Campgrounds and RV parks near Headland, AL

Water access is the region's main draw. Omussee Creek Park, run by Houston County, offers two boat ramps onto the Chattahoochee River, nature trails, a volleyball court, softball and baseball fields, and picnic areas. Lake Eufaula, roughly 45 minutes north, is nationally known for bass fishing and has multiple public boat launches. Dothan, ten miles south, provides restaurants, grocery runs, and the National Peanut Festival each fall. Landmark Park interprets Wiregrass farm life, and several golf courses sit within a 30 to 45 minute drive. For day trips, Florida's Gulf beaches at Panama City and Destin are reachable in 60 to 90 minutes, and the covered bridges and river bluffs along the Alabama-Georgia line make good short outings from any of the local RV parks.

Southeast Alabama has a humid subtropical climate with hot, sticky summers and mild winters. Peak RV traffic runs from October through April, when snowbirds from northern states settle into monthly sites along the US 431 corridor. Winter daytime highs typically sit in the upper 50s to low 60s Fahrenheit, with occasional cold snaps but no reliable snow. Spring brings warm days and frequent thunderstorms, and severe weather including tornadoes is possible from March through May. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs routinely in the low 90s and near-daily thunderstorms building in the afternoon. Biting insects, especially mosquitoes and no-see-ums, are heaviest from late spring through early fall. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk from August through October. Storms tracking inland from the Gulf can bring damaging wind and heavy rain this far north, as Hurricane Michael demonstrated when it destroyed the former Chattahoochee State Park.

Most parks near Headland are working RV parks rather than resorts. Expect gravel or grass pads, full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, laundry, and clean bathhouses. Sites tend to be open and sunny with limited tree cover, so awnings and shade planning matter in summer. Cell service on the major carriers is generally reliable along US 431 and near Dothan, but drops off along the Chattahoochee River at Omussee Creek, where a booster or external antenna helps. Grocery, fuel, and RV supply runs are easiest in Dothan. The surrounding area is rural and quiet. Parks near the river can flood after heavy rain, and low-lying sites hold water, so check conditions with the office if storms have moved through recently.
