Campgrounds near Vance, Alabama
Vance sits in Tuscaloosa County along Interstate 20/59, roughly halfway between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. The town lies about 34 miles west of Birmingham and about 19 miles east of downtown Tuscaloosa. That location makes it a practical RV base for travelers heading to either metro area, for University of Alabama game weekends, or for the Mercedes-Benz visitor center at the MBUSI plant just off the interstate at Exit 89.
Camping options within a short drive lean heavily on Alabama's historic ironworks state parks. Tannehill State Park offers 195 improved campsites divided into three areas with water and electricity supported by two bathhouses and several dump stations. The campground can handle trailers both large and small. There is also a separate area for 100 primitive tent camping sites. Brierfield Ironworks sits farther southeast in Bibb County and features improved campsites with clean restrooms, hot showers, and electrical hook-ups, plus a swimming pool for hot summer days.
Private RV parks fill in the gaps closer to town. Bama RV Station and Coaches Corner RV Park serve travelers who want simple hookup stays near Vance and Tuscaloosa, and Hoover RV Park works well for RVers pointed toward the Birmingham suburbs.
Things to do near Vance
History is the main draw. At Tannehill Ironworks, adventure seekers and history buffs can explore the ancient furnace stacks and the Iron and Steel Museum, where exhibits provide context to the park's role in Alabama's iron-making industry during the Civil War era. Hiking trails wind through scenic woodlands and along the banks of Roupes Creek. A pioneer farm and seasonal train rides appeal to kids, and the park hosts events including Trade Days and a Halloween Festival.
Brierfield Ironworks adds a second Civil War-era furnace site, with flea markets, free movie nights, traditional black powder shooting, hands-on workshops, viewing the furnace ruins, and walking the natural trails. A seasonal swimming pool operates in the warm months.
Beyond the parks, RVers can tour the Mercedes-Benz visitor center in Vance, catch a Crimson Tide game in Tuscaloosa, or drive to Oak Mountain State Park near Birmingham for lake swimming and mountain biking.

Central Alabama runs on a humid subtropical schedule. The area is known for hot and long summers, as well as mild and short winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping, with daytime highs generally in the 70s Fahrenheit and lower humidity than midsummer.
Summer brings heat, high humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. Shade, hookups with reliable electric for air conditioning, and creekside sites become priorities. At Tannehill, sites are first come first serve and are often completely filled during Halloween, as trick-or-treating has now become a local tradition at the park, with creative decorations placed by campers. Football Saturdays in Tuscaloosa from late August through November also tighten availability at private parks within an hour of the stadium.
Winters are mild but wet, with occasional freezes and rare light snow. Both state parks remain open year-round, though the pool and some seasonal activities pause. Brierfield is open 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset including holidays except for campground activities and receptions, with parking lots, restrooms, and hiking trails open every day.
How to book campgrounds near Vance
Reservation rules vary by property, so plan accordingly. Tannehill uses a first-come, first-served policy, allowing campers to secure a site upon arrival without reservations. Registration is available around the clock, and check-out is early afternoon. Arrive earlier in the day on Fridays, holiday weekends, and event weekends such as Trade Days and the Halloween Festival, when sites can fill quickly.
Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Park takes reservations for its campsites and cabins directly through the park. A service fee is assessed on facility reservation cancellations at either Brierfield Park or Tannehill Park, cancellations must be made at least 15 days prior to the reservation date to receive a deposit refund less the minimum service fee, and cancellations within 14 days or less are subject to a charge of 50% of the one-day rental fee.
Private parks such as Bama RV Station, Coaches Corner RV Park, and Hoover RV Park typically accept phone or online reservations; book well ahead for Alabama home football weekends.
What to expect on the ground
The state park campgrounds around Vance are wooded and creek-fed rather than manicured resorts. Brierfield offers a quiet campground with clean, well-maintained facilities, a camp store stocked with basic items and snacks, and an inground swimming pool, plus big shady trees and a creek running through the property. Sites feel relaxed and informal; some are dirt and gravel rather than paved pads.
Tannehill is larger and busier, with three campground loops, a camp store, and long stretches of shady sites along Roupes Creek. Expect kids on bikes, families exploring furnace ruins, and event weekends that can bring a festival atmosphere.
Private parks near Vance and Hoover run more like standard RV parks: level pads, full hookups, and easier big-rig access, but less of the historic setting. Cell coverage varies by carrier, and reception can dip inside the wooded state parks.

Winters are mild, typically 40 to 60 degrees during the day, so RV camping in Vance runs year-round. Pro tip: fall weekends overlap with Alabama Crimson Tide football, book your motorhome rental in Vance early if you're heading to a game.

If city driving worries you, skip downtown Birmingham and Tuscaloosa game-day traffic by sticking to highways and rural routes. Save both numbers in your phone before you leave Vance and keep your booking confirmation handy. Pro tip: do a quick pre-trip walk-around with your host, check tire pressure, fluids, and lights, it knocks out most issues before they happen.
