Campgrounds near Hondah, Arizona
Hondah sits in the White Mountains of east-central Arizona at the junction of State Routes 260 and 73, inside the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. The area sits at roughly 7,000 feet in ponderosa pine forest, and it works as a base for the Pinetop-Lakeside corridor, Sunrise Park Resort, and the tribe's high-country lakes and streams.
Most campgrounds within a short drive fall into two groups. Private full-hookup RV parks like Ponderosa RV Resort and Rainbow Forest RV Park in nearby Lakeside cater to longer stays and 50-amp rigs. Tribal campgrounds on the reservation, including Cooley Lake Apache Indian Res, Lower Log Road Apache Indian Res, and Upper Log Apache Reservation, are more primitive and require White Mountain Apache Tribe permits.
RV renters should note that Ponderosa RV Resort is a 55+ community, so travelers with children will typically look to Rainbow Forest RV Park or reservation campgrounds. Distances from Hondah to the Lakeside RV parks are short, generally under ten miles on State Route 260.
Things to do near Hondah
Fishing and paddling dominate the summer schedule. The Fort Apache Indian Reservation includes more than 400 miles of streams and over 25 lakes stocked with Apache, rainbow, brown, and brook trout. Cooley Lake, Hawley Lake, and Sunrise Lake are all within a short drive of Hondah, and tribal permits are required in place of a state license.
Hiking and scenic driving are strong from spring through fall. Gas motors on tribal waters are limited, with Sunrise Lake the main option for boaters.
In winter, Sunrise Park Resort, roughly 20 miles east, runs downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and tubing. The Hon-Dah Resort Casino sits at the junction itself, and Kinishba Ruins and the Apache Cultural Center at Fort Apache are the main heritage stops for travelers interested in tribal history.

The prime RV window runs from late May through mid-October. Summer daytime highs sit in the low 80s Fahrenheit with cool nights, and the elevation keeps Hondah dramatically cooler than Phoenix. July and August bring the North American monsoon, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, lightning, and localized flash-flood risk on dirt access roads. August is typically the wettest month.
Spring is dry and windy. Nights can still drop below freezing into May, so RVers should plan for freeze protection on early-season trips. Fall brings crisp days, aspen color in late September and early October, and lighter crowds after Labor Day.
Winter is cold and snowy. The area averages roughly 54 inches of snow, most of it from December through February, and mountain passes can close briefly during storms. Many private RV parks close for the season, while tribal campgrounds are primarily served Memorial Day through Labor Day, with off-season use allowed on a pack-in, pack-out basis.

How to book campgrounds near Hondah
Private parks in Lakeside take direct reservations by phone or through their websites. Ponderosa RV Resort and Rainbow Forest RV Park both fill quickly for summer, and Ponderosa is limited to guests 55 and older, with roughly 141 to 150 full-hookup sites and a May through October season. Short-stay availability at either park should be confirmed early.
Camping on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, including Cooley Lake Apache Indian Res, Lower Log Road Apache Indian Res, and Upper Log Apache Reservation, is first-come, first-served and does not accept advance reservations. Permits must be purchased before arriving at a site, either online through the White Mountain Apache Tribe Game and Fish Department or in person at Hon-Dah Outdoor Sport and the Hon-Dah convenience store in Hondah. Permits are non-refundable and non-transferable.
What to expect
Reservation campgrounds are basic. Sites typically have a picnic table, fire ring, toilet facilities, and trash service during the served season, but no hookups. In primitive areas campers are expected to pack out all trash and human waste, and drinking water is not guaranteed, so RV renters should arrive with full fresh-water tanks.
One camping-per-vehicle permit covers up to eight people or one vehicle, and an RV towing an unoccupied vehicle counts as one unit. Holiday weekends around Memorial Day and July 4th are the busiest, with most other weekends holding vacancies. Firearms, fireworks, and dumping of grey or black water outside designated stations are prohibited.
Elevation is around 7,000 feet, so afternoon storms build fast in monsoon season, nights are cool even in July, and generators may run harder at altitude. Cell service is spotty once off State Route 260.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hondah, AZ?

Travel trailers typically start around $95 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches range from about $250 to $400. Because Hondah sits at around 7,000 feet on the Fort Apache Reservation, summer weekends fill quickly and prices climb, so booking midweek or during the May or September shoulder seasons is a smart move. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hondah%2C%20ArizonaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Hondah, Arizona?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hondah, with no special endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required, even for the largest Class A motorhomes on RVezy. Approved drivers must generally be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the booking process so there is nothing to print or bring to pickup. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country along with your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised by how simple the paperwork is, leaving you free to focus on the scenic drive up Highway 260 into the pines.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included in Hondah?
Yes, every RV rental in Hondah booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head into the White Mountains with confidence. The protection plan covers eligible physical damage to the RV, and you choose your coverage level (basic, standard, or premium) at checkout, not the host. Roadside assistance is included at no extra cost and covers common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. That means a hiccup on the way to Sunrise Park Resort or at a trailhead is a quick call away from being resolved.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Hondah RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and every reservation includes a grace period right after booking so you can lock in a great rig with peace of mind. Refund eligibility depends on how far in advance you cancel and the circumstances of your trip. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your payment or provides travel credits so your plans stay on track. If your dates shift, contact RVezy support and they will walk you through your options, making it easy to plan a Hondah RV trip months ahead even during Arizona's monsoon or wildfire season.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Hondah?
Absolutely, and Hondah is a dream destination for dog owners. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Hondah options are available on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see only listings where dogs are welcome. Once you're here, your pup will love the cool 70 degree summer days and miles of leash-friendly trails in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, plus the shoreline walks at Hawley Lake and Big Lake. Hon-Dah RV Park even has a dedicated pet area. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees (usually $25 to $75 per stay) and ask about nearby vets in Pinetop-Lakeside, just 4 miles east.
fs.usda.gov/asnfCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Hondah?
Yes, RV delivery in Hondah is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip the mountain drive. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome or travel trailer directly at Hon-Dah RV Park, Lakeside Campground, or a private cabin rental, then walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees are set by the host and typically range from a flat fee to a per-mile rate, with some offering free delivery within a set radius. Use the Delivery filter when searching, or message a host to confirm. It is the easiest way to start your White Mountains adventure stress-free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hondah%2C%20ArizonaHow far can I drive my Hondah RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
You've got plenty of range from Hondah, and yes, RV rental with unlimited mileage is offered by many hosts on RVezy: just look for the unlimited mileage badge on the listing. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with additional miles at $0.35 to $0.50 each. From Hondah, that's enough to reach Sunrise Park Resort (20 miles), the Petrified Forest National Park (90 miles), Salt River Canyon (60 miles), or even the Grand Canyon's South Rim (210 miles) for a multi-day loop. If you're planning a longer RV road trip from Hondah, filter for unlimited mileage upfront and you'll save a noticeable chunk on fuel-budget anxiety.
nps.gov/pefo/index.htmWhat are the best campgrounds near Hondah, AZ?
Hondah is surrounded by some of the best campgrounds in Arizona. Hon-Dah RV Park, right at the junction of Highways 260 and 73, offers full-hookup sites, a casino, and a stocked trout pond. Lakeside Campground in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest sits near Rainbow Lake with shaded sites well suited to travel trailers. Hawley Lake Campground, about 20 miles southeast, is one of Arizona's highest at roughly 8,200 feet, ideal for cool summer escapes. Show Low Lake Campground (about 15 miles north) offers great fishing access, and Big Lake Recreation Area about an hour southeast is a quieter option. Pro tip: book Forest Service sites on Recreation.gov up to six months ahead for July and August weekends.
recreation.gov/When is the best time to visit Hondah for an RV trip?
Hondah is a true four-season destination, sitting near 7,000 feet where summers are cool and winters bring real snow. June through early September is peak season with daytime highs typically in the 70s and crisp nights in the 40s, making it a popular escape from Phoenix's summer heat. Fall (late September into October) brings golden aspens and quieter campgrounds. Winter (December to March) is a snow-play season with Sunrise Park Resort nearby, though you will want a four-season RV. May and October are shoulder-season sweet spots with great weather, lower rates, and easier campground bookings for your White Mountains motorhome rental in Hondah.
weather.gov/fgz/I've never driven an RV before. Is Hondah a good place to start?
Hondah is a great spot for your first time renting an RV. Highway 260 into town is a well-maintained route with gentle grades and far less traffic than driving an RV around Phoenix or Tucson. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how the slide-outs, water systems, generator, and dump valves work before you leave. You are never left to figure it out alone, and 24/7 roadside assistance is one tap away. Pro tip: book a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer for your first trip, and ask your host to demonstrate backing into a campsite. You will feel confident by day two.
azdot.gov/adot-news/safe-driving-tips-rv-travelersWhat happens if my RV breaks down near Hondah?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so whether you have a flat on Highway 260, a dead battery at Hawley Lake, or a generator issue at Hon-Dah RV Park, help is one phone call away. Towing, tire changes, jump starts, and lockout service are all handled. The nearest full-service RV repair shops are in Show Low and Pinetop-Lakeside, both within about 15 miles, and cell service is reliable along the main highways though it can be spotty deep in the national forest. Pro tip: download offline maps before heading into the Apache-Sitgreaves backcountry, and keep your host's contact info handy in the RVezy app for quick questions.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Hondah?
Hondah is one of Arizona's best basecamps for scenic loops. A classic RV road trip from Hondah is the Coronado Trail (Highway 191) south through Alpine and Hannagan Meadow, about 90 miles of mountain switchbacks and pine forest. Head north to the Petrified Forest National Park and Painted Desert (90 miles, roughly 1.5 hours). Drop down the dramatic Salt River Canyon to Globe (75 miles) for a true Arizona contrast. Or take a 3-day trip west to Sedona (180 miles) and the Grand Canyon South Rim (210 miles). Travel to Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals, but Arizona alone offers more variety than most full countries.
nps.gov/grca/index.htmWhat's the fuel budget for an RV rental in Hondah?
Fuel is one of the biggest line items, but it's predictable. Class C motorhomes get roughly 8 to 12 miles per gallon, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 mpg), and campervan rental Hondah options like Class B vans can hit 16 to 20 mpg. Arizona gas prices in the Show Low and Pinetop area typically run a bit higher than Phoenix because of the mountain location, so fill up in Show Low before heading deeper into the forest. For a 4-day, 300-mile loop in a Class C, budget around $150 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: the Maverik in Pinetop-Lakeside usually has the best diesel prices nearby.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hondah?
Book early, especially for summer. Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest campgrounds like Lakeside, Hawley Lake, and Big Lake open reservations on Recreation.gov exactly six months ahead, and the prime July and August weekends are typically gone within hours of going live. Hon-Dah RV Park takes reservations directly through its website and tends to fill 2 to 3 months out for holiday weekends. For shoulder-season trips in May, September, or October you can often score sites 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for 6 months before your trip at 7 a.m. Mountain Time on Recreation.gov, then have a backup site picked out in case your first choice is gone.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Hondah?
Driving an RV around Hondah is genuinely manageable, even in something larger. Highway 260 from Show Low is wide and gently graded, and Highway 73 through the Fort Apache Reservation is quiet and scenic. Watch for summer monsoon storms (July through early September) that can drop heavy rain and brief hail in the afternoons, so plan to drive earlier in the day. Wildlife crossings, especially elk at dawn and dusk, are common, so keep speeds reasonable. Winter brings snow and occasional ice from November through March, when chains or snow tires may be required on mountain routes. The Salt River Canyon south of town has steep grades, so downshift and use your brakes carefully on descents.
az511.gov/What hookups and amenities do Hondah area campgrounds offer?
You've got options at every level. Hon-Dah RV Park offers full hookups (30/50 amp electric, water, sewer) plus Wi-Fi, a dump station, propane refills, laundry, and showers, making it ideal for any size rig. Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest campgrounds like Lakeside and Hawley Lake are more rustic with potable water spigots and vault toilets, but no hookups, so you'll rely on your RV's freshwater tank, battery, and generator (where permitted). The closest public dump stations are at Hon-Dah RV Park and Show Low's Fool Hollow Lake State Park. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank in Show Low or Pinetop before heading to forest campgrounds, and bring a portable solar panel for longer off-grid stays.
azstateparks.com/fool-hollow/What's inside a typical RV rental in Hondah?
You'll be impressed by how dialed-in these rigs are. Most RV camping Hondah rentals come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, additional sleeping for 4 to 8 people on convertible dinettes and bunks, a full kitchen (stove, oven, microwave, fridge, sink), bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control, and dining/lounge space. Many include a generator for boondocking, a TV with DVD or streaming setup, and some have Wi-Fi boosters that help in spotty mountain coverage. Seatbelts are provided for all road-legal passengers (check the listing for the exact count). Bedding, kitchenware, and camp chairs are often included or available as add-ons. Message the host before booking to confirm what's provided so you only pack what you actually need.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and options are available with my Hondah RV rental?
Hosts offer some genuinely useful add-ons to customize your trip. Common options include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, generator fuel, propane, bikes, kayaks, fishing gear (perfect for Hawley and Rainbow Lakes), fire pits, and outdoor mats. Delivery and setup is one of the most popular add-ons, especially for travel trailers heading to forest campgrounds. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Pinetop-Lakeside, Show Low, or Hondah itself, with most hosts offering flexible 1 p.m. pickup and 11 a.m. dropoff windows. Mileage policies range from 100 free miles per night to unlimited, so check the listing or message the host. Pro tip: bundling delivery plus a bedding kit saves time and lets you arrive trip-ready.
visitarizona.com/places/regions/white-mountains/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay the full booking amount through the RVezy platform when you confirm, so there is no cash, no checks, and no awkward handoffs with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup and released after your trip, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, and odometer at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's mileage and generator-hours policies, and return the RV with fuel and propane at the levels noted in the listing. Everything is documented in your RVezy account for easy reference.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Hondah RV rental into the snow or in winter?
Yes, winter RV trips from Hondah can be magical, with Sunrise Park Resort's ski slopes about 20 miles away and snowy pine forests all around. Many local hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, propane furnaces, and added insulation, ideal for December through March stays. Hon-Dah RV Park stays open year-round with full hookups, so you can plug into shore power and stay warm. Use the RVezy filter for winter-ready rigs, or ask the host directly about cold-weather capability. Pro tip: pack tire chains, expect overnight lows in the teens, and book a site with 50-amp service so you can run electric heaters alongside the furnace.
