The Bear Creek Lakes chain of Little Bear, Upper Bear, Cedar Creek, and Big Bear anchors most trips. The lakes are known for bass, crappie, and channel catfish. Peak RV season runs from late April through early October, when the Bear Creek lakes are at full pool and swim areas, boat ramps, and shower houses at the recreation areas are open. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day book heavily, and holiday sites at the lake parks often fill months in advance. Spring brings mild days, wildflowers in the Bankhead forest, and higher rainfall, so renters should expect occasional thunderstorms and check creek levels before paddling. Late April into May is also the spring peak for dismalite viewing at Dismals Canyon, with a smaller fall peak in late September and early October. Fall is the most comfortable window: warm afternoons, cool nights, and hardwood color through October and into early November. Winters are short but damp. Some private parks stay open year-round with limited services, while several Bear Creek recreation areas reduce hours or close gates between late fall and early spring. Confirm operating dates directly with each campground before booking a winter trip.

Bear Creek recreation areas offer paved or gravel pads, water and electric hookups at most RV sites with 30 and 50 amp service, central dump stations, and bathhouses with hot showers. A BCDA permit is required for lake and creek use in addition to the campsite fee. Cell coverage can be patchy in the coves and along wooded loops, so download maps before leaving town. Private parks near Russellville tend to have full hookups, laundry, and easier big-rig access from paved county roads. Amenities like pools, playgrounds, and Wi-Fi vary by property. Expect biting insects from late spring through early fall, especially near the lakes and creeks. Firewood should be bought locally to avoid moving pests, and standard food-storage practices apply at any wooded site.
