Campgrounds and RV parks near Northport, AL

Downtown Northport and neighboring Tuscaloosa cover most casual trip planning: riverwalk paths along the Black Warrior, restaurants, and University of Alabama athletics and museums. Football weekends drive most peak-season RV demand. For history and outdoor time, Moundville Archaeological Park pairs the Jones Archaeological Museum with the mound complex and river access, along with guided tours and seasonal events like the Moundville Native American Festival. Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park adds hiking, biking, fishing, a miniature train ride, a working gristmill, pioneer cabins with craft demonstrations, and the Alabama Iron and Steel Museum. Families with kids often split time between the mounds, the Tannehill trails and craft cabins, and Tuscaloosa's downtown.

Northport has a humid subtropical climate with hot, long summers and mild, short winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days and cooler nights. Summer brings high heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms, so shaded sites and hookups for air conditioning matter. Late winter and early spring also bring the region's peak severe-weather risk. Fall is the busiest period locally. University of Alabama home football weekends fill Tuscaloosa-area campgrounds well in advance, and availability tightens from late August through November. Book early for any Saturday game weekend. Winter stays are quiet and workable for self-contained rigs, though some park facilities scale back. At Moundville, the bathhouse closes for the winter starting in early December and reopens in March, and only self-contained RVs are permitted during that window. Tannehill runs year-round and gets especially busy around its Trade Days and Halloween Festival events, when sites can fill up on a first-come basis.

Expect a mix of hookup levels depending on where you stay. Moundville has 34 campsites: 24 sites with electric and water hookups, 5 sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups, and 5 primitive sites without utility connections. Sites are gravel and generally level, with picnic tables and fire rings, and a train line runs near the property. Tannehill is larger and better suited to bigger rigs. The park offers 195 improved campsites divided into three areas with water and electricity, supported by two bathhouses and several dump stations, plus a separate area with 100 primitive tent sites, and the campground can handle trailers both large and small. Private parks near Northport lean toward standard full-hookup pull-throughs geared to travelers and game-day visitors. Cell coverage across the area is generally solid on major carriers, with occasional weak spots inside wooded state park sections.
