Camping near Mountainaire, Arizona
Mountainaire is a small forested community south of Flagstaff, Arizona, sitting just off Interstate 17 at roughly 7,000 feet elevation. The area lies within the Colorado Plateau, at the base of the San Francisco Peaks and inside the largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest in the United States. That setting shapes both the camping experience and the seasonal calendar.
RV renters use Mountainaire as a quieter base for exploring the Flagstaff area, the San Francisco Peaks, and the northern edge of the Verde Valley. Most developed campgrounds sit within a short drive north toward Flagstaff or south toward Munds Park. Nearby options include Fort Tuthill County Campground, Kit Carson RV Park, Black Barts RV Park, Woody Mountain Campground, and Munds Park RV Resort.
The surrounding Coconino National Forest covers more than 1.8 million acres of public land, giving RV travelers access to hiking, fishing, and dispersed forest camping within minutes of any developed site.
Things to do near Mountainaire
Lake Mary Road runs east from the area toward a chain of lakes used for fishing, paddling, and elk viewing. Mormon Lake, Arizona's largest natural lake, sits along this corridor. Upper Lake Mary is a popular spot for fishing and non-motorized boating just a few miles from Fort Tuthill County Campground.
Downtown Flagstaff, Lowell Observatory, and Northern Arizona University are all a short drive north. To the south, the Interstate 17 corridor connects RV travelers to Sedona's red rocks and Oak Creek Canyon. Families staying at Fort Tuthill County Campground have direct access to the county park, which includes a bike park, archery range, military museum, equestrian arena, disc golf, and the Pepsi Amphitheater concert venue.

The camping season in this part of northern Arizona is short and elevation-driven. Most developed campgrounds operate from spring through mid-fall. Fort Tuthill County Campground typically takes reservations from early May through mid-October, with the season opening in early May.
Summer brings the North American Monsoon. Afternoon thunderstorms are common from July through September, and the interior campground roads are dirt, so they can get dusty in dry weeks and muddy during monsoon storms. RV renters should plan for daily storms and possible flash flooding on forest roads.
Spring and early summer are dry and windy with elevated wildfire risk. Wildfire is a major concern across the Coconino National Forest, and fire restrictions or prescribed-burn smoke can affect the Mountainaire area directly. Winter brings heavy snow at this elevation, and most private RV parks and the county campground are closed during the coldest months.

How to book a campsite near Mountainaire
Booking systems vary by operator. Fort Tuthill County Campground opens each spring on Campspot, and the campground also holds sites for first-come, first-served walk-ups. Reservations require a minimum three-day lead time. Private parks such as Kit Carson RV Park, Black Barts RV Park, Woody Mountain Campground, and Munds Park RV Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or phone lines.
For National Forest campgrounds around Flagstaff, reservations are handled through Recreation.gov on a six-month rolling window that opens at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time each day. Holiday weekends and the Coconino County Fair over Labor Day, which is held at Fort Tuthill Park, fill sites well in advance, so book those dates months out.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a true high-country pine forest setting. Sites at Fort Tuthill sit under tall ponderosa pines that provide shade in summer and drop needles year-round. The county campground offers RV and tent sites with picnic tables, fire rings, portable toilets, and water spigots, and there is a dump and water fill station. Only eight sites have water and sewer hookups, and no sites have electricity, so RV renters relying on full hookups should choose a private park instead.
Cell service is generally usable along the Interstate 17 corridor and thins out on forest roads. Elk, deer, and smaller wildlife are commonly seen around campsites. Nights are cool even in July at 7,000 feet, so pack layers. Fire restrictions change through the season, so check current stage-one or stage-two rules with the Coconino National Forest before arrival, since campfire and generator use can be limited on short notice.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Mountainaire, AZ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Mountainaire, AZ?
RV rental in Mountainaire is one of the most affordable ways to explore northern Arizona's high country. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300, and larger Class A rigs can reach $300 or more. Because Mountainaire sits just south of Flagstaff along I-17, you can often save by booking midweek or in the shoulder seasons of April-May and September-October. Look for hosts offering unlimited mileage if you plan a Grand Canyon or Sedona loop, and use the price filter to find cheap RV rental Mountainaire options under $130 per night.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mountainaire%2C%20ArizonaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Mountainaire?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Mountainaire, AZ. Arizona does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers, even larger Class A rigs. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork on pickup day. Visiting from overseas? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit (IDP), which any auto association issues for around $20. That's it. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly they're cleared to hit Lake Mary Road.
azdot.gov/motor-vehicles/driver-services/driver-license-informationWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Mountainaire?
Every RVezy booking in Mountainaire comes with a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you pull onto I-17. The protection plan helps cover most physical damage to the RV during your trip, which is reassuring if a pine branch nicks the awning at a Coconino National Forest campsite or a rock chips the windshield on a forest road. During checkout you choose the coverage level that fits your trip, with lower deductibles on the higher tiers. Hosts do not pick the level, you do, and roadside assistance is included with every plan.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Mountainaire RV trip changes?
Booking an RV rental in Mountainaire is low-risk thanks to RVezy's platform-wide cancellation policy. RVezy, not individual hosts, sets the cancellation terms, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates without stress. Refund amounts after the grace period depend on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. You will find the full policy details in the RVezy Help Center, and if a host ever cancels on you, RVezy provides a refund or travel credit. Book early for July events in Flagstaff, then relax knowing the grace period has your back.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Mountainaire RV rental?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Mountainaire options are easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see plenty of hosts who welcome dogs, often with no extra fee. Once you're here, your pup will love the trails: dogs on leash are welcome throughout Coconino National Forest, on the Arizona Trail segments crossing Mountainaire, and at Buffalo Park in nearby Flagstaff. Lower Lake Mary and Walnut Canyon's rim trail are also leash-friendly. Many local campgrounds including Pine Grove and Dairy Springs allow leashed pets at no extra charge. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet rules and to ask about their favorite local trail, locals always have the best recs.
fs.usda.gov/r03/coconinoCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in the Mountainaire area?
Yes, RV delivery Mountainaire is one of the best features on RVezy, especially if it's your first time. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV straight to popular spots like Pine Grove Campground, Ashurst Lake, Bonito Campground near Sunset Crater, or even your Airbnb driveway in Kachina Village or Flagstaff. They'll level it, hook up power and water, run through the systems with you, and leave you ready to enjoy the pines. To find them, use the Delivery filter on the search page. Delivery fees typically scale with mileage from the host's location. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer if you're flying into Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG) and don't want to tow.
flagstaffaz.gov/2353/Pulliam-AirportHow does mileage work and how far can I drive on a Mountainaire RV trip?
Mileage on a Mountainaire RV trip is flexible: hosts set their own daily mileage allowance (commonly 100-150 free miles per day) and many offer RV rental with unlimited mileage packages, which is perfect for a multi-stop Arizona loop. From Mountainaire you're 30 miles to Sedona, 80 miles to the Grand Canyon South Rim, 145 miles to Petrified Forest National Park, 145 miles to Phoenix, and about 260 miles to Monument Valley. All easily reachable in a long weekend. Each listing displays the included miles and the cost per extra mile up front, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: tally your planned route before booking and filter for unlimited mileage if you're hitting more than two parks.
nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Mountainaire, AZ?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Mountainaire sit inside Coconino National Forest, most within 40 minutes: Pine Grove Campground near Upper Lake Mary (fits larger rigs and has flush toilets), Dairy Springs Campground on Mormon Lake (great for elk-watching at high elevation), Bonito Campground next to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, Cave Springs in Oak Creek Canyon (one of the most popular in the state), and Forked Pine on Ashurst Lake for fishing. Reserve on Recreation.gov up to 6 months in advance. Most forest campgrounds operate seasonally from late spring into fall, so plan accordingly for RV camping Mountainaire trips.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/1092When is the best time to rent an RV in Mountainaire?
Mountainaire sits at about 6,800 feet elevation, so its seasons look nothing like Phoenix. The sweet spot for an RV rental in Mountainaire is late May through early October, when daytime highs run 70-85°F and nights cool to a perfect-for-sleeping 40-55°F. July and August bring the North American Monsoon with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms, so plan hikes for mornings. September and early October deliver golden aspen on the San Francisco Peaks and thinner crowds. Winter (December-March) regularly sees snow and lows in the teens, but adventurous renters can score Arizona Snowbowl ski trips in a four-season RV. Pro tip: the Flagstaff Fourth of July parade and Pickin' in the Pines bluegrass festival in September fill local RVs fast, book 3+ months ahead.
weather.gov/fgz/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Mountainaire?
You'll do great. Mountainaire is one of the friendlier places in the country for a first time renting an RV: the area is served by wide, well-maintained I-17 and US-89, with gentle grades compared to mountain passes elsewhere out West. Your RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and the propane system, so you're never left guessing. Class B campervan rental Mountainaire options drive almost like an SUV and are perfect for nervous first-timers. Stick to daytime driving on your first day, take the I-17 exits slowly (some have tight ramps), and you'll be parked at Pine Grove before sunset. Pro tip: message your host with any pre-trip questions, they want you to succeed.
azdot.gov/adot-blog/driving-rv-arizona-tips-safe-tripWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every Mountainaire RV rental on RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance built into the protection package, covering tows, jump-starts, lockouts, flat tires, and fuel delivery, day or night. If you're boondocking on Forest Road 128 with patchy cell service, drive a few minutes back toward Lake Mary Road or I-17 to get bars, then call the roadside line. Your host is also a phone call away for RV-specific questions like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater. For anything bigger, RVezy's support team is reachable before, during, and after the trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you can rattle it off if you ever call for help.
azdps.gov/safety/highway-safetyCan I take my Mountainaire RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Yes to interstate, no to Mexico. Most RVezy hosts in Mountainaire happily allow travel into Utah (Zion is 270 miles, Bryce 320), New Mexico (Albuquerque 320 miles), Nevada (Las Vegas 250 miles), Colorado, and California, perfect for a Southwest national park loop. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend across the border. Popular RV road trip from Mountainaire routes include the Grand Canyon-Zion-Bryce triangle, Sedona to Monument Valley, and the Route 66 run east to Petrified Forest. Always confirm your route in the message thread with your host before booking. Pro tip: download offline maps for Utah's canyon country, cell service vanishes fast past Page, AZ.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect and how should I budget?
Plan smart and fuel won't bust your budget. Class B campervans get 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8-12 MPG, large Class A rigs run 6-9 MPG, and tow vehicles with travel trailers usually land around 10-14 MPG. Northern Arizona gas prices typically hover near or slightly above the state average; you'll find the cheapest fill-ups at the Maverik and Circle K stations along Beulah Boulevard and Milton Road in Flagstaff, just 10 minutes north of Mountainaire. Diesel is widely available at the Pilot and Love's truck stops on I-40. Pro tip: top up before heading south on I-17 toward Sedona or east toward the Grand Canyon, fuel inside the parks costs significantly more.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Mountainaire?
For summer weekends near Mountainaire, book your campground the moment the window opens. Coconino National Forest campgrounds (Pine Grove, Dairy Springs, Bonito, Cave Springs) release reservations on Recreation.gov exactly 6 months in advance and prime weekends sell out within minutes. State parks like Slide Rock and Dead Horse Ranch use AZStateParks.com with the same 6-month window. For July 4th, Labor Day, and Flagstaff Fourth of July weekend, set a calendar reminder for the release date. Walk-up sites are rare in summer but easier in shoulder months. Pro tip: midweek nights (Sunday-Thursday) at Ashurst Lake or Forked Pine often have last-minute openings even in peak season, ideal for a flexible motorhome rental Mountainaire getaway.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/1092What are driving conditions like around Mountainaire?
Driving around Mountainaire is straightforward, with a few high-country quirks to know. I-17 climbs steeply between Sedona and Flagstaff (a 2,500-foot ascent in 25 miles), so downshift descending into Camp Verde and watch your brake temperature. Summer afternoons bring monsoon thunderstorms with brief but heavy rain, lightning, and the occasional hail; pull over at a rest area if visibility drops. Winter brings snow and ice between November and April, especially on I-40 east toward Winslow and on Lake Mary Road. Elk are very active at dawn and dusk near Mormon Lake, take it slow. Pro tip: ADOT's az511.gov shows live road conditions and closures, bookmark it before heading out.
az511.gov/What amenities do local campgrounds offer, and where can I dump tanks or fill water?
Most Forest Service campgrounds near Mountainaire (Pine Grove, Dairy Springs, Bonito, Ashurst Lake) are dry sites with picnic tables, fire rings, vault or flush toilets, and potable water spigots, but no electric, water, or sewer hookups at the site. For full hookups try Flagstaff KOA Holiday on N. Highway 89, Woody Mountain Campground on Route 66, or Black Bart's RV Park near I-40 exit 198. Public dump stations are available at the Flagstaff KOA (small fee), Little America Flagstaff, and the Cinder Hills OHV area. Pro tip: fill fresh water before leaving Flagstaff because high-elevation forest spigots are sometimes shut off after the first freeze in October.
fs.usda.gov/r03/coconino/recreation/camping-cabinsWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Mountainaire?
You'll feel right at home. A typical RVezy rental in Mountainaire comes fully outfitted for the high country: queen or king bed, fresh linens (many hosts include them), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and cookware, a wet or dry bathroom with hot shower, dinette that converts to extra sleeping, furnace and air conditioning (essential, Mountainaire nights drop to 40°F even in July), and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Larger Class A and C motorhomes often add a generator, TV, and outdoor speakers, while modern campervans frequently include solar and a Wi-Fi booster, helpful since cell signal fades fast on Lake Mary Road. Each listing's amenity list shows exactly what's included. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count to match your group size precisely.
fs.usda.gov/visit/coconino-national-forestWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect from hosts in Mountainaire?
Local hosts offer plenty of ways to customize your Mountainaire RV trip. Popular add-ons include bedding and towel packages ($25-$60), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, propane fire pits (perfect for Flagstaff's burn-ban summers), Starlink Wi-Fi, generators, bike racks, and even kayak or paddleboard rentals for Upper Lake Mary. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Mountainaire, Kachina Village, or Flagstaff, with delivery available to FLG airport, Sedona, or your trailhead for an added fee. Mileage allowances and pet fees are spelled out clearly on each listing. Pro tip: ask the host about a propane fire pit; Coconino County frequently has open-flame restrictions in summer, and these are usually allowed when wood fires aren't.
dffm.az.gov/fire/restrictionsHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: book and pay right inside RVezy with a credit or debit card, no cash or e-transfers needed. A security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, with the amount set by the host and clearly shown on the listing before you confirm. As long as you return the RV in the same condition with the agreed fuel and tank levels, the hold is released after dropoff. The protection plan you chose at checkout helps cover most accidental damage. Do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, it is the easiest way to protect your deposit and avoid disputes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Mountainaire in winter, and how do I handle the cold?
Yes, winter RV rental Mountainaire trips are absolutely doable and can be magical, think snow-dusted ponderosa pines and night skies at one of the world's first International Dark Sky Cities. Filter for four-season or winterized RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and a reliable furnace; many local hosts list these specifically for Arizona Snowbowl ski trips. Plan to stay at a park with shore power like Flagstaff KOA or J&H RV Park, since most Forest Service campgrounds close in winter. Carry tire chains in case of snowstorms on I-17 and I-40, and add RV antifreeze to the gray and black tanks. Snowbowl's parking lot fills early on powder days, so arrive before 9 AM.
