Campgrounds near Ajo, Arizona
Ajo sits in the western Sonoran Desert of Pima County, roughly halfway between Phoenix and the Mexican border. It functions as the last full-service town before Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, and most RV traffic through town is headed to or from the monument or the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge to the west.
RV options cluster in two categories. In town, private parks such as Ajo Heights RV Park, Belly Acres RV Park, Palms Mobile Home RV Park, and Sonoran Desert RV Park offer full or partial hookups, laundry, and easy access to groceries, fuel, and restaurants along SR 85. About 33 miles south, Twin Peaks Campground is the developed federal campground inside Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, near the Kris Eggle Visitor Center.
Ajo itself is small, walkable, and historic, with a restored Spanish Colonial Revival plaza and murals. Gas, restaurants, shops, and groceries are available in town, making Ajo the natural resupply stop for anyone camping deeper in the desert or heading toward Lukeville and the border.
Things to do near Ajo
Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is the primary draw. The 21-mile Ajo Mountain Drive loops past dense stands of organ pipe and saguaro cactus, and trails radiate from Twin Peaks Campground and the visitor center. A 0.9-mile perimeter trail circles the campground, and the 1.2-mile Desert View Trail starts near the group camping area. The monument protects one of the best examples of Sonoran Desert wilderness, home to thirty-one species of cacti.
Closer to town, visitors walk the historic plaza, take in the New Cornelia open-pit copper mine overlook, and drive out to Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge for backcountry desert. Dark skies, spring wildflower blooms in wet years, birding, photography, and ranger programs during the winter kiosk season round out a typical stay.

Peak RV season runs from late fall through early spring. Twin Peaks fills quickly during the November 15 to April 15 peak window, when a 21-day consecutive stay limit applies. Snowbirds start filling the private parks in town from November onward, and daytime temperatures during this window sit in a comfortable range for hiking and sightseeing.
Spring, especially March and April, brings wildflowers and cactus bloom along with the tightest availability. Heat can arrive as early as mid-March, so travelers should watch the forecast and plan hikes for the early morning.
Summer is severe. Daytime highs commonly exceed 100°F from June through August, and the North American monsoon can push heavy afternoon thunderstorms and flash flooding onto desert roads from July into September. Private parks in Ajo remain open year-round, but occupancy drops sharply in summer. Fall cools quickly through October and November, and reservations for the coming winter season should be locked in well ahead.
How to book
Twin Peaks Campground is federal and reservation-based year-round through Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777. Reservations open up to 6 months in advance. Same-day reservations may be available when sites are open, but anyone arriving without a reservation still needs to log into Recreation.gov or call to secure a site. Cellular and wifi service is limited inside the monument, so booking before arriving is strongly encouraged. Check-in is 1:00 p.m. and check-out is 11:00 a.m., and the monument does not accept cash for entrance fees.
Private RV parks in Ajo, including Ajo Heights RV Park, Belly Acres RV Park, Palms Mobile Home RV Park, and Sonoran Desert RV Park, are booked directly with the operator by phone or website. Winter monthly sites often fill months out.
What to expect
In-town parks provide standard hookups, laundry, and paved or graded sites suited to snowbird stays. Twin Peaks is a different experience. It is a developed 208-space campground near the visitor center with RV sites up to 40 feet and a designated tent-only section: 34 tent-only sites and 174 RV sites, six restrooms, three with solar showers, and a dump station with potable water. No hookups are available, and shared water spigots are located throughout the loops.
Sites are level, mostly pull-through, and generally well spaced with native vegetation between them. Occupancy is limited to two tents, or one RV or trailer and one tent per site, with a maximum of six people and two vehicles. Expect quiet nights, dark skies, and a border-region setting with routine Border Patrol activity along SR 85.
