Campgrounds and RV parks near Union Springs, AL

Union Springs bills itself as the Bird Dog Field Trial Capital of the World, and the Bird Dog Field Trial Monument, a life-size bronze English pointer on a granite pillar at the intersection of Hardaway Avenue and Prairie Street, anchors the downtown. More than 47 buildings and sites in and around town are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including antebellum homes and the Red Door Theatre. Five downtown murals by artist Wes Hardin trace local history, including tributes to Hank Williams and Eddie Kendricks. Outside town, the Wehle Land Conservation Center covers roughly 1,500 acres of rolling pine hills and hardwood bottoms open for hiking, birding, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Anglers fish the Conecuh River, and hunters focus on whitetail deer, wild turkey, and quail. For family day trips, the Montgomery Zoo is about 45 minutes away and Auburn University is roughly an hour north.

Union Springs has a humid subtropical climate: hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. Summer highs run near the low 90s Fahrenheit with heat-index values that can climb well past 100, so RV sites with shade and full hookups for air conditioning are worth prioritizing from June through August. Afternoon thunderstorms are common. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for camping. March through May brings warming days and blooming pine and hardwood forests, while September through November cools steadily from the 80s into the 60s. Fall also overlaps the start of the bird dog field-trial season, which runs from October through March and can fill nearby lodging around championship weekends. Winter is mild by North American standards, with January highs in the mid-50s and lows near the upper 30s. Snow is very rare. February brings the National Amateur Free-for-All Championship field trials, a tradition in Bullock County dating to the early 1920s.

Expect a quiet, rural setting. Union Springs is a small town of roughly 3,400 people, and campgrounds in the immediate area lean toward simple, no-frills RV parks that serve hunters, workers, and travelers along U.S. 82 and U.S. 29. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town and thinner on backroads and hunting-preserve access lanes. Sites at private parks near town usually offer full hookups; expect gravel or grass pads, moderate shade from pines and hardwoods, and limited on-site recreation. Alabama Mud Park is a different experience: high-energy event weekends, off-road trails, and campers who bring ATVs and side-by-sides. Summer campers should plan for humidity, biting insects, and afternoon storms. Winter travelers can expect mild days, cool nights, and open availability outside field-trial championship weeks.
