Campgrounds and RV parks near Joseph City, AZ

Petrified Forest National Park is the anchor attraction. The park runs a scenic drive between two entrances on I-40 and Highway 180, with pullouts at Blue Mesa, Crystal Forest, and the Painted Desert overlooks. All vehicles must clear the park before it closes each evening, and there is no drive-in RV camping inside the boundary. Homolovi State Park protects Ancestral Puebloan sites tied to modern Hopi heritage, with short interpretive trails to Homolovi I and II and a visitor center focused on regional archaeology. Winslow itself offers Standin' on the Corner Park, the restored La Posada Hotel, and access to Meteor Crater about 20 miles west. Holbrook has the Navajo County Historical Museum and remnants of Route 66 roadside architecture.

Spring and fall are the practical booking windows. From March through May and again from mid-September through October, daytime highs sit in the comfortable 60s to low 80s Fahrenheit, and precipitation stays low. Wind can be strong in April and May, which matters for slide-outs and awnings on the exposed plateau. Summer brings hot afternoons in the low 90s and the North American monsoon. July and August are the wettest months, with brief but intense thunderstorms rolling through most afternoons. Flash flooding can close backcountry areas in Petrified Forest, and dust storms occasionally shut down stretches of I-40. Overnight lows stay in the 60s, which keeps sleeping comfortable without heavy air conditioning. Winter is cold but usable. Daytime highs sit in the upper 40s Fahrenheit with overnight lows around 30. Snow is occasional rather than persistent, and Petrified Forest stays open year-round except Christmas Day. Homolovi State Park and most private parks in Holbrook operate through winter, though some sites and services scale back.

This is high-desert country above 5,000 feet. Sites are typically open, with sparse vegetation and long views, so shade is limited. Sun exposure is intense at elevation even on cool days, and wind is a regular feature rather than an exception. Bring leveling blocks; some private lots are graded gravel rather than paved. Hookups vary. Homolovi has electric and water at most sites, with 30-amp service standard and 50-amp on the pull-throughs, plus a dump station on site. The KOA and Gateway properties typically offer full hookups and can accommodate larger rigs. Cell service is generally reliable along the I-40 corridor and weaker inside the national park. Wildlife encounters tend to be low-key: pronghorn, jackrabbits, lizards, and free-roaming wild horses and burros around Homolovi. Rattlesnakes are present in warm months, so watch footing near rocks and brush. Collecting petrified wood or artifacts is prohibited throughout the national park.
