Campgrounds and RV parks near Uniontown, AL

Fishing and boating anchor most trips. Dannelly Reservoir, also known as Millers Ferry, is known for excellent fishing in southwest Alabama, and Roland Cooper State Park provides boat launching facilities and hosts fishing tournaments through the year. Paul M Grist State Park centers on a stocked 100-acre lake with a swimming beach and paddle-boat rentals, plus shoreline fishing and hiking trails. Birding is a regional draw. Access to the Alabama River and abundant forested surroundings make Roland Cooper a featured stop on Alabama's Black Belt Birding Trail, with raptors, waterfowl, and songbirds common and bald eagles and osprey present most of the year. Chickasaw State Park and Paul M Grist are also stops on the same trail. For history, Moundville Archaeological Park preserves 26 large prehistoric platform mounds built by Mississippian peoples, and Selma's civil-rights sites, including the Edmund Pettus Bridge, are a short drive away.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in this part of Alabama. Days are mild, humidity is lower than in summer, and campgrounds on area lakes are lightly booked outside holiday weekends. Spring brings active crappie and bass fishing on Dannelly Reservoir, and lakeside sites at Paul M Grist see steady but manageable use. Summers are hot, humid, and stormy, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Shaded lakeside sites help, and the swimming beach at Paul M Grist sees the most use in this stretch. Biting insects are active, so screens and repellent matter. Winters are mild but wet, and some services scale back. At Moundville, the campground bathhouse is closed annually from December 1 through March 1, and only RVs with onboard bathrooms and showers are permitted during that window; no tent camping is allowed. Deer and duck hunting seasons run through winter, and hunters use Chickasaw State Park as a nearby overnight base since it sits next to the Turnipseed-Ikenberry Place hunting area.

Expect small, quiet campgrounds rather than resort-style parks. Roland Cooper is the most developed option, with paved sites, water, 30-amp electrical and sewer hookups, a dump station, bathhouse, laundry, and a boat launch. Sites are level and paved, and some overlook the water. Smaller state parks have limited amenities. At Chickasaw, restrooms are on-site but there are no shower facilities. Paul M Grist offers 11 lakeside sites with full hookups along Valley Creek Lake, plus flush toilets and hot showers. Moundville has 34 sites, with 5 full-hookup, 24 electric and water, and 5 primitive, plus a renovated bathhouse and a fenced pet area at the campground entrance. The park closes at 6 pm and gates are locked nightly, pets are allowed on leash, and quiet time runs from 10 pm to 7 am. Cell service is generally reliable but not universal.
