Camping near Grimes, Alabama
Grimes is a small town in Dale County in southeast Alabama's Wiregrass region, sitting between Ozark to the north and Dothan to the south. The area is flat to gently rolling, dominated by pine woods, peanut and cotton farms, and slow-moving creeks. RV travelers typically use Grimes as a quiet base between Fort Novosel (the Army aviation post formerly known as Fort Rucker) and the larger services in Dothan.
Private RV parks make up most of the local inventory. Rosemont RV Park and Todd Farms RV Park are the closest options, with A Okay RV Park, Alabama Wildwood RV, and Alabama Wildwood RV Park also within an easy drive. Most sites in this area lean toward long, level pull-throughs with full hookups, which suits families in larger rentals and travelers visiting family stationed at the base.
Bigger public campgrounds sit within an hour or two: Lakepoint State Park on Lake Eufaula, which features 192 improved campsites with full hookups available in the Deer Court loop, plus a lodge and cabins, and several U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds along the Chattahoochee River lakes.
Things to do around Grimes
The headline attraction is the U.S. Army Aviation Museum on Fort Novosel, which holds one of the largest collections of military helicopters in the world alongside fixed-wing aircraft and aviation artifacts. Admission is free, but the museum sits inside an active installation, so visitors without military IDs must obtain a visitor pass. All visitors 16 and older need a valid photo ID, and the screening process can take extra time, so plan to arrive early.
Families also head to Landmark Park in Dothan, a living history farm with a planetarium, the Wiregrass Museum of Art, and Water World in summer. Anglers can drive east to Walter F. George Lake, also known as Lake Eufaula, which has roughly 640 miles of shoreline and holds largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bream.
On base, Fort Novosel Riding Stables offer trail rides and lessons for guests with base access, set among thousands of acres of wooded training land.

Grimes sits in a humid subtropical climate without a dry season, with moist air off the Gulf of Mexico driving substantial humidity and rainfall. That climate shapes every season of camping here. Spring and fall are the sweet spots, with the most pleasant stretch running from April into June, when daytime highs range from the low 70s to the mid-80s Fahrenheit and rainfall is moderate.
Summer is hot and sticky. July and August bring average highs around 90°F, humidity that can top 75 percent, and August rainfall of roughly 4.4 inches spread across many days. Afternoon thunderstorms are the norm, and this is also peak Atlantic hurricane season, so travelers should watch tropical forecasts from June through November.
Winters are mild but wet. Winter lasts from December to February, with average highs from about 58 to 64°F and lows from about 41 to 46°F. December is the wettest month in the annual cycle. Hard freezes are rare, and most private RV parks stay open year-round.
How to book a campground near Grimes
Private parks handle their own reservations. Rosemont RV Park, Todd Farms RV Park, A Okay RV Park, Alabama Wildwood RV, and Alabama Wildwood RV Park take bookings by phone or through their own websites and third-party listing platforms. Monthly stays are common because of steady demand from students and instructors cycling through Fort Novosel, so weekly and monthly sites can be tight during class rotations. Book several weeks ahead for spring and fall visits.
Alabama state parks use a single online system. Alabama State Parks manages reservations centrally through reserve.alapark.com, with advance reservations accepted up to one year ahead for camping, lodging, and day-use across the state park system. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Walter F. George Lake, such as White Oak Creek and Hardridge Creek, book through Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month window that releases new dates daily.
What to expect on the ground
The Grimes area is rural and quiet. Roads are two-lane and easy for larger rigs once off Highway 231, but GPS routing can suggest narrow farm cut-throughs, so travelers should stick to state routes. Cell coverage is generally reliable, and grocery, fuel, propane, and RV service are all available in Dothan or Ozark, both within a short drive.
Most local RV parks are practical rather than resort-style: full hookups, gravel or grass pads, laundry, and a small office. Shade is a real consideration in summer, and mosquitoes are active from spring through fall, so bring repellent and screen tents. Pets are widely welcomed at private parks; check individual leash and breed rules at booking.
Expect a mix of long-term residents, military-connected guests, and highway travelers. Noise from occasional low-flying training helicopters out of Fort Novosel is a normal part of the soundscape in this corner of Alabama.
