Camping near Florence, Alabama
Florence sits on the north bank of the Tennessee River in the Shoals region of northwest Alabama, at the foot of Wilson Dam and along Pickwick Lake. The area is a working river-town base for RV travelers: city parks, TVA reservoir shorelines, and private RV parks all sit within a short drive of downtown, and Joe Wheeler State Park lies about 27 miles east on Wheeler Lake.
Closest to the city center, Florence, AL RV Park and Hidden Creek Campground put travelers within reach of the riverfront, the University of North Alabama campus, and the music-history sites in Muscle Shoals. Heritage Acres RV Park offers additional hookup capacity on the Florence side of the river.
Across the river in Colbert County, Tuscumbia RV Park and Creekside Camp serve travelers headed for Ivy Green, the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, and FAME Recording Studios. Most sites in the area have 30/50-amp electric and water; full sewer availability varies by park, and some public campgrounds use a central dump station instead of individual sewer hookups.
Things to do around Florence
The Tennessee River and its impoundments, Pickwick Lake below Wilson Dam and Wheeler Lake above it, drive most of the outdoor activity. Boating, bass fishing, and paddling are the core draws, and the tailrace below Wilson Dam is a well-known fishery. The McFarland Park area connects to riverfront walking and biking routes in town.
Music history is the other reason people come. Downtown Florence has the W.C. Handy Birthplace and the Rosenbaum House, the only Frank Lloyd Wright building in Alabama. A short drive across the river reaches FAME Recording Studios, Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.
Families also use Florence as a base for day trips to Joe Wheeler State Park for swimming and hiking, and to Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge for winter waterfowl viewing.

Florence has a humid subtropical climate with hot, muggy summers and short, cool, wet winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with mild days, cooler nights, and lower humidity than midsummer. Early fall tends to be the driest and most settled stretch of the year.
Summer is peak camping season on the Tennessee River. Highs run into the upper 80s and low 90s Fahrenheit with high humidity, afternoon thunderstorms are common, and lake activity, tournaments, and festivals fill sites on weekends. Book well ahead for Memorial Day through Labor Day, especially at riverfront and state-park sites.
Winter is the shoulder season. Some public and TVA-managed campgrounds around the Shoals close or reduce operations from late fall through early spring, while private RV parks in and around Florence generally stay open year-round. Pickwick Lake is subject to seasonal flooding, and riverfront campgrounds can close on short notice when water levels rise, so confirm status before arrival.
How to book a campsite
Private parks around Florence, including Florence, AL RV Park, Hidden Creek Campground, Heritage Acres RV Park, Tuscumbia RV Park, and Creekside Camp, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites and common third-party booking platforms. Weekly and monthly stays are widely offered.
City of Florence campsites are reserved through the city's own online system rather than a federal portal. Joe Wheeler State Park and other Alabama state parks use the Alabama State Parks reservation system at reserve.alapark.com, with bookings accepted up to one year in advance.
For summer weekends, holiday weekends, and fishing-tournament dates, reserve as early as possible. Confirm rig length, hookup type, and any flood-related closures with the park before you arrive.
What to expect on arrival
Most RV sites in the Florence area sit on paved or gravel pads with picnic tables, 30/50-amp electric, and water. Full sewer at the site is common at private parks; some public and TVA-affiliated campgrounds route guests to a central dump station instead. Bathhouses with hot showers are standard.
Roads into riverfront parks can be narrow with tight turns, so larger rigs should ask for pull-through sites and check low-clearance routes in advance. Cell coverage is generally reliable in and around Florence, and grocery, fuel, and propane are easy to find on the US-72 and Cox Creek Parkway corridors.
Quiet hours, pet rules, and campfire policies vary by park. City-run sites typically restrict ground fires and require portable, raised fire pits, and some public riverfront campgrounds prohibit alcohol, so review park rules at check-in.

Refunds beyond that grace window depend on how far out your trip is, and exceptional events like severe spring weather in northern Alabama are reviewed by RVezy support. Because the policy is handled at the platform level, you will not see different rules from listing to listing. If your plans shift, sign in to your RVezy account to see your refund options clearly. Yes, RV delivery Florence guests can absolutely take advantage of. Many RVezy hosts will tow or drive the rig to your campsite at McFarland Park, Joe Wheeler State Park, or even a friend's driveway, then set it up, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. That makes it perfect if you are new to RVing or just want to skip the towing learning curve. Delivery fees are set by each host based on distance and RV type, and they are listed right on the listing page. florenceal.org/325/Parks-and-RecreationWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Florence, AL?
Florence shines for RV camping from mid-March through early June and again from September through early November, when daytime highs hover in the comfortable 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit range and humidity stays manageable. Summer (June to August) brings highs in the upper 80s and 90s with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, but it is also festival season, including the famous W.C. Handy Music Festival. Winters are mild, with daytime temps often in the 50s, so off-season RV trips are very doable. Fall is a local favorite for color along the Natchez Trace and Tennessee River bluffs. Pro tip: Book early-October dates a couple of months in advance, since this is peak shoulder season for the Shoals.
weather.gov/hun/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be able to handle a Florence trip?
You absolutely can, and Florence is one of the friendlier places to learn. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the propane, water, electrical, slide-outs, and dump procedures, plus answering any first time renting an RV nerves you might have. The roads around Florence are mostly flat to gently rolling, with wide two-lane state highways like AL-20 and AL-72 connecting the Quad Cities. If parallel parking a 30-footer feels intimidating, choose a host who offers delivery and setup. Pro tip: Pick a smaller travel trailer or Class C motorhome for your first RV camping Florence trip, and plan an easy first night at McFarland Park to get comfortable before heading farther afield.

You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on the Natchez Trace Parkway, a dead battery at Joe Wheeler State Park, or a tow back to Florence is one phone call away. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy messaging system, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. For mechanical questions, your host knows the RV best, so loop them in fast. Pro tip: Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway, and screenshot your host's contact info in case you hit a cell-signal dead spot in rural Lauderdale or Colbert County.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Florence RV rental across state lines or into Canada?

A weekend loop of 200 miles in a Class C will usually run $70 to $110 in fuel. McFarland Park sites are booked through the City of Florence and fill quickly for the W.C. Handy Music Festival in late July and graduation weekends at the University of North Alabama. The terrain is gently rolling, roads are wide, and traffic is light outside of UNA game days and the morning rush on Florence Boulevard. Watch for sudden thunderstorms in summer and the occasional patch of fog over the river in the early morning. The Natchez Trace Parkway has a 50 mph speed limit and prohibits commercial trucks, making it an exceptionally pleasant motorhome drive.
