Campgrounds and RV parks near Willow, AK

Willow sits along the Parks Highway in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, roughly 70 highway miles north of Anchorage. The area is defined by hundreds of small lakes, black spruce forest, and views of the Talkeetna Mountains, and it functions as a launch point for fishing, paddling, and Hatcher Pass trips. Most RV camping in the area is on Alaska State Parks land. Popular Mat-Su area Alaska State Parks such as Nancy Lake and Denali State Park are all on the reservation system. Nancy Lake State Recreation Area covers a large tract of lake-studded lowland west of the highway, and the adjacent Nancy Lake State Recreation Site is a smaller unit on the lake itself. Big Lake North State Recreation Site anchors camping on the busier Big Lake to the south, and Government Peak Campground sits in the Hatcher Pass Management Area east of town. Private options fill in the gaps. Riverside RV and Camper Park and Burkshore Marina offer serviced pull-in sites closer to the highway and to boat access, useful for renters who want hookups after long driving days.

State-park sites in the Willow area split between reservable and first-come inventory. Reservations can be made exactly 12:00AM AKST, 7 months in advance through the Alaska State Parks reservation system for units such as Nancy Lake State Recreation Site. Book weekend nights in July and early August well ahead, since Anchorage traffic fills the lake-adjacent loops first. Other state units in the recreation area still run on walk-up, with a 15-day stay limit. Plan to arrive by early Friday afternoon on summer weekends. Private options such as Riverside RV and Camper Park and Burkshore Marina take direct reservations by phone or website and are the more reliable choice for tight itineraries or larger rigs needing full hookups.
