Campgrounds and RV parks near Lake of the Woods, AZ

Fishing is the primary draw. Local lakes hold stocked rainbow trout plus bluegill, catfish, and largemouth bass, and Fool Hollow Lake also produces smallmouth bass, walleye, and channel catfish. Small motors are the rule at Fool Hollow, which limits boats to 10 horsepower gasoline engines, and many smaller lakes restrict or prohibit gas motors entirely. The Lakeside Ranger District of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest oversees the White Mountains Trail System, a network of more than 200 miles of non-motorized trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Trailheads at Timber Mesa, Woodland Lake Park, and Los Caballos connect directly to it. For families, Woodland Lake Park has a playground, paved lake loop, and picnic ramadas. Sunrise Park Resort on the Apache reservation adds summer activities and downhill skiing in winter. Hon-Dah Resort Casino sits at the junction of highways 260 and 73 for a rainy-day option.

Summer is peak season. June is typically the warmest and driest month, with daytime highs in the low 80s and cool nights that make RV air conditioning largely optional at this elevation. The North American monsoon usually arrives from late June through early July and runs into September, bringing near-daily afternoon thunderstorms, and August is the wettest month of the year. Spring is dry and often windy, with snow still possible into April at higher elevations. Wildflowers appear in May, and trout stocking ramps up as the ice comes off small lakes. Fall brings crisp days, aspen and oak color from late September into October, and cold nights that drop below freezing by November. Winter is cold and snowy. December and January are the coldest months, with average lows in the upper 20s Fahrenheit, and Pinetop-Lakeside averages roughly 60 inches of snow per year. Many seasonal campgrounds close from late October through April, while a smaller set of RV parks stay open year-round for snowbirds and skiers heading to Sunrise Park Resort.

Elevation is the biggest factor. Sites sit around 6,200 to 6,900 feet, so expect cool nights even in July, reduced engine power on grades, and a real chance of afternoon thunderstorms in monsoon season. Pack layers and rain gear year-round. Most private RV parks in the area offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, potable water, and dump stations. Fool Hollow provides hookup loops and tent-only sites and stays open year-round, with the park recommending rigs no longer than 40 feet. Cell coverage is generally reliable on Verizon and AT&T along the 260 corridor but drops off quickly on forest roads. Fire restrictions are common from late spring through the monsoon. Stage 1 or Stage 2 restrictions can ban open fires and charcoal even at developed campgrounds, so check the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest and Navajo County alerts before arrival, and never bring outside firewood into the area.
