Campgrounds and RV parks near Claypool, AZ

Roosevelt Lake anchors most outdoor plans. The reservoir supports fishing, motorized and non-motorized boating, and shoreline hiking, and the surrounding desert and mountain ecosystems draw bird watchers looking for migratory waterfowl and bald eagles. Tonto National Monument sits on the south shore with cliff-dwelling ruins reached by a short trail. Closer to town, Globe offers Besh-Ba-Gowah Archaeological Park, antique shops, and access to the Pinal Mountains for higher-elevation hiking. OHV riders can stage at the Mescal Mountains OHV Area for 4x4 loops through canyons and washes. Golfers can play the Apache Stronghold course at Apache Gold Casino Resort, and drivers can loop the Salt River Canyon on U.S. 60 for canyon overlooks.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Claypool. Daytime highs sit in a mild range from March into May and again from October into November, which lines up with the busiest reservation demand at Roosevelt Lake campgrounds. Summer brings sustained heat, with June highs reaching the upper 90s Fahrenheit and clear skies. Cholla Recreation Site observes a seasonal closure from June 1 through October 1, so lake-adjacent Forest Service capacity drops during that stretch. The North American monsoon typically arrives in early July, and July and August are the wettest months, with brief but intense afternoon thunderstorms and localized flash flooding in washes. Fire restrictions on Tonto National Forest and BLM land are common through the dry pre-monsoon period. Winter is the primary reservation season at Roosevelt Lake: Cholla accepts reservations for odd-numbered sites from November 1 through March 15, while even-numbered sites remain first come, first served. Bald eagle seasonal closures apply to some shoreline zones from December 1 through June 30. Lake levels also fluctuate with precipitation and irrigation demand, which can affect boat ramp access.

Private RV parks in the area lean utilitarian. Apache Gold Casino Resort offers a paved pull-through layout with full hookups, 30 and 50 amp service, showers, laundry, and a pool, with fuel and dining on the casino property. Expect highway-adjacent placement and limited shade, so plan for sun exposure in warm months. Forest Service sites at Roosevelt Lake typically offer picnic tables, shade ramadas, fire rings with grills, flush or vault toilets, and paved boat ramps. Cholla is one of the largest solar-powered campgrounds in the United States and includes potable water and showers when in season. Dispersed and OHV sites on BLM and Tonto National Forest land are basic: pack in water, pack out trash, and check current fire restrictions before arrival.
