Campgrounds near York, Alabama
York sits in Sumter County in Alabama's Black Belt region, just east of the Mississippi state line along Interstate 20/59. The town has no full-service RV park within its limits, so most RV travelers base themselves at campgrounds a short drive west into Mississippi or south into Marengo County. The closest hookup options are clustered around Toomsuba and Meridian, roughly 20 to 40 miles from York.
The area's best-known RV stop is Meridian East / Toomsuba KOA Journey, a pine-shaded park just off I-20 Exit 165 with pull-through RV sites, cabins, a swimming pool, camp store, game room, playground, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Benchmark RV Park and the Hill Country Community motorhome park add smaller, quieter options closer to Meridian.
For lake camping, Okatibbee Water Park sits on Pine Springs Road northwest of Meridian and is operated by the Pat Harrison Waterway District, with full-hookup RV sites, cabins, water slides, and boat launches on Okatibbee Lake. To the south in Marengo County, Chickasaw State Park has three modern RV sites with water and 30-amp service, primitive sites with water and electricity, restrooms, and no showers.
Things to do near York
Water recreation drives most trips to the region. Okatibbee Lake covers roughly 4,000 acres of water surface in the Pascagoula River Basin, with largemouth bass, crappie, and year-round fishing along with water skiing and swimming. The Corps of Engineers manages Twiltley Branch as the lake's full-service campground and maintains four boat ramps and three designated swimming areas around the reservoir, and seasonal water slides at Okatibbee Water Park add family appeal in summer.
Inland, Chickasaw State Park offers picnicking, a playground, hiking trails, and a wading pool on a 520-acre tract along U.S. 43 in Marengo County. The park sits on the Alabama Black Belt Birding Trail, with strong migration-season sightings of warblers, buntings, vireos, and flickers. Historic downtown Meridian, about 25 minutes from York, adds museums, restaurants, and the MSU Riley Center performing arts hall for a rainy-day option.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of the Alabama-Mississippi line. Mild days, cooler nights, and lower humidity make March through May and September through November the most comfortable stretches for camping. Chickasaw State Park is open year-round, though showers are not available on site, so tank capacity matters more in shoulder seasons when nearby facilities may run reduced hours.
Summer is peak season at the lake parks. Okatibbee's water slides typically run from late spring through Labor Day, and weekend sites around the reservoir fill quickly through June and July. Heat and humidity build fast, and afternoon thunderstorms are routine. Fall brings cooler nights, and public hunting on the wildlife management lands adjacent to Okatibbee Lake picks up through winter.
Winter is the quietest stretch. Freezes are brief and passable for hardy campers, though rain is frequent and some day-use facilities operate on reduced schedules. Big-rig travelers passing on I-20/59 will still find year-round hookups at the Toomsuba KOA.
How to book campgrounds near York
Reservation systems vary by operator, so plan by park. Meridian East / Toomsuba KOA Journey takes reservations online at koa.com or by phone, and the Kampgrounds of America site lets guests pick specific pull-throughs, shaded corners, or cabins at booking.
Okatibbee Water Park is run by the Pat Harrison Waterway District, a Mississippi state agency that operates nine water parks with cabins, RV sites, water slides, boat launches, and nature trails adjacent to reservoirs and rivers in the Pascagoula River Basin. Reservations go through the PHWD website or by calling the park office directly.
Chickasaw State Park uses a direct-call system. For campground reservations call the park manager at 334-643-3448. Sites are limited to three modern RV pads plus primitive spots, so book several weeks ahead for spring and fall weekends. Benchmark RV Park and Hill Country Community book directly with the operator.
What to expect on site
Expect a mix of pine-shaded pull-throughs and older lakeside pads. The Toomsuba KOA offers full-service sites, a 36-by-50-foot pool, showers, laundry, propane, a game room, playground, camp store, and Wi-Fi, which makes it the most turnkey option for families and first-time RV renters.
Corps-adjacent and state-agency parks are more rustic. At Okatibbee, campers report full hookups and quiet, well-spaced sites, though the pads are narrow and some are uneven, and while some sites have a water view there is not direct lake access from the campground. Big rigs fit, but a walk-around before backing in is worth the time.
Chickasaw is a small, hunter-oriented stop. The park has three RV campsites with water and 30-amp electrical connections, primitive water and electric sites, restrooms, and no shower facilities, so plan onboard water and tank capacity accordingly.
