Camping near Munds Park, Arizona
Munds Park sits at roughly 6,500 feet in the Coconino National Forest, about 14 to 21 miles south of Flagstaff off Interstate 17 and roughly two hours north of Phoenix. The pine-forest setting runs well cooler than the low deserts in summer, which is why the town fills with RV travelers from spring through early fall.
Munds Park RV Resort is the closest full-service option, with 30/50-amp and premium 125-amp hookup sites, a heated pool and spa, laundry, a general store, and direct trail access into the surrounding forest. For red-rock proximity, Rancho Sedona RV Park and Oak Creek Mobilodge sit down in Sedona along Oak Creek. To the southeast, Mormon Lake Lodge RV Park and Campground offers 74 full-hookup, pull-through sites near shallow, often-dry Mormon Lake.
Fort Tuthill County Campground, near Flagstaff, adds a public-lands option with tent and RV sites under tall ponderosa pines. Together these parks make Munds Park a workable basecamp for Sedona, Flagstaff, and northern Arizona day trips.
Things to do around Munds Park
The Munds Park trail network surrounds the town with routes used for hiking, mountain biking, and ATVs, and the Arizona Trail passes between Munds Park and Mormon Lake. Lake O'Dell sits inside the community, and Upper Lake Mary, a short drive up Lake Mary Road, supports fishing, boating, and water skiing. Pinewood Country Club runs an 18-hole course through the warm months.
Sedona is about 30 to 40 minutes south via Oak Creek Canyon, with red-rock hikes at Cathedral Rock and Bell Rock. Flagstaff, roughly 14 miles north, adds downtown dining, Lowell Observatory, and the San Francisco Peaks. Mormon Lake Lodge runs horseback riding, kayaking, and a Steakhouse and Saloon on-site.

The core RV season runs late spring through early fall. Munds Park RV Resort operates April 1 through October 31, and Fort Tuthill County Campground opens in early May and runs into the fall. Mormon Lake Lodge stays open year-round, though horseback riding and other activities vary with the weather.
Summer daytime highs typically sit in the low-to-mid 80s with cool nights in the upper 50s to low 60s, occasionally reaching 90. Monsoon storms roll in most afternoons from July through September, bringing brief downpours, lightning, and localized impacts on forest service roads. Fire restrictions are common during dry stretches, sometimes including full bans on open flames.
Winter brings cold, snowy conditions with lows in the teens or single digits and average snowfall well over five feet on higher ground. Many area RV parks close or run weather-dependent operations, and higher forest roads may be impassable. September and early October offer a favorable combination of cool nights, lighter crowds, and stable weather.

How to book campgrounds near Munds Park
Private parks handle their own reservations. Munds Park RV Resort takes daily, weekly, and monthly bookings directly through its office for stays under 28 days, plus seasonal spots. Mormon Lake Lodge RV Park and Campground and Rancho Sedona RV Park book through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and holidays fill early, so reserve well in advance.
Fort Tuthill County Campground is managed by Coconino County Parks and Recreation and booked through the county's online reservation portal, powered by Campspot. Reservations must be made at least three days ahead of arrival; otherwise, arrivals are handled as first-come, first-served. Coconino National Forest campgrounds and cabins are booked through Recreation.gov.
What to expect on-site
Elevation is the dominant factor. At close to 6,500 feet, nights stay cool even in July, so pack layers regardless of daytime highs. Full hookups, laundry, and dump stations are standard at Munds Park RV Resort and Mormon Lake Lodge. Fort Tuthill has 8 RV sites with water and sewer, but no electric hookups and no shower buildings; restrooms are portable toilets, and water is drawn from spigots.
Sites at Mormon Lake Lodge cluster tightly, which can affect slide-outs and awnings on larger rigs. Cell service is inconsistent around Mormon Lake and on nearby forest roads. Flagstaff is a designated Dark Sky community, so expect strong stargazing and limited outdoor lighting at nearby parks.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Munds Park, AZ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Munds Park, AZ?
An RV rental in Munds Park is one of the most affordable ways to enjoy northern Arizona's cool pines. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $95 to $150 per night, campervans run $125 to $200, and Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275 nightly. Because Munds Park sits at roughly 6,500 feet just off Interstate 17, hosts here cater to summer visitors escaping the Phoenix heat, so booking midweek or in May and September often unlocks the best rates. For a cheap RV rental in Munds Park, filter by travel trailers with delivery included to save fuel on the climb up I-17.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Munds%20Park%2C%20ArizonaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Munds Park, Arizona?
Good news: Arizona does not require a special license or commercial driver's license (CDL) to drive a personal-use RV, so your regular driver's license is all you need. To rent an RV in Munds Park you'll be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform in just a few minutes. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before flying in, usually under $25. With paperwork sorted, you're free to enjoy the cool pines and the Coconino National Forest right outside your door.
azdot.gov/motor-vehicles/driver-services/driver-license-informationIs RV insurance and roadside assistance included on my Munds Park RV rental?
You're covered: every motorhome rental in Munds Park booked through RVezy includes a protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance. During checkout you'll choose the protection level that fits your trip, with options that cover most damage to the vehicle for added peace of mind on forest roads like Schnebly Hill or Lake Mary Road. The protection plan plus roadside support means a flat tire near Mormon Lake or a dead battery at the trailhead is a quick phone call, not a ruined vacation.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is the cancellation policy if my Munds Park RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a clear, standardized cancellation policy that includes a money-back grace period right after you reserve, so you can lock in a summer weekend at the cool 6,500-foot elevation with confidence. Refund eligibility after that window depends on how far in advance you cancel. Full details are shown during checkout and in your RVezy account. Pro tip: if smoke from a Coconino National Forest fire or a winter storm on I-17 affects your trip, message RVezy support early so they can help find the best path forward.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Munds Park?
Absolutely, Munds Park is a dog lover's dream. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find a pet-friendly RV rental in Munds Park, and many hosts welcome dogs with a small cleaning fee. The surrounding Coconino National Forest allows leashed pets on nearly every trail, including the Munds Park Trail System loops and the Arizona Trail segment toward Mormon Lake. Pro tip: pack a tick check routine since elk and deer share these woods, and bring a long line for relaxed evenings at your campsite.
fs.usda.gov/coconinoCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Munds Park?
Yes, RV delivery in Munds Park is often the easiest way to start your trip. Many RVezy hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to Munds Park RV Resort, Pinegrove Campground, or a dispersed site along nearby forest roads, then set up hookups, level it, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter when searching, message the host with your campground name and arrival date, and confirm the delivery fee, which usually scales by distance from Phoenix or Flagstaff. This is great for first-time renters because you skip the I-17 climb and arrive to a ready-to-camp setup.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Munds%20Park%2C%20ArizonaHow far can I drive, and are there RV rentals with unlimited mileage in Munds Park?
You've got plenty of road ahead. Many RVezy hosts in Munds Park include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage as an add-on for longer Arizona loops. From Munds Park you're about 20 miles to Flagstaff, roughly 45 miles to Sedona via I-17 and SR-179, around 80 miles to Williams, and approximately 100 miles to the Grand Canyon South Rim. Phoenix sits about 125 miles south. Pro tip: if you're planning a Grand Canyon and Monument Valley loop, message the host before booking to bundle unlimited miles into your nightly rate, which is often cheaper than paying per mile.
nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Munds Park for an RV trip?
You're spoiled for choice. Munds Park RV Resort, right in town, offers full-hookup sites under tall pines with a pool, dog park, and dump station, typically open spring through fall. Pinegrove Campground in the Coconino National Forest along Lake Mary Road is a Forest Service favorite that accommodates larger RVs. Dairy Springs and Double Springs Campgrounds at Mormon Lake sit in cool ponderosa forest with vault toilets and potable water. For free RV camping near Munds Park, dispersed sites along nearby forest roads allow stays up to 14 days. Reserve developed sites on Recreation.gov three to six months ahead for summer weekends.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/1092When is the best time to visit Munds Park in an RV?
Munds Park's sweet spot runs from late May through early October, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable mid-70s to mid-80s and nights drop into the 40s and 50s, generally 20 to 30 degrees cooler than Phoenix. July and August bring lively afternoon monsoon storms, so plan hikes for the morning. September is the local insider pick: warm days, crisp nights, golden aspens on the San Francisco Peaks, and thinner crowds. Winter is snowy at this elevation, so most RV parks close roughly November through March. Book July weekends at least three months ahead because the resort fills up fast.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=34.9410&lon=-111.64153I'm first time renting an RV. Will I be okay driving in Munds Park?
You'll do great, and Munds Park is one of Arizona's friendlier first-timer destinations. Your RVezy host gives a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, hookups, leveling, and slide-outs, and you can text them anytime during the trip. The drive in is straightforward: Munds Park sits right off Interstate 17 at exit 322, with a gas station, paved access, and a forgiving layout at Munds Park RV Resort. If the climb from Phoenix sounds intimidating, choose delivery and skip the highway entirely. Pro tip: record your walkthrough on your phone so you can rewatch how the awning retracts or the water heater turns on.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my Munds Park RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing, which matters on remote stretches of Lake Mary Road or nearby forest roads. Your host is also just a text away and knows the RV inside and out. Cell coverage is generally solid in Munds Park itself but weaker once you're deep in the Coconino National Forest. Pro tip: snap a photo of your VIN, license plate, and the host's number before you leave the driveway, so any call to roadside is fast and stress-free.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are the best RV road trips from Munds Park?
Munds Park is a great launchpad for a northern Arizona RV road trip. From here you can drive about an hour to Sedona's red rocks via I-17 and SR-179, around two hours to the Grand Canyon South Rim, roughly two and a half hours to Petrified Forest National Park along I-40, and about four hours to Monument Valley on the Navajo Nation. Shoulder-season loops to Bryce Canyon, Utah are also popular. Travel to Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance coverage limits, but the entire American Southwest is open road. Pro tip: ask your host about one-way trips to Las Vegas or Phoenix; some will allow it for an additional fee.
nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for a Munds Park RV trip?
Budgeting is easy once you know the numbers. Expect about 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class C motorhome, 10 to 14 for a campervan, and 12 to 16 for a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Arizona gas prices in the Flagstaff and Munds Park area typically run slightly above the state average due to elevation, so fuel up cheaper in Camp Verde (exit 287) on your way north. The Maverik at exit 322 in Munds Park is convenient but pricier. For a 500-mile loop hitting Sedona, the Grand Canyon, and back, plan roughly $200 to $300 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: GasBuddy is your friend on I-17.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Munds Park?
Book early and you'll thank yourself. For summer weekends from June through August, reserve Coconino National Forest campgrounds like Pinegrove, Dairy Springs, and Ashurst Lake on Recreation.gov up to six months out, the day the rolling booking window opens. Munds Park RV Resort fills its full-hookup sites two to four months ahead for July and Labor Day weekend. Dispersed sites along nearby forest roads are first-come, first-served with a 14-day stay limit, so arrive by Thursday afternoon for weekend spots. Pro tip: midweek arrivals from Sunday through Wednesday almost always have availability, even in peak summer, and the trails are blissfully quiet.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/1092What are local driving conditions like around Munds Park?
Driving here is mostly easy, with a few smart things to know. Interstate 17 between Phoenix and Munds Park climbs from roughly 1,100 feet to about 6,500 feet over 125 miles, so use lower gears on the descent at Sunset Point and watch coolant temps on the climb. Inside Munds Park, paved streets are calm and RV-friendly. Forest roads like Schnebly Hill Road and FR 240 are dirt and best for smaller rigs, especially after monsoon rain when ruts deepen. Watch for elk at dawn and dusk. Pro tip: check ADOT's az511 site for I-17 conditions, which can include closures during winter snowstorms.
az511.gov/What hookups and amenities will I find at Munds Park campgrounds?
You'll have great options for every camping style. Munds Park RV Resort offers full 30/50-amp hookups (water, sewer, electric) plus some newer 125-amp premium sites, a dump station, potable water fill, propane refills, laundry, free WiFi, a heated pool, and a general store. Forest Service campgrounds like Pinegrove and Dairy Springs are dry camping only, meaning vault toilets and potable water spigots, but no hookups, so you'll run on the RV's battery and freshwater tank. The nearest public dump station outside the resort is at Fort Tuthill County Park, 14 miles north toward Flagstaff. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving Munds Park if you're heading to dispersed sites.
fs.usda.gov/r03/coconino/recreation/camping-cabinsWhat features are typical inside RVs available for RV camping in Munds Park?
You'll be comfortable. Most Munds Park RV rentals on RVezy sleep four to eight people and come with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, roof air conditioning, propane furnace (a must at 6,500 feet, where summer nights can dip into the 40s), and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and a built-in generator for dry camping. Pro tip: filter for RVs with a generator if you're planning dispersed camping on nearby forest roads where there are no hookups.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Munds%20Park%2C%20ArizonaWhat add-ons and pickup logistics should I expect with a campervan rental in Munds Park?
Customizing your trip is part of the fun. Popular add-ons for a campervan rental in Munds Park include linens and towel packages, camp chairs and outdoor tables, generators, portable BBQs, bike racks, and kid or pet kits. Mileage policies typically allow 100 to 150 free miles per night with a per-mile fee after that, or you can buy unlimited mileage upfront. Pickup is usually at the host's home (often in Flagstaff, Phoenix, or right in Munds Park), with delivery to Munds Park RV Resort available from many hosts. Pro tip: ask about an early-pickup add-on so you can settle in before the afternoon campground check-in rush.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Munds%20Park%2C%20ArizonaHow does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Munds Park?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You'll pay your full rental balance through the RVezy platform, never directly to the host, using a supported credit card or payment method. Most hosts place a refundable security deposit hold on your card a few days before pickup, which is released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, typically within 7 days of return. To avoid deposit hiccups, do a thorough walkthrough video at pickup and dropoff, return with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if your agreement requires it. Pro tip: keep all receipts in the RVezy app messaging thread for a clean record.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I do winter RV camping in Munds Park, and how do I prep for cold weather?
Winter in Munds Park is an underrated adventure if you're prepared. The town receives significant snowfall at 6,500 feet with overnight lows often in the teens, so most RV parks (including Munds Park RV Resort) close roughly November through March. For winter trips, filter RVezy for four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore power capability, then base out of year-round options near Flagstaff. You'll be about 30 minutes from Arizona Snowbowl skiing and the Wing Mountain Snow Play area. Pro tip: keep the freshwater tank partially full, use the internal pump instead of hookups, and pack tire chains since ADOT may require them on I-17 during winter storms.
