Campgrounds near Arivaca
Arivaca is an unincorporated community in southern Pima County, Arizona, roughly 11 miles north of the Mexican border and about 60 miles southwest of Tucson. The town sits at the eastern edge of Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge, a 117,464-acre expanse of semi-desert grasslands stretching from the Baboquivari Mountains to the Altar Valley. RV travelers use Arivaca as a base for wildlife viewing, birding, and quiet desert camping.
Full-hookup options cluster along the Interstate 19 corridor near Amado and Green Valley, roughly 20 to 30 miles east of town. De Anza Trails RV Resort in Amado, Green Valley RV Resort Park, Mesquite Ranch Campground, and Caballo Loco Ranch LLC serve travelers wanting hookups, laundry, and paved sites. Universal Ranch RV Park sits closer to Arivaca itself and offers a base for visitors exploring the refuge.
Expect a remote, rural setting with limited services in town, long dirt-road approaches to refuge campsites, and regular Border Patrol activity along area roads.
Things to do near Arivaca
Wildlife watching is the main draw. The Arivaca Cienega boardwalk and Arivaca Creek trailhead sit just outside town and pass through wetlands, cottonwoods, and mesquite that host a wide diversity of bird species in the surrounding refuge. The Buenos Aires visitor center covers the refuge's ranching history and current conservation work, including habitat management for the masked bobwhite quail.
Hiking options range from short interpretive loops at Arivaca Cienega to longer routes through the refuge grasslands with views of 7,730-foot Baboquivari Peak. Gravel cyclists and mountain bikers use the numbered dirt roads that lace the refuge. Drivers can loop through open country toward Brown Canyon and the refuge's southern grasslands when conditions allow.
In town, La Gitana Cantina and the Arivaca Mercantile cover meals and basic supplies.

March - May
79° / 55°F 8 mmDry and warming; fire restrictions often begin by May.
- summer
June - August
93° / 70°F 28 mmHot; monsoon storms bring flash flooding in washes.
- fall
September - November
77° / 54°F 15 mmCooling; strong shoulder window for hiking and birding.
- winter
December - February
63° / 45°F 20 mmMild days, cool nights; snowbird peak at I-19 resorts.
Peak season runs from mid-October through April. Daytime highs stay mild, nights are cool, and snowbirds fill full-hookup parks along the I-19 corridor. Bookings at resorts like De Anza Trails RV Resort and Green Valley RV Resort Park tighten in January and February, and monthly stays are common through this stretch.
Late spring, roughly April into June, is hot and very dry. Fire restrictions frequently take effect across Coronado National Forest and adjacent state and BLM lands during this window, and campfires on the refuge may be prohibited when fire danger is high. Restrictions typically ease once monsoon moisture raises fuel humidity, often in July.
Summer brings the North American monsoon, with afternoon thunderstorms from late June or early July through mid-September. Storms can cause flash flooding in washes and wash out dirt roads leading into the refuge. Fall cools quickly through October and November and is a strong shoulder window for hiking, with fewer visitors than the winter peak.
How to book campgrounds near Arivaca
Private RV parks in Amado and Green Valley are booked directly with the property by phone or website. De Anza Trails RV Resort operates year-round and takes reservations through its office, and winter dates should be locked in several months ahead. Universal Ranch RV Park, Mesquite Ranch Campground, Caballo Loco Ranch LLC, and Green Valley RV Resort Park likewise handle bookings directly through their operators.
Camping inside Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge is free and does not require a reservation or permit. All 83 campsites are primitive and camping is permitted only at numbered sites, with stays limited to 14 days within a 30-day period. Sites are first-come, first-served, so arrive with a backup plan during busy winter weekends.
Check the Coronado National Forest and Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management alert pages before departure for active fire restrictions.
What to expect
Refuge camping is dry camping. There is no water, no trash service, and no dump station, so plan for full tanks, packed-out garbage, and solar or battery power. Human waste must be buried immediately or removed, and plastic bags of waste should not be buried. Cell coverage inside the refuge is spotty and varies site by site.
Main refuge roads are graded dirt and passable to most rigs, but side roads can be rutted and washed out, especially after monsoon rains. Scout tight or remote sites before committing a large RV. Big rigs are generally fine at the I-19 resorts, which offer paved pull-throughs and 30/50-amp service.
Border Patrol vehicles pass through the area routinely, and travelers should carry ID and plenty of drinking water.

On RVezy, travel trailers near Arivaca typically run about $90 to $160 per night, campervans around $125 to $200, and Class C motorhomes between $175 and $295 depending on size and season. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Arivaca,ArizonaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Arivaca, Arizona?
Good news for first-timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Arivaca. Arizona does not require a special RV endorsement or commercial driver's license (CDL) for any motorhome or trailer you'll find on RVezy, whether it's a nimble Class B campervan or a 32-foot Class C. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during booking. Visiting from another country? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license and you're set to explore Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge just down the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Arivaca protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Arivaca booked through RVezy comes with a protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right into the reservation. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, so you can focus on stargazing in the Atascosa Highlands instead of worrying about a rock chip on a back road. During checkout you'll choose from different protection tiers (guests pick the level, not the host), so you can match coverage to your comfort. It gives you real financial peace of mind for your Arivaca RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Arivaca RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy has its own cancellation policy that applies to every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after you book. Cancellation outcomes depend on how far out you cancel and circumstances like severe weather or natural events, which matter in monsoon-prone southern Arizona (July to September). Because RVezy, not the host, manages the cancellation policy, you don't have to compare different rules across listings. If plans shift, just open your trip in the RVezy app and our support team will walk you through your options so you can rebook that Arivaca adventure with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Arivaca?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Arivaca options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts who welcome dogs, often with a small pet fee. Arivaca is a dream for dog owners: leashed pups are welcome on most trails at Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge just west of town, and Arivaca Lake offers shady picnic spots for a water break. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm the pet fee and any size limits, then pack a collapsible water bowl, because Sonoran Desert afternoons can hit 95°F even in May.
fws.gov/refuge/buenos-aires/visit-us/rules-and-policiesCan the RV be delivered to my campground or property in Arivaca?
Yes, RV delivery Arivaca is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially because the town is remote and many visitors fly into Tucson. Filter for Delivery on the search page and you'll see hosts who will tow or drive the RV directly to your campsite, a friend's property, or even a trailhead off Ruby Road. They'll level it, hook up water and power if available, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location, so booking a host near Tucson or Green Valley keeps costs down for your Arivaca stay.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Arivaca,ArizonaHow many miles can I drive on an Arivaca RV rental?
You'll have plenty of range to explore. Most Arivaca-area hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal if you want to chain together stops like Saguaro National Park (about 75 miles northeast), Tombstone (95 miles east), or Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument (115 miles west). Extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each, clearly shown on the listing before you book. Pro tip: if you're planning a big southern Arizona loop, filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message hosts to negotiate a mileage package, then map your route through Patagonia and Sonoita wine country for a scenic detour.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Arivaca,ArizonaWhere are the best campgrounds near Arivaca for RV camping?
You've got some genuinely special options for RV camping Arivaca. Arivaca Lake (Coronado National Forest) offers free dispersed-style camping right on a quiet 90-acre lake great for bass fishing. Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge allows free primitive camping at designated sites west of town, perfect for self-contained rigs. About 40 minutes north, De Anza RV Resort in Amado has full hookups, pool, and easy I-19 access. For a Green Valley base camp, Green Valley RV Resort (about 35 miles away) has paved sites and pickleball. Pro tip: cell service drops fast once you leave AZ-286, so download your maps offline before leaving town.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/coronado/recreation/camping-cabins/recarea/?recid=25554&actid=29When is the best time of year for an Arivaca RV trip?
October through April is the sweet spot for an Arivaca RV trip, with daytime highs from 62°F to 81°F and crisp, starry nights perfect for campfires at 3,600 feet elevation. Spring wildflowers peak in March, and winter is genuinely mild, often 60s by day, making Arivaca a top snowbird-adjacent destination. June is the hottest month with highs near 95°F, and July through September brings the dramatic North American Monsoon, which is stunning but means watching for flash floods on dirt roads. Pro tip: book an October trip and you'll catch the Arivaca Open Studio Tour, when local artists open their adobe studios to visitors.
weather.gov/twc/monsoonI've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Arivaca a good idea for first-timers?
Yes, and you're in good company, most people renting an RV in Arivaca are first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, leveling, water systems, and dump procedure. You can also message the host any question from the listing page before you book. For nervous first-timers, two great moves: pick a smaller travel trailer or Class B campervan rental Arivaca (easier on the winding Arivaca Road from I-19), and request delivery so the host sets everything up at your site. Then it's just relax, breakfast on the patio, javelina-spotting at sunrise.
azdot.gov/adot-blog/safety-corner-tips-driving-rvWhat if I get a flat tire or break down on my Arivaca RV trip?
You're covered: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so help is one phone call away even on a quiet stretch of Arivaca Road or out near Ruby Ghost Town. The service handles common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing to a qualified shop. Cell coverage can be patchy south of town, so save the RVezy support number in your phone before leaving Tucson and let your host know your rough itinerary. Pro tip: top off your tires in Green Valley before the final 25-mile climb into Arivaca, since there's no full-service tire shop in town itself.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat road trip destinations can I reach from Arivaca?
You're perfectly positioned for an unforgettable RV road trip from Arivaca. Saguaro National Park (West) sits about 75 miles north, packed with giant cacti for sunset photos. Tombstone, the legendary Old West town, is roughly 95 miles east via Sonoita. Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument lies 115 miles west along the border. Chiricahua National Monument (hoodoo rock spires) is a scenic 175-mile drive east. For wine country, Sonoita and Elgin vineyards are just 70 miles away. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, so plan loops that stay stateside. Pro tip: fuel up in Three Points or Green Valley, gas stations get very sparse south and west of Arivaca.
nps.gov/orpi/planyourvisit/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on an Arivaca RV rental?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to predict for your motorhome rental Arivaca. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves, you'll just pay for your tow vehicle, while Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A coaches 6 to 10 mpg. Arizona gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and you'll find the cheapest fill-ups in Green Valley or Tucson before heading south, since Arivaca has very limited fueling. Pro tip: a typical 4-night loop from Tucson to Arivaca to Saguaro and back covers about 250 miles, so budget around $80 to $150 in fuel for a mid-size Class C.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Arivaca?
You've got more flexibility here than at most Arizona destinations. Many sites near Arivaca, like the dispersed camping at Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge and Arivaca Lake in Coronado National Forest, are first-come-first-served and free, so a weekday arrival often lands you a great spot. For reservable parks like De Anza RV Resort in Amado or Green Valley RV Resort, book 2 to 4 weeks ahead in peak season (January to March, snowbird months) through Recreation.gov for federal sites or directly with the park. Pro tip: pair an Arivaca RV trip with a Saguaro National Park day visit and reserve the park's timed-entry slots on Recreation.gov as soon as they open.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are driving conditions like in and around Arivaca?
Driving to Arivaca is scenic and very doable in any RV, with one heads-up: it's remote. From I-19 at Amado, Arivaca Road is a paved 23-mile two-lane with gentle curves and a few cattle-crossing zones, easy in a Class C or travel trailer. South and west of town, many routes (like Ruby Road to Pena Blanca Lake) turn to dirt and can rut after monsoon rains, so confirm with your host whether the RV is approved for those roads. Watch for Border Patrol checkpoints on AZ-286 and have your ID handy. Pro tip: drive in daylight, open-range cattle and javelina cross Arivaca Road frequently at dusk.
azdot.gov/travel-informationWhat amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Arivaca?
Set your expectations for a true Sonoran Desert experience, many of the best campgrounds near Arivaca are primitive and gloriously quiet. Buenos Aires NWR and Arivaca Lake sites have no hookups, no water, and pit toilets, so come with full fresh tanks and empty grays. For full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), head 40 minutes north to De Anza RV Resort in Amado or Green Valley RV Resort, both with dump stations, laundry, and Wi-Fi. You can also dump and refill water at De Anza on your way back to Tucson. Pro tip: top off propane in Green Valley, since chilly Arivaca nights can dip into the 40s November through March.
fws.gov/refuge/buenos-aires/visit-us/activities/campingWhat features and amenities come with RVs rented in Arivaca?
You'll be surprised how well-equipped these rigs are. Most RVs available for rent an RV in Arivaca through RVezy come with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave), bathroom with shower, queen or king bed, dinette, roof A/C (essential for Arizona), furnace for cool desert nights, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a generator, solar panels, outdoor speakers, and an awning, which is perfect for shaded patio mornings under Arivaca's wide-open skies. TVs and Wi-Fi hotspots vary by listing. Pro tip: filter listings by Sleeps and check the amenities list for solar or a generator, since boondocking spots around Buenos Aires NWR have zero hookups.
energy.gov/energysaver/articles/small-solar-electric-systemsWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Arivaca RV rental?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons for RV rental in Arivaca include camping chairs and tables ($15 to $25), bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), bikes, generators, propane refills, and pre-stocked kitchen kits. Pet fees are typically $50 to $150 per trip if you're bringing your dog. Most Arivaca-area hosts allow flexible pickup between 1 and 4 PM and dropoff by 11 AM, though delivery to your campsite is often the smartest call given the 60-mile drive from Tucson. Mileage policies are listed clearly on each listing, often 100 to 150 free miles per night with simple per-mile overage rates. Message the host to bundle add-ons for a discount.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Arivaca,ArizonaHow does payment and the security deposit work for my Arivaca RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy (never directly to the host), with a deposit at booking and the balance typically due before pickup. A refundable security deposit, usually $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV, is placed as a hold on your card a few days before the trip and released after a smooth return. To avoid any deposit issues on your Arivaca RV trip, do the pre-trip walkaround video with your host, return the RV with the same fuel and propane level, empty the tanks at a dump station (De Anza in Amado is convenient), and give it a quick interior tidy. That's it, you're set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle Arivaca's summer heat in an RV?
Summer in Arivaca is hot but very manageable with a few smart moves. June highs average 95°F and July through September brings the monsoon, with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that actually cool things off. Pick an RV with strong roof A/C (every listing shows BTU and number of units) and plan to camp at sites with 30 or 50-amp shore power, like De Anza RV Resort or Green Valley RV Resort, so you can run A/C nonstop. Drive in the cool morning hours, hydrate constantly, and save hikes for sunrise around Buenos Aires NWR. Pro tip: shoulder seasons (October to November, March to April) are the smart-money move, lower nightly rates and 75°F daytime perfection.
