Campgrounds near New River, Arizona
New River sits along Interstate 17 in the northern Sonoran Desert, about 30 miles north of downtown Phoenix and a short drive from Lake Pleasant. The area functions as a staging point for RV travelers heading between Phoenix, Sedona, Flagstaff, and the Bradshaw Mountains, and it offers a mix of full-hookup resorts, a large regional park, and dispersed public land camping.
Close-in options include Shangri-La Ranch, a clothing-optional property with pools and a hot tub, and Pioneer RV Resort, an age-restricted 55+ community along the Black Canyon corridor. Families and boaters gravitate to Pleasant Harbor RV Resort in nearby Peoria, which offers full hookup sites with 30/50 amp service and big rig access on the shore of Lake Pleasant.
North of town, Black Canyon Campground is a full-service property located right off Interstate 17 in Black Canyon City at the Rock Springs exit and offers large sites with 50-amp full hookups, while Black Canyon Ranch RV Resort provides 107 sites with full hookups for RVs and tent camping areas.
Things to do around New River
Lake Pleasant is the anchor attraction. The reservoir has 114 miles of shoreline and a 10-lane boat ramp with parking for 200 vehicles, and sportfishing is popular for white bass, largemouth bass, striped bass, channel catfish, and crappie; a state-issued license is required. Pleasant Harbor RV Resort provides direct access to the marina, boat rentals, and swim areas.
On shore, the Black Canyon National Recreation Trail runs for roughly 80 miles along the west side of I-17 and is popular for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Nearby Agua Fria National Monument offers additional hiking and backcountry exploration. Cave Creek Regional Park, Pioneer Living History Village, and day trips to Sedona and Prescott are all within easy range for RV travelers based in New River.

New River follows the low-desert calendar of the Phoenix metro area, which flips the usual North American camping seasons. Cool-weather months from October through April are the primary camping season, when daytime highs are comfortable and overnight lows rarely freeze. RV resorts fill quickly with snowbirds during January, February, and March, and monthly stays often need to be booked well in advance.
Spring is the busiest stretch on the water and the trails. Wildflowers bloom in the Agua Fria and Sonoran foothills after wet winters, and weekends at Lake Pleasant book out well ahead. October through April is the ideal window for desert camping, with February through April and September through October offering the most comfortable conditions around the lake.
Summer brings triple-digit heat and the North American Monsoon, which delivers afternoon thunderstorms, flash flooding in washes, and occasional dust storms from July into September. Many travelers head to higher country in Prescott or Flagstaff during those months.

How to book a site near New River
Public sites at Lake Pleasant are managed by Maricopa County Parks and Recreation. The department's facilities reservations website allows visitors to reserve a camping spot up to six months in advance. Lake Pleasant Regional Park offers 148 sites for RV and tent camping within the campgrounds, spread across the Roadrunner and Desert Tortoise areas. Each developed site has water and electricity, and a dump station, covered ramada, picnic table, barbecue grill, and fire ring, and the Desert Tortoise area offers many waterfront sites while Roadrunner sits a little farther from the lake.
Private resorts, including Pleasant Harbor RV Resort, Pioneer RV Resort, Black Canyon Campground, and Black Canyon Ranch RV Resort, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Winter and spring holiday weekends should be locked in two to three months out; snowbird stays of a month or longer often need to be arranged the prior summer.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around New River is classic Sonoran Desert: saguaro-studded ridges, dry washes, and creosote flats at roughly 1,500 to 2,500 feet of elevation. Expect gravel or paved pads at private resorts and a mix of pavement and hard-packed dirt at public campgrounds. Sites at Lake Pleasant are paved and fairly level, with open sky and few trees, and cell coverage is generally reliable along the I-17 corridor.
Big rigs are well accommodated on the main routes, but backroads into dispersed camping on BLM and State Trust land can require high clearance. Wildlife includes coyotes, javelina, quail, wild burros around the lake, and rattlesnakes in warm months, so pet owners should keep dogs leashed. Fire restrictions are common from late spring through the monsoon, so check current status with the managing agency before lighting any campfire.

azdot.gov/adot-news/i-17-improvement-projectWhere are the best campgrounds near New River, AZ?

Lake Pleasant Regional Park is the standout, with Desert Tortoise and Roadrunner Campgrounds offering electric and water hookups, a dump station, ramadas, and lake views. Black Canyon Campground a short drive north on I-17 is a quieter, budget-friendly option. For resort-style RV camping near New River, Pleasant Harbor RV Resort in Peoria offers pools and marina access. Pro tip: check current rates and reserve early on the Maricopa County Parks site, since prime weekends fill quickly from October through April.
maricopacountyparks.net/park-locator/lake-pleasant-regional-park/camping/When is the best time to rent an RV in New River, AZ?
The sweet spot for New River RV camping is October through April, when daytime highs typically sit in the 65 to 80F range and nights cool into the 40s and 50s, ideal for campfires under huge desert skies. February and March are peak season thanks to warm sunshine, wildflowers, and spring training baseball nearby. Summer (June through August) regularly tops 100F, so if you visit then, plan early-morning hikes and rent a motorhome with strong air conditioning and generator capability. Pro tip: late September is an insider favorite. Monsoon storms are winding down, crowds thin out, and rates to rent an RV in New River often drop noticeably.
weather.gov/psr/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and New River is actually one of the easiest places in the country to learn. Most RVezy hosts here provide a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, propane, slide-outs, and the dump station, so you're never left guessing. The roads around New River are wide, well-paved, and gently sloped, with I-17 offering long straight stretches to build confidence before you tackle scenic routes. If parallel parking a motorhome sounds intimidating, choose delivery and you'll skip driving altogether until you're ready. Pro tip for first time renting an RV travelers: start with a Class C or travel trailer under 25 feet. They drive much like a large truck and fit easily into any campsite.
azdot.gov/adot-blog/driving-safety-tipsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are covered, day or night. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Carefree Highway or a dead battery at Lake Pleasant means one phone call and help is dispatched. New River sits in a well-serviced corridor with major service providers in nearby Anthem, Phoenix, and Black Canyon City, so response times are typically quick. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app for questions about quirks specific to that RV. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the generator, water pump, and propane switches at pickup so you can troubleshoot small things over the phone in seconds.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take an RV rental from New River across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Absolutely for the U.S. and likely yes for Canada, but Mexico is off the table. Your RV rental in Arizona is welcome across all 50 states, so popular RV road trips from New River include Utah's Mighty 5 national parks, Las Vegas (about 4 hours), and California's Joshua Tree (around 5 hours). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance details, so message the host directly before booking if Banff or Jasper is on your bucket list. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because protection coverage doesn't extend south of the border. Pro tip: the Grand Circle loop through Sedona, Page, Zion, and Bryce is a 7-day stunner.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and what does gas cost in the New River area?
Plan smart and fuel won't break your budget. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs about 6 to 10, campervans 15 to 20, and a truck towing a travel trailer roughly 10 to 14. Arizona gas prices generally sit below the national average, and you'll find competitive stations at the Anthem exit (Exit 229) and in Black Canyon City just north on I-17. For a typical 4-day New River RV trip covering 400 miles, budget roughly $150 to $250 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Anthem Costco if you're a member. It's consistently 20 to 40 cents cheaper than highway prices on the way to Sedona or Flagstaff.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near New River?
Book early and you'll lock in the best spots, especially at Lake Pleasant. Maricopa County Parks opens its online reservation system six months in advance, and Desert Tortoise and Roadrunner Campgrounds fill up fast for weekends from October through April. For peak holiday weekends (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break), aim for the six-month window the day it opens. Mid-week stays and shoulder-season visits in May or September are far easier walk-ups. State parks like Lost Dutchman (under 90 minutes away) use the AZStateParks.com reservation portal. Pro tip: if your dates show booked, set up a cancellation alert. Maricopa County campsites turn over daily, and great shoreline sites pop back open all the time.
maricopacountyparks.net/things-to-do/activity/campsites--group-campsites/What are driving conditions like around New River?
You'll find some of the easiest RV driving in the Southwest right here. New River sits along Interstate 17 at about 2,000 feet elevation, with wide lanes, generous shoulders, and clear sightlines, ideal for first-timers. The main thing to know: the climb north of New River up to Sunset Point and Black Canyon City includes a sustained grade where you'll want to drop a gear, and afternoon summer monsoon storms (July to mid-September) can bring brief but intense downpours and dust storms called haboobs. Pull over safely if visibility drops. Pro tip: avoid driving I-17 southbound on Sunday evenings, when weekend traffic returning to Phoenix backs up significantly near the Anthem and Carefree Highway exits.
az511.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near New River?
Most campgrounds near New River are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. At Lake Pleasant Regional Park, developed sites include water, electricity (30 amp), a dump station on-site, covered ramadas (huge bonus in desert sun), picnic tables, BBQ grills, and fire rings, plus restrooms and hot showers. Cave Creek Regional Park offers similar amenities with full hookups including sewer. Pleasant Harbor RV Resort in Peoria adds 30/50 amp service, a pool, and a marina. Need to dump or fill water elsewhere? Black Canyon City and the Pilot Travel Center off I-17 Exit 242 both have dump stations. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot freshwater hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter to handle any site configuration you encounter.
maricopacountyparks.net/park-locator/lake-pleasant-regional-park/camping/What features and amenities come standard in New River RV rentals?
You will be impressed by how loaded these rigs are. Most RVs listed in New River come with full kitchens (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, real beds with linens often included, roof air conditioning (a must in Arizona), a furnace for chilly desert nights, and seatbelts for all passengers. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes typically include generators, outdoor awnings, and sometimes outdoor entertainment systems. Many hosts offer Wi-Fi hotspots, satellite TV, solar panels, and bike racks as add-ons. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count to find the right fit for a family RV trip to New River. A Class C that sleeps 6 to 8 is the sweet spot for most road-trippers heading to Sedona or the Grand Canyon.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20River%2C%20ArizonaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
You've got great flexibility here. Popular add-ons from New River hosts include camp chairs and tables, bedding and kitchen kits, generators, propane fills, paddleboards (perfect for Lake Pleasant), pet packages, and Starlink or Wi-Fi hotspots. Pickup and dropoff usually happen at the host's home in New River, Anthem, Desert Hills, or nearby Phoenix, but many offer delivery to your campground or even directly to Phoenix Sky Harbor for fly-in travelers (a roughly 35-mile drive). Mileage policies vary: some hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day, while others offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for long road trips. Pro tip: always message the host before booking to confirm pickup time windows, especially if you're flying in.
skyharbor.com/parking-transportation/transportationHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully online, no cash handoffs at pickup. You pay through the secure RVezy platform when you book, and most hosts require a refundable security deposit that is authorized on your credit card before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. The deposit is separate from your booking payment and covers things like accidental damage beyond what the protection plan handles. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video with your host at pickup and dropoff. It takes 5 minutes and protects everyone, so your campervan rental in New River experience ends with a smooth deposit return and a five-star review.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I manage the desert heat in summer when renting an RV in New River?
Heat is real here, but easy to manage with a smart plan. Summer highs in New River regularly hit 100 to 105°F from June through August, so book an RV with strong roof air conditioning and confirm with the host that the unit cycles well on shore power (most campgrounds offer 30 amp service that handles one AC unit comfortably). Drive early mornings or evenings, keep awnings retracted in afternoon winds, and head higher up I-17 toward Flagstaff (7,000 feet, 30 degrees cooler) or Prescott when the valley sizzles. Pro tip: shoulder seasons (October, November, March, April) are the smart-money move. Rates drop, weather is perfect, and Lake Pleasant water levels are usually high enough for shoreline camping.
