RV camping near Mosses, Alabama
Mosses is a small town in Lowndes County, Alabama, and part of the Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area. It sits in central Alabama's Black Belt region, roughly a half-hour drive west of Montgomery along U.S. Highway 80. RV travelers use Mosses as a quiet, rural base for exploring the state capital, the Alabama River lakes, and the civil rights sites strung along the Selma to Montgomery corridor.
Most full-hookup RV parks in the area cluster around Montgomery rather than in Mosses itself. Closer-in private options include Montgomery South RV Park and Cabins, Autauga Creek Landing RV Campground, Kountry Air RV Park, The Backyard RV Resort, and Unhitched Montgomery RV Park. Public camping nearby is centered on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Alabama River Lakes, including Prairie Creek Campground on Woodruff Lake in the Black Prairie Belt.
Expect flat terrain, pine and hardwood cover, and warm, humid weather for most of the season. The area suits travelers who want to combine city day trips with lake fishing, wildlife viewing, and historical touring.
Things to do near Mosses
History is the headline draw. The Lowndes Interpretive Center sits about one-third of the way along the 54-mile Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, created by Congress in 1996 to preserve and interpret the events surrounding the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Exhibits include a replica of Tent City, which housed sharecroppers displaced by white landlords for registering to vote. The center is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.
On the water, Woodruff Lake offers fishing for bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish, with boating, jet skiing and other water sports accessed from the boat ramp. The nearby Lowndes Wildlife Management Area covers 12,500 acres and offers hunting for whitetail deer, wild turkey, hogs, and a variety of small game and waterfowl. Montgomery adds museums, the state capitol, and family restaurants a short drive east.

Central Alabama has a long camping season. Montgomery experiences a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot summers and cool winters, with rainfall spread fairly evenly through the year, though heavy downpours or afternoon thunderstorms can occur during the warmer months. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel.
Spring brings wildflowers and strong river fishing, but it is also the wettest stretch. March is the wettest month in Montgomery with about 137 mm of rain, while October is the driest at 73 mm. Book early for the March civil rights anniversary weekends around Selma, when lodging in the corridor tightens.
Summer brings heat, humidity, and thunderstorms; shaded, waterfront sites at the Corps of Engineers lakes are the most bearable option. The best time of year to visit Montgomery is generally March to mid-May and October to November. Winters are mild enough that many private RV parks stay open year-round, though cold snaps and rain are common.
How to book campgrounds near Mosses
Private RV parks near Mosses, including Montgomery South RV Park and Cabins, Autauga Creek Landing RV Campground, Kountry Air RV Park, The Backyard RV Resort, and Unhitched Montgomery RV Park, are booked directly through each park's own website or by phone. Call ahead to confirm big-rig length, hookup amperage, and pull-through availability.
Public sites on the Alabama River are federal. Prairie Creek Campground, on Woodruff Lake, is part of the Alabama River Lakes system and is reserved through Recreation.gov. Gunter Hill, also on the Corps of Engineers system, uses the same portal.
For Alabama State Parks, users with an Alabama zip code can book 13 months in advance, while out-of-state users can book 12 months in advance; the zip code attached to the credit card must match the Alabama zip code originally provided. Reservations are made through the Plan Your Adventure Online portal at alapark.com. Reserve holiday weekends and spring anniversary dates as far ahead as possible.
What to expect on the ground
The landscape around Mosses is rural and low-traffic. Cell coverage is workable but uneven off the main highways, and grocery runs generally mean driving into Montgomery or Selma. Fuel stops along U.S. 80 are limited, so top up before turning off for a lakeside campground.
Corps of Engineers sites are the value pick. Prairie Creek has 55 family RV sites and seven tent-only sites, all with electric hookups, plus flush toilets, showers, drinking water, a dump station, laundry facilities, a boat ramp, dock, playground, basketball court, and picnic shelter. Ancient oaks draped in Spanish moss shade many sites.
Bring insect repellent, especially near water, and expect biting insects from late spring through fall. Summer heat is real; parents traveling with kids should plan early-morning outdoor activities and midday breaks in air conditioning.
