Clarkdale camping overview
Clarkdale sits in the Verde Valley at roughly 3,500 feet, within easy reach of Cottonwood, Jerome, Sedona, and the Verde River corridor. The area functions as a year-round RV base, with mild shoulder seasons, hot summer afternoons cooled by monsoon activity, and cool but rarely severe winters. Most campgrounds within a short drive stay open all twelve months.
RV options range from state-park camping at Dead Horse Ranch State Park, adjacent to the Verde River and its fishing lagoons, to full-hookup private resorts such as Rain Spirit RV Resort, Rio Verde RV Park, and Mountain Vu RV Park. Verde Valley RV and Camping Resort operates as a Thousand Trails property with resort-style amenities south of town.
Clarkdale itself is compact and quiet, so most travelers use nearby Cottonwood for groceries, propane, and last-mile supplies before heading out to trailheads, Tuzigoot National Monument, or the Verde Canyon Railroad depot in town.
Things to do near Clarkdale
The Verde Canyon Railroad departs from Clarkdale for a scenic ride through a roadless canyon, and Tuzigoot National Monument sits minutes away on a hilltop above the river. Dead Horse Ranch State Park features multiple lagoons with surrounding trails, perfect for fishing, wildlife viewing, and leisurely walks, and is located close to several hiking trails and the Verde River.
Jerome, the historic mining town clinging to Cleopatra Hill, is a short drive up Highway 89A, with steep streets, small museums, and views back across the valley. Sedona's red-rock trailheads at Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, and West Fork are within a 30 to 45 minute drive.
Families can combine easy river days, wine tastings along the Page Springs corridor, and short hikes at Tuzigoot or Montezuma Castle without long transfers between stops.

How to book campgrounds near Clarkdale
Dead Horse Ranch State Park campsite reservations are available online or by calling the Arizona State Parks Reservation Desk at 1-877-MY PARKS (697-2757), seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Arizona time. Reservations can be made up to 12 months before the visit online or by phone. There is a stay limit of 14 nights in a 30-day period, the park is often sold out in the spring and fall, and it is a good idea to reserve early or check availability a few days in advance.
Private parks including Rain Spirit RV Resort, Rio Verde RV Park, and Mountain Vu RV Park take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Verde Valley RV and Camping Resort is a Thousand Trails property; non-members can book stays through the operator, while members use the standard Thousand Trails booking window.

Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not individual hosts, sets the cancellation policy, so the rules are consistent across every listing in Clarkdale. There is a grace-period window shortly after booking where you can cancel for a full refund of rental fees, and refund amounts beyond that depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. azstateparks.com/dead-horse/Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Clarkdale?
Yes, RV delivery Clarkdale guests love is offered by many RVezy hosts in the Verde Valley, and it is the easiest way to start your trip, especially for first-timers. Filter listings by Delivery and your host can tow or drive the RV directly to Dead Horse Ranch State Park, Rain Spirit RV Resort, or a private property in Cottonwood or Cornville, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. Delivery fees typically run by the mile from Clarkdale, and many hosts include setup at no extra cost within a short radius. It is a great option if you would rather skip towing through Jerome's switchbacks on your first day.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clarkdale,%20ArizonaHow far can I drive on a Clarkdale RV rental, and what about mileage limits?
You have plenty of road to roam. Many Clarkdale hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, ideal for a bigger Arizona loop. From Clarkdale: Sedona is about 20 miles, Flagstaff about 50 miles, the Grand Canyon South Rim roughly 110 miles, Phoenix around 100 miles, and Petrified Forest National Park about 175 miles. nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Clarkdale, AZ?
You're spoiled for choice. Dead Horse Ranch State Park, just 10 minutes southeast in Cottonwood, is the local favorite, with full hookups, paved pads, three stocked lagoons, and direct Verde River access. Rain Spirit RV Resort in Clarkdale offers 50-amp pull-throughs and a pool with Mingus Mountain views. Distant Drums RV Resort in nearby Camp Verde (25 minutes) has resort-style amenities, and Mingus Mountain Campground in the Prescott National Forest is a cool, pine-scented escape at 7,600 feet for dry camping. azstateparks.com/dead-horse/When is the best time of year to take a Clarkdale RV trip?
Clarkdale sits at about 3,500 feet, giving it a milder climate than Phoenix and warmer winters than Flagstaff. The best windows for RV camping Clarkdale are March through May, with highs in the 70s and 80s and wildflowers along the Verde River, and September through November, with warm days, cool nights, and golden cottonwoods. Summer highs reach the mid 90s but evenings cool into the 60s, great for stargazing. Winter is pleasant with daytime highs in the 50s to low 60s and only occasional light snow, making December and January a fantastic shoulder-season value. Time your visit for mid-May to catch the Verde Valley Wine Festival.
weather.gov/fgz/I have never rented an RV before. Will I actually be able to handle it?
Yes, and Clarkdale is one of the friendliest places in Arizona for first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering leveling, water and power hookups, dumping tanks, the generator, AC, and propane. You can message your host any time during the trip, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included with your booking if something feels off. Start with a travel trailer or Class C, both are easy to handle on US-89A and the flat roads around Cottonwood. Spend your first night close by at Dead Horse Ranch State Park so you can practice the systems before heading toward Sedona or Flagstaff.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down between Clarkdale and Sedona?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat on US-89A, a dead battery at the Tuzigoot parking lot, or an engine issue climbing toward Jerome is one call away from help. Roadside covers tows, jump-starts, lockouts, tire changes, and fuel delivery. Your host is also typically a quick text away for questions about quirks of their specific rig. Cell coverage is generally solid throughout the Verde Valley on major carriers, though it can dip in Sycamore Canyon Wilderness. Snap a photo of the RV's VIN and save your host's number before you pull away, it speeds up any roadside call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Clarkdale RV rental into other states or across the border?
Yes to neighboring states, but Mexico is not permitted. From Clarkdale you can take your RVezy rental into Utah (Zion is about 5 hours), New Mexico, Nevada (Las Vegas about 4.5 hours), and California, since the protection plan covers travel throughout the continental US. Travel into Mexico is not allowed because insurance and protection coverage do not extend across the border. Cross-country trips may require specific host approval, so message the host first to confirm. A popular RV road trip from Clarkdale is the Grand Circle: Grand Canyon, Page, Zion, and Bryce, an easy two weeks of stunning scenery. Ask your host about extending the booking if you want to keep going.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Clarkdale RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's easy to plan for. Expect roughly 8 to 10 mpg for a Class C, 6 to 8 mpg for a Class A, 10 to 14 mpg for a campervan, and 12 to 18 mpg for the tow vehicle on a travel trailer. Arizona gas prices typically run a touch above the national average; Cottonwood and Camp Verde have the cheapest pumps near Clarkdale, and Flying J in Camp Verde off I-17 has RV-friendly lanes and diesel. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop in a Class C, plan around $180 to $250 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Cottonwood before heading into Sedona, prices jump noticeably once you hit the red rocks.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Clarkdale?
For peak weekends, book as soon as your RV is reserved, ideally 3 to 6 months ahead for March through May and September through November. Dead Horse Ranch State Park reservations are made through azstateparks.com and open up to one year in advance; sites for wine-festival weekends often go quickly. Federal sites like Mingus Mountain Campground in the Prescott National Forest book through recreation.gov on a 6-month rolling window. Private parks such as Rain Spirit RV Resort in Clarkdale and Distant Drums in Camp Verde take direct reservations and usually have more flexibility. Midweek arrivals are easier; aim for a Sunday or Monday check-in to score the prettiest riverside loops at Dead Horse Ranch.
azstateparks.com/reserve/What are the local driving conditions like around Clarkdale?
Driving around Clarkdale is mostly relaxed and scenic, with one big caveat: the climb between Clarkdale and Jerome on US-89A is steep and full of tight switchbacks topping out at Mingus Mountain (7,023 feet). Take it slow in low gear and you'll be fine, but most renters skip it in larger Class A rigs and instead loop through Cottonwood and I-17. Summer monsoon storms (July to early September) can drop heavy rain and create flash-flood washes, never drive through flooded dips. Winter occasionally brings light snow up on Mingus. Pro tip: download offline maps before you leave Clarkdale; canyon stretches near Sycamore and the Verde Canyon Railroad route can drop cell signal briefly.
az511.gov/Where can I dump tanks and fill fresh water near Clarkdale?
You've got easy options. Dead Horse Ranch State Park offers a public dump station and potable water fill open to non-campers for a small fee, just 10 minutes from downtown Clarkdale. Rain Spirit RV Resort in Clarkdale and Distant Drums RV Resort in Camp Verde also have dump stations available to overnight guests. Most campgrounds in the Verde Valley provide flush toilets, hot showers, and at minimum water and electric hookups; Dead Horse Ranch has full hookup sites with 30/50-amp service. Pro tip: if you're boondocking on Forest Service land near Sycamore Canyon, top off fresh water and dump before you leave town, the nearest services once you head north are over an hour away.
azstateparks.com/dead-horse/What amenities come standard in a Clarkdale RV rental?
Most RVs on RVezy in Clarkdale come fully equipped: a queen or king bed, convertible dinettes, fridge and freezer, propane stove and oven, microwave, full bathroom with shower and toilet, roof AC, furnace, and house batteries. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes typically add a generator, a TV, and seatbelted seating for 4 to 7. Many hosts include linens, kitchen kits, camp chairs, and outdoor mats, and some offer Starlink or hotspot Wi-Fi as an add-on, useful if you are working remotely from Clarkdale. Review the listing's amenity list and message the host about any must-haves, like a generator for boondocking near Sycamore Canyon, before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clarkdale,%20ArizonaWhat add-ons can I get with my Clarkdale RV rental?
Common RVezy add-ons in Clarkdale include delivery and setup, generator usage, bike racks, camp chair and table kits, kayak and SUP racks (handy with Verde River access right in town), linen and kitchen packages, and pet cleaning. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Clarkdale, Cottonwood, or Cornville in the early afternoon, with drop-off late morning; your host will confirm exact times in chat. Mileage allowances and generator hours are shown clearly in each listing. Bundle delivery with a kayak rack and you have basically pre-built the perfect Verde River weekend for your motorhome rental Clarkdale getaway.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clarkdale,%20ArizonaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It is simple and fully handled inside the platform, with no cash payments. When you book your RV rental in Clarkdale, you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup. As long as the RV is returned in the same condition with tanks emptied and fuel topped, the hold is released after the trip. Document the RV at pickup and drop-off with timestamped photos; the RVezy app makes this easy. If you are visiting from Canada or abroad, using a credit card with no foreign transaction fees can save a little on the way to the Verde Canyon Railroad.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Clarkdale?
Clarkdale is one of the best launchpads in Arizona. Top picks include Sedona's red rocks (20 miles, about 30 minutes), Flagstaff and the San Francisco Peaks (50 miles, around 1 hour), the Grand Canyon South Rim (110 miles, roughly 2.5 hours), Petrified Forest and Painted Desert (about 175 miles), Prescott via Mingus Mountain (35 scenic miles of switchbacks), and Page and Lake Powell (about 4 hours for a family RV trip Clarkdale parents will love). Closer to home, do not skip Tuzigoot National Monument, the Jerome ghost town, and Montezuma Castle. A 7-day loop covering Sedona, Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, and Page is the classic Northern Arizona itinerary.
