Elevation drives the calendar here. Flagstaff has a semi-arid climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are mild, with average highs in the 80s, and a monsoon season brings thunderstorms from July to September. Winters are cold, with plentiful snowfall, making the area a destination for skiing and other snow activities. Spring and fall are generally mild and dry, suited to outdoor travel at nearby parks and monuments. Late spring and early summer are typically dry and windy, which raises wildfire risk. Fires are common in northern Arizona in June, and the increased moisture and humidity of the seasonal monsoon typically reduces significant fire development by early to mid July. Fire restrictions can close forest campgrounds and dispersed camping areas on short notice, so check status before arrival. Monsoon storms shift trip planning in mid-summer, with heavy afternoon rain common on many days from late July into August. Winter brings road closures at higher elevations, and many Forest Service campgrounds shut down between fall and spring.

Expect pine forest, thin dry air, and cool nights even in summer. Due to the dry air and high elevation, large temperature swings between days and nights are common, with early morning lows often 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than afternoon highs. Pack layers, and plan on running the furnace overnight in shoulder season. Private parks near Flagstaff generally offer full hookups, dump stations, laundry, showers, and Wi-Fi. Sites are often shaded by ponderosa pines, which can affect satellite reception and solar. Forest Service campgrounds are more basic, and some take cash only on site while credit cards are accepted when reservations are made through Recreation.gov. Wildlife includes elk and mule deer, so store food securely. Fire restrictions may prohibit campfires and charcoal grills during dry spells.
