Campgrounds near Cibecue
Cibecue is a small community in Navajo County, Arizona, on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in the west-central part of tribal land. The town sits at roughly 5,200 feet along Cibecue Creek, in the transition zone between high desert and ponderosa pine forest, with surrounding ridges climbing to over 7,000 feet. Cibecue Creek flows south into the Salt River, and RV travelers usually base themselves in the surrounding White Mountains and Mogollon Rim country, then day-trip in for the scenery and fishing.
Most developed RV parks are north and east of town in the Heber-Overgaard, Show Low, and Pinetop-Lakeside corridor along State Route 260. Options in that band include White Mountain Resort, Elk Pines RV Resort, Arizona High Country Campground, Aj's Getaway RV Park, and Heber RV Resort LLC. These parks offer hookups and pull-through sites at higher elevations that stay cooler than the Phoenix basin through summer.
Camping directly on tribal land near Cibecue is handled by the White Mountain Apache Tribe Game and Fish Department rather than through federal reservation systems, and access requires a tribal permit.
Things to do near Cibecue
The signature attraction is Cibecue Falls, reached by a wet, boulder-hopping hike up Cibecue Creek from the Salt River Canyon. The route requires wading and multiple creek crossings, and the dirt spur off US 60 to the trailhead is rough and best driven in a high-clearance vehicle. A White Mountain Apache tribal permit is mandatory, and swimming is prohibited in all reservation waters.
Cibecue Creek and the many lakes on the Fort Apache Reservation, including Hawley, Reservation, and Sunrise, hold rainbow, brown, and brook trout. Salt River Canyon, crossed by US 60 south of town, offers scenic pullouts and rafting put-ins.
From RV parks along the Mogollon Rim corridor, families can also reach Woods Canyon Lake, Willow Springs Lake, Show Low Lake, and Sunrise Park ski area for hiking, paddling, and winter skiing.

Late spring through early fall is the practical window for RV travel around Cibecue. Elevations from about 5,200 feet in town to 7,000 feet along the Rim keep summer daytime highs milder than the desert below, and June is typically the warmest and driest month before the monsoon arrives.
The North American Monsoon delivers heavy, localized thunderstorms from late June or early July through mid-September, and July and August are the wettest months of the year. Cibecue Creek is a flash flood corridor during this period, so hikers should watch forecasts closely and stay out of the canyon when rain is anywhere in the drainage. Wildfire closures on tribal and Forest Service land are also possible in late spring and early summer during drought years.
Fall brings cooler nights, aspen color at higher elevations, and lower crowds. Winter is cold at these elevations: measurable snowfall is typical from October through April, and many private RV parks reduce services or close, while tribal recreation areas shift to unserviced off-season use.
How to book
Private RV parks in the surrounding White Mountains corridor, including White Mountain Resort, Elk Pines RV Resort, Arizona High Country Campground, Aj's Getaway RV Park, and Heber RV Resort LLC, take direct reservations by phone or through their own websites. Holiday weekends, Memorial Day through Labor Day, and the elk hunt seasons in fall book out fastest, so plan several weeks ahead.
Camping on the Fort Apache Reservation itself works differently. General tribal campsites are not on a federal reservation portal; every camper needs a permit from the White Mountain Apache Tribe Game and Fish Department. Permits are sold on the tribe's wmatoutdoor.org site and at authorized vendors, including a Sinclair station near the Salt River and outdoor retailers in Mesa. A Cibecue Falls Access Permit is also valid for general recreation, fishing, camping, and sightseeing on the reservation.
What to expect
The paved road to Cibecue itself is fine, but the spur to the Cibecue Falls trailhead is a narrow, one-lane dirt road on a cliffside that crosses the creek. Large motorhomes and travel trailers should not attempt it; leave the RV at a developed park along SR 260 or in the Heber-Overgaard area and day-trip in a tow vehicle or high-clearance SUV.
Cell service is limited or absent across much of the reservation and along the Rim. Download offline maps, carry paper directions, and top off fuel and water in Show Low, Payson, or Globe.
Tribal land has specific rules: swimming is prohibited in reservation waters, firearms and fireworks are banned in campgrounds, pets must be leashed, and grey and black water can only be dumped at approved facilities. Cibecue is a working community, so respect posted closures and private property.
