Gilbertown camping overview
Gilbertown sits in Choctaw County in southwest Alabama, a rural stretch of pine forest and river bottoms between the Tombigbee River and the Alabama-Mississippi state line. RV travelers using Gilbertown as a base have a small but useful mix of camping options within a reasonable drive, ranging from a compact Alabama state park to larger reservoir and KOA operations across the line in Mississippi.
The closest public campground is Bladon Springs State Park, a 357-acre historic mineral springs park in Choctaw County operated in partnership with the county. Saint Stephens Historical Park, on the Tombigbee River south of Gilbertown, offers a much larger footprint with a 70-acre quarry lake and more than 40 RV sites. West of the state line, Clarkco State Park near Quitman and Maynor Creek Water Park near Waynesboro add reservoir camping, and Meridian East / Toomsuba KOA Journey provides a full-service private option just off I-20/59.
Most sites in this area are wooded, with pine cover common. Big-rig access varies, so verify site length before booking.
Things to do near Gilbertown
Water recreation is the anchor. Saint Stephens Historical Park has a quarry lake with a sandy swim beach, a boat launch onto the Tombigbee River and the lake, an 18-hole disc golf course, and more than 15 miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding. Clarkco State Park offers Clarkco Lake for fishing, swimming, and boating, along with hiking trails, tennis, and a disc golf course, plus a seasonal splash pad.
Maynor Creek Water Park centers on a 450-acre reservoir stocked with bream, catfish, crappie, and Florida bass, with swimming, water skiing, and boat rentals available. Saint Stephens also preserves the site of Alabama's territorial capital, with interpretive signs and a trail map available at the park office. Families staying at Meridian East / Toomsuba KOA Journey have access to seasonal pool, playground, and game room amenities.

How to book campgrounds near Gilbertown
Each park in this area uses a different reservation channel, so plan ahead. Bladon Springs State Park does not use the standard Alabama State Parks online reservation portal; the campground is operated in partnership with Choctaw County, and sites are booked by phone through the park manager or the county commission office. Confirm current status before travel, as operations at Bladon Springs have been intermittent.
Clarkco State Park takes reservations through the Mississippi State Parks reservation site at mississippistateparks.reserveamerica.com. Reservations must be made at least two days ahead of arrival and can be booked up to 24 months in advance, with a minimum booking age of 21. Meridian East / Toomsuba KOA Journey books through the KOA website or reservation line, and Saint Stephens Historical Park takes bookings directly through its park office.
