Campgrounds and RV parks near Hackleburg, AL

Hackleburg sits in northwest Alabama, within driving range of the Bear Creek Lakes recreation system managed by the Bear Creek Development Authority (BCDA). In the late 1960s, the Tennessee Valley Authority began construction in Northwest Alabama on what is known as the Bear Creek Water Control Project, which is now overseen by the BCDA. The project is a system of four lakes and surrounding woodlands near Russellville, offering trophy fishing, boating, sand beaches, group pavilions, designated swimming areas, hunting, developed camping, picnicking, and hiking. Bear Creek Lakes include five campgrounds spread across the four reservoirs. The closest options for RV travelers based near Hackleburg include Williams Hollow - Bear Creek and Piney Point - Bear Creek, along with Elliott Branch - Bear Creek and Slick Rock - Bear Creek. Turkey Hill RV Park provides an additional private option in the area. Most sites in the BCDA system pair lake access with electric and water hookups, making the region a practical base for a family RV trip focused on swimming, fishing, and paddling.

The BCDA campgrounds operate differently from a typical reservation-based park. Camping is largely on a first-come, first-served basis at designated numbered sites, with a small number of sites and the Elliott Branch cabins reservable by phone through the BCDA office at 256-332-4392. Cabin reservations can only be made for the current calendar year, and booking for the next year does not open until after the New Year holiday. All users of the recreation areas need a BCDA permit, and visitors are not permitted after 10:00 p.m. Camp managers are typically away on Mondays, so travelers arriving that day may need to call ahead. Turkey Hill RV Park uses a standard private-park booking process handled directly by the operator. Arriving on a weekday outside major holidays improves the odds of securing a waterfront site at the Bear Creek campgrounds.
