Campgrounds near Marion, Alabama
Marion sits in Perry County in Alabama's Black Belt region, roughly 30 miles north of Selma and about an hour southwest of Tuscaloosa. The small college town is surrounded by pine forests, farmland, and a mix of state parks, historic sites, and privately run RV parks, giving renters several campground options within a short drive.
The closest developed camping is at Paul M Grist State Park, a compact camping and day-use area built around a 100-acre lake north of Selma. For hookup sites and easy access to services, My RV Park Selma offers a straightforward stopover near US-80. Travelers willing to drive a bit farther can reach Moundville Archaeological Park Univ of Alabama to the north near Tuscaloosa, Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Park to the east, and Chickasaw State Park to the west in Marengo County.
Most sites in the area accommodate travel trailers and mid-size motorhomes comfortably. Large Class A rigs should confirm site length and turning radius before booking, especially at the smaller state parks.
Things to do around Marion
Outdoor activity in this part of Alabama centers on lake fishing, paddling, and quiet forest recreation. Paul M Grist State Park has a swimming beach, a stocked 100-acre lake with bass, bluegill, and catfish, and boat rentals on a no-wake lake, making it a practical base for families. Chickasaw State Park adds birding along the Alabama Black Belt Birding Trail and open picnic areas.
History is a major draw. Moundville Archaeological Park Univ of Alabama preserves one of the largest Mississippian-era mound sites in the country and includes a museum on Native American culture. Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Park protects Civil War-era iron furnace ruins and hosts music events in warmer months.
Day trips to Selma add civil rights history, including the Edmund Pettus Bridge and related museums.

Central Alabama has a long camping season, but conditions vary sharply by month. Spring, from mid-March through May, is the most comfortable stretch, with warm days, cool nights, and dogwoods and azaleas in bloom across the state parks. Fall, roughly late September through early November, brings a second peak with lower humidity, fewer bugs, and mild afternoons that suit hiking and lake activities.
Summers are hot and humid, with highs regularly in the low 90s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Shaded sites, electric hookups for air conditioning, and lake access become priorities. Biting insects, including mosquitoes and ticks, are active through the warm months.
Winters are short and generally mild, with occasional freezes and rain-heavy weeks. Paul M Grist State Park operates year round, while the bathhouse at Moundville Archaeological Park Univ of Alabama closes annually from December 1 through March 1, limiting winter use to self-contained RVs at that site.
How to book a site
Booking around Marion is largely phone-based rather than online. Paul M Grist State Park takes campground reservations directly through the park office, and Chickasaw State Park takes them by calling the park manager under a partnership with Marengo County. Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Park is part of the Alabama State Parks system and handles bookings through the park office and the alapark.com website.
Moundville Archaeological Park Univ of Alabama does not accept reservations. Sites are first-come, first-served, and campers must register in person at the Admissions Building before check-in cutoff. Privately operated My RV Park Selma accepts bookings by phone or through its own website.
RV renters should confirm site length, hookup type such as 30 or 50 amp, and whether sewer is on-site or dump-station only before finalizing a booking.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the state parks are generally paved but narrow, with tight turns near campground loops. Cell coverage is spotty inside Paul M Grist and Chickasaw, and better along the highway corridors and in Selma. Grocery runs, propane, and RV supplies are easiest in Selma or Tuscaloosa rather than Marion itself.
State park sites tend to be wooded and unlevel in spots, so leveling blocks are worth packing. Expect basic bathhouses and dump stations rather than full-service resort amenities. Chickasaw State Park has restrooms but no showers, and Moundville closes its bathhouse in the winter months. My RV Park Selma leans more toward pull-through convenience for overnight travelers.
Wildlife encounters are common but low risk: deer, raccoons, and songbirds are frequent, and food should be stored securely overnight.
