Campgrounds and RV parks near Globe, AZ

Besh-Ba-Gowah Archaeological Park preserves a Salado Culture pueblo with an interpretive trail through what was once a 200-plus room complex. Downtown Globe has walkable historic blocks with independent shops and restaurants centered on Broad Street, plus the Gila County Historical Museum and the Old Dominion Mine Park. The switchbacks down the Salt River Canyon are one of the most scenic portions of the drive north on U.S. 60, with a rest area at the bottom near the steel arch bridge and short trails to the canyon floor. Whitewater rafting on the Upper Salt is a seasonal Class III to IV run, permitted March through mid-May by Tonto National Forest and the White Mountain Apache Tribe. Roosevelt Lake supports boating, bass fishing, and swimming, while Tonto National Monument protects Salado cliff dwellings on the south shore.

Summers around Globe are hot, dry, and mostly clear, and winters are cool and partly cloudy. The most comfortable stretch runs March through mid-May and October through mid-November, when daytime highs sit in the seventies and low eighties and desert wildflowers can bloom after wet winters. Nights stay cool enough to need a jacket into April. Summer brings intense heat in town and in the Salt River Canyon. Temperatures inside the canyon push past 100°F, and hiking or being outside for long stretches at the bottom is not advisable. Higher elevations north of Globe on the Mogollon Rim run considerably cooler. Monsoon storms typically arrive in July and August, with afternoon thunderstorms, flash-flood risk in washes, and brief road closures possible. Winter is a genuine shoulder season. The canyon rims can see snow, and ice on the roads can be dangerous without preparation, so drivers should monitor conditions before setting out. In-town RV parks generally stay open year-round, while some Tonto National Forest sites along Roosevelt Lake shift to first-come, first-served operation from April through October.

Globe sits in mountainous mining country, and streets and older parts of town are steep and narrow. RV drivers should plan routes carefully, especially with larger rigs, and stick to U.S. 60 or State Route 188 rather than backstreets. Fuel, groceries, propane, and RV supplies are all available in Globe and neighboring Claypool. Cell coverage is reliable in town and along the main highways but drops in the Salt River Canyon, on parts of Roosevelt Lake, and across the San Carlos Apache Reservation. Download offline maps before leaving. Wildlife includes javelina, mule deer, and rattlesnakes; keep food secured and pets leashed. The Salt River Canyon crosses tribal land, with the San Carlos Apache Tribe on the south bank and the White Mountain Apache Tribe on the north; recreational permits from the relevant tribe are required to leave the highway corridor. Summer travelers should carry extra water, and monsoon-season campers should avoid washes and low-lying sites.
