Spring and fall are the strongest seasons for RV travel in this part of northeastern Arizona. Days run mild to warm, nights stay cool, and winds ease between storm systems. April can be gusty, so high-profile rigs should watch forecasts before crossing exposed sections of I-40. Summer brings hot afternoons, but the elevation keeps overnight temperatures more comfortable than lower desert basins. Winslow experiences a cold desert climate marked by very low annual precipitation, with hot summers and a small increase in rainfall during late summer. This late-summer monsoon pattern produces short but intense thunderstorms, flash flooding in washes, and occasional road closures across tribal routes. Winter is quiet. Homolovi Ruins State Park is open year-round, and most private RV parks along I-40 also stay open, though water hookups may be shut off during hard freezes. Winters are cold and bring occasional snowfall, so travelers should carry cold-weather gear and check road conditions before crossing higher terrain toward Flagstaff.

Sites in this region are mostly open high-desert pads with limited natural shade. Homolovi Ruins State Park includes both back-in and pull-through sites that can handle large rigs. Most sites have 30 amp hookups, pull-through sites have both 30 amp and 50 amp hookups, and the maximum RV length is 83 feet. The campground fee includes use of the park's day-use recreation areas plus the showers and dump station. The flat expanses around Homolovi Ruins can get very windy, so high-profile vehicles should take extra care. Level pads and paved interior roads are common at private parks along I-40, along with full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Petrified Forest National Park does not permit developed RV, car, or front-country camping. Plan to stay outside park boundaries and day-trip in.
