator hiccup at Pelican Nest is one phone call away from help. Your host is also your first lifeline for quirks specific to their RV, and most are quick to text back. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Save both numbers in your phone before crossing the Dauphin Island Bridge and you will be set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Dauphin Island?
An RV road trip from Dauphin Island puts the entire Gulf Coast at your doorstep. Hop the Mobile Bay Ferry over to Fort Morgan and Gulf Shores (about 75 miles total) for sugar-white beaches. Roll west on I-10 to Biloxi, MS (60 miles) for casinos and seafood, or push on to New Orleans (155 miles) for a long weekend. Head east to Pensacola Beach (110 miles) or all the way to Destin and 30A (165 to 200 miles). For a longer loop, Tallahassee is about 270 miles east. Travel into Mexico isn't covered by RVezy insurance, so keep your route within the US Gulf states and you're golden.
visitflorida.com/places-to-go/northwest/How much should I budget for fuel on a Dauphin Island RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, so it pays to plan. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class C motorhome, 6 to 8 mpg for a Class A, and 12 to 18 mpg for a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Alabama gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, often hovering around $2.90 to $3.20 per gallon. Fill up in Mobile or Theodore before crossing the Dauphin Island Bridge, since the island has limited fuel stations and prices tick higher. A 300-mile loop from Dauphin Island to Pensacola and back will run roughly $90 to $130 in fuel for a typical Class C.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground on Dauphin Island?
For Dauphin Island Campground, aim to reserve 3 to 6 months ahead for spring break (March), summer weekends, and October's BirdFest, when all 151 sites fill fast. Weekday and winter stays are usually available 2 to 4 weeks out. The campground books directly through its website and phone line (251-861-2742). For Alabama state parks like Meaher and Gulf State Park, use the Alabama State Parks reservation system, which opens bookings up to 11 months in advance. Pro tip: lock in your campsite before you finalize your RV rental in Dauphin Island, then share the site number with your host so they can confirm delivery logistics.
alapark.com/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like on and around Dauphin Island?
Driving on Dauphin Island is refreshingly mellow: flat, mostly two-lane roads, light traffic, and a posted 35 mph limit through town. The main thing to know is the Dauphin Island Bridge (officially the Gordon Persons Bridge), a roughly 3-mile span with a high arch that gets gusty in strong south winds, so check the marine forecast if you're driving a tall Class A. The Mobile Bay Ferry between the island's east end and Fort Morgan accepts RVs up to 40 feet (rates by length). Watch for sand drifting across Bienville Boulevard after storms, and remember that hurricane evacuations head north on Highway 193, so leave early if a system is approaching.
dot.state.al.us/What hookups and amenities will I find at Dauphin Island campgrounds?
You'll find solid infrastructure for RV camping Dauphin Island. Dauphin Island Campground offers 50-amp electric and water at all 150 sites, with 75 sites adding sewer hookups, plus hot showers, a dump station, laundry, a camp store, and free WiFi near the office. Pelican Nest RV Resort has full hookups (water, sewer, 50-amp) at every site, cable, WiFi, and a pool. Potable water fill stations are available at both campgrounds, and the on-island dump station is included with your stay. If you're boondocking off-island, the nearest Flying J with full RV services is in Theodore, about 30 miles north. Pack a 50-to-30 amp adapter just in case.
townofdauphinisland.org/things-to-do/dauphin-island-campgroundWhat's inside a typical Dauphin Island RV rental?
You'll be comfortable. A typical motorhome rental Dauphin Island sleeps 4 to 8 and includes a queen or king bed, bunk or convertible sleeping for kids, a full kitchen (fridge/freezer, 3-burner stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof-mounted AC (essential for Gulf Coast summers), furnace, and a dinette. Most listings include linens, dishes, pots, and basic cookware (confirm in the listing). Many have a TV, some have WiFi boosters or Starlink, and most include a generator for off-grid use, with hours either included or billed per hour. Smaller campervan rental Dauphin Island options trade space for fuel economy and easy bridge driving. Check each listing's amenity list for specifics.
energy.gov/energysaver/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Dauphin Island?
Hosts on RVezy make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons for an RV rental Alabama Gulf Coast trip include bed/bath linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, beach chairs and umbrellas, bikes, kayaks or paddleboards, portable grills, generator hours, and propane refills. Many hosts also offer dump and refill service so you can skip that chore at the end. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Mobile, Theodore, or nearby Baldwin County, with delivery to Dauphin Island Campground or Pelican Nest available for a flat fee. Mileage policies vary by listing (typically 100 to 150 free miles per day), and you can message the host before booking to confirm anything.
alabama.travel/places-to-go/dauphin-islandHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Dauphin Island on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, so there is no cash exchanged at pickup. A security deposit (set by each host, commonly $500 to $1,500) is pre-authorized on your card before the trip, not charged, and released after the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos and a short video of the interior, exterior, tires, and any existing scratches at pickup and again at drop-off, and review the mileage and generator hours with the host on both ends. Easy and transparent.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a local insider tip for visiting Dauphin Island in an RV?
Here is the move locals love: drive your RV onto the Mobile Bay Ferry at the east end of Dauphin Island and ride across to Fort Morgan, then loop back through Gulf Shores and Mobile for a one-day, no-backtrack scenic circle. The ferry accommodates RVs (rates are posted by vehicle length), the crossing takes about 40 minutes, and dolphins regularly surface alongside the boat. While you are on-island, do not miss the Estuarium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, sunset at the West End public beach, and a shrimp po'boy from one of the Bienville Boulevard seafood shacks. That is the kind of family RV trip Dauphin Island day everyone remembers.
