Campgrounds near Troy, Alabama
Troy sits in southeast Alabama along US Highway 231, roughly halfway between Montgomery and Dothan, which makes it a practical RV base for travelers heading to or from the Florida Panhandle. The town is built around Troy University and the Pioneer Museum of Alabama, and the surrounding Pike County countryside is flat to gently rolling pine and hardwood, with creeks, small lakes, and farm land typical of the Wiregrass region.
RV options in the immediate area are mostly privately owned parks rather than state or federal campgrounds. Walnut Creek RV Park sits off US 231 south of Troy and is a full-service option with full hookup pull-through sites and a stocked pond on property. Deer Run RV Park and Bama Slam RV Park add additional private options in the broader Wiregrass area, while Alabama Mud Park draws off-road and event traffic to its grounds in rural Pike County. South of Troy, the Ozark / Fort Rucker KOA Journey on US 231 is a reliable highway-adjacent stop for travelers continuing toward Dothan or the Gulf.
Things to do around Troy
In town, the Pioneer Museum of Alabama covers Wiregrass-region farm and pioneer history with restored buildings and period exhibits, and the Johnson Center for the Arts and Troy University campus give families an easy half-day in Troy itself. The Conecuh Ridge Distillery offers tours for adult travelers, and the Troy University Arboretum has shaded walking loops. Pond fishing at Walnut Creek RV Park is popular with families, and Camp Butter and Egg Adventures just outside town has 23 ziplines and aerial courses aimed at older kids and adults. South of Troy near the Ozark / Fort Rucker KOA Journey, the US Army Aviation Museum on the post now known as Fort Novosel is a strong rainy-day stop with free admission and a large helicopter collection.

Troy has a humid subtropical climate, so the shoulder seasons are by far the most comfortable for RV travel. Spring runs warm and wet, with afternoon thunderstorms common from late March through May, and severe weather including tornadoes is possible during this stretch. April and early May are popular for camping before humidity and biting insects peak. Fall is the standout season: temperatures cool through September and October, and late October into mid-November typically brings clear, dry days and cool nights, which lines up with home football weekends at Troy University and busier local parks.
Summer is hot and humid, with highs near 90 most afternoons and frequent thunderstorms. Sites along US 231 such as the Ozark / Fort Rucker KOA Journey and Walnut Creek RV Park stay open and busy with Florida-bound travelers, but shaded sites and 50-amp service for air conditioning are worth prioritizing. Winters are mild and wet, with overnight lows usually above freezing; most area RV parks stay open year-round, and snow is rare.
Booking and reservations
Most parks near Troy are privately operated, so reservations are handled through each park rather than a state or federal system. Walnut Creek RV Park takes bookings through its own site and is also listed on third-party platforms such as Campspot and RoverPass. Deer Run RV Park and Bama Slam RV Park accept bookings directly by phone or through their websites. The Ozark / Fort Rucker KOA Journey books through the KOA reservation system, which lets travelers hold sites online and combine multiple KOA stops in one checkout. Alabama Mud Park sells camping with event tickets when mud bog or ride weekends are scheduled, and those weekends fill well in advance. For weekday and off-season stops, same-week reservations are usually fine; for Troy University football weekends, holiday weekends, and snowbird traffic in late winter, book several weeks ahead.
What to expect on the ground
Expect flat, pine-shaded terrain and easy highway access rather than backcountry camping. Most parks in the Troy area are big-rig friendly with full hookups, 30 and 50 amp service, and pull-through sites. Walnut Creek RV Park has level pads, a fishing pond, and on-site laundry and showers, and the Ozark / Fort Rucker KOA Journey offers long pull-throughs aimed at overnight US 231 traffic. Cell coverage on the major carriers is generally solid along the US 231 corridor, and most parks provide Wi-Fi of varying quality. Groceries, fuel, propane, and big-box stores are all available in Troy itself. Mosquitos and biting flies are part of life from late spring through early fall, so screens and repellent are worth packing. Severe weather is possible in spring, and the Ozark / Fort Rucker KOA Journey maintains an on-site storm shelter.

Book your RVezy rental first, then your campsite, so you know your rig's length and hookup needs.

You have a few easy options for a quick overnight stop. Many Walmart and Cracker Barrel locations along US 231 (including the Troy Walmart Supercenter) traditionally allow overnight RV parking with manager permission, just call ahead and park away from the entrance. Truck stops along major highways often have dedicated RV spaces, fuel, and dump stations. For longer stays, stick with full-service parks like Deer Run or Walnut Creek. On where to park an RV in Troy, the city does not permit overnight street parking in residential areas, so always confirm with property management or head to a paid park for the night.
