Campgrounds near Oro Valley
Oro Valley sits at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains just north of Tucson, and its RV camping options split cleanly into two categories: a public state park with hookup sites right against the foothills, and a cluster of private RV parks along the Tucson corridor a short drive south. Catalina State Park sits at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains, with 5,500 acres of foothills, canyons and streams, more than 150 species of birds, and miles of trails that wind into the Coronado National Forest at elevations near 3,000 feet, all located within minutes of the Tucson metropolitan area.
The closest campground to town is Catalina State Park, which functions as the main outdoor anchor for the area. Private options nearby include South Forty RV Ranch/Park, Wishing Well RV Park, Prince Of Tucson RV Park, and Tra-Tel Tucson RV Park, all clustered south of Oro Valley in the greater Tucson area and typically geared to longer stays with full hookups.
Demand for Arizona State Parks camping intensifies during winter months due to snowbird travel, and Catalina is one of the highest-demand sites, so RV renters planning a winter trip should treat this as a high-demand destination and book early.
Things to do near Oro Valley
Hiking and wildlife viewing are the main draws. The park includes over 5,500 acres of foothills and canyons within the Santa Catalina Mountains, with miles of hiking, biking, birding and equestrian trails that extend into the Coronado National Forest, along with picnicking, photography, stargazing and wildlife viewing. The Romero Canyon Trail and the Sutherland Trail offer longer, more strenuous hikes through desert terrain and riparian canyons, and both climb to cool natural pools and connect with other Coronado National Forest trails that continue on to Mount Lemmon at the top of the Catalinas.
Visitors who spend the night in Catalina State Park are all but guaranteed to see coyotes, javelinas and jackrabbits, among other prolific desert critters. For easier outings with kids, the Romero Ruins interpretive loop and the short nature trail work well. Oro Valley itself has paved bike paths, shopping, and restaurants a few minutes from the park entrance, which makes resupply straightforward for RV travellers.

The Sonoran Desert around Oro Valley has a long, mild camping season from October through April, followed by a hot, stormy summer. Fall, winter, and spring days are generally in the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit, and on average about twelve nights each winter drop to freezing. This is peak snowbird season, and Catalina State Park sites are notoriously hard to reserve in the cooler months.
Summer is dominated by heat and the North American monsoon. Tucson has a subtropical semi-desert climate with very hot summers, and the area lies within the North American monsoon zone, which brings some rainfall in summer. Thunderstorms are common from July through September, and flash flooding in washes is a real concern.
The Santa Catalina Mountains and the park were affected by the Bighorn Fire, which burned nearly 120,000 acres after a June lightning strike and was contained on July 23, 2020, and some deeper trails may still show damage or closures, so check current trail status before setting out. Fall reopens as temperatures drop and demand ramps back up.

How to book campgrounds near Oro Valley
Catalina State Park is reserved through the Arizona State Parks system. Campsite reservations are available online or by calling the Arizona State Parks Reservation Desk at 1-877-MY PARKS (697-2757), staffed seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MST. Reservations can be made up to 365 days in advance and a minimum of one day in advance, and the winter window fills up fast, so plan to book as soon as your dates open.
Maximum stay is 14 nights within a 30-day period per park, per household, at the discretion of the park manager. Check-in time is 2 p.m. and check-out time is 12 noon on the scheduled departure date.
Private parks like South Forty RV Ranch/Park, Wishing Well RV Park, Prince Of Tucson RV Park, and Tra-Tel Tucson RV Park are booked directly with each operator by phone or website, and many favor weekly or monthly stays in winter.
What to expect at Oro Valley campgrounds
At Catalina State Park, expect paved, well-defined RV sites with mountain views and limited natural shade. Campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, trash collection and two RV dump stations, with sites in loops A and B offering water and electric hookups (20/30/50 amp), a paved parking spur up to 60 feet, a table, fire ring and BBQ pedestal. Wood fires are prohibited in the A and B loops but are permitted at the equestrian and overnight group areas.
The restroom and shower building in Campground A is closed for replacement, with portable restrooms placed around the loop and shower buildings in Campground B and the group areas remaining available.
Cell service is generally usable, though Wi-Fi is unreliable. Private parks in the Tucson corridor lean toward paved pull-throughs, full hookups, laundry, and pools, with a more suburban feel than the desert-park setting.

To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Oro Valley, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see plenty of options from local hosts. Once you're set, your pup will love Honey Bee Canyon Park's shaded washes, the leash-friendly trails at Catalina State Park, and the off-leash dog park at James D. Kriegh Park right in town. Many hosts charge a small pet fee (typically $25 to $75) to cover extra cleaning. Pro tip: pack booties for summer, because desert pavement can hit 140°F in July.

Yes, RV delivery in Oro Valley is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for travelers flying into Tucson International Airport about 30 minutes south. They will level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system so you are not guessing how to light the propane stove. Delivery fees typically run a few dollars per mile from the host location. Bundle delivery with a stocked-fridge add-on for a true turn-key Oro Valley RV trip.

Rincon Country West RV Resort is a full-hookup snowbird favorite with a pool. Catalina Spa & RV Resort sits right in Oro Valley with hot mineral pools. azstateparks.com/catalina/camping/campgroundWhen is the best time to visit Oro Valley in an RV?
Oro Valley shines from October through April, when daytime highs hover between 65°F and 85°F and nights cool to a crisp 40°F to 55°F, making it perfect RV weather. This is peak snowbird season, so book your RV rental in Arizona several months ahead. May and September are great shoulder months with fewer crowds. Summer (June through August) brings 100°F-plus afternoons and dramatic monsoon thunderstorms, but early mornings are still beautiful, and you can escape to Mount Lemmon where it's 20°F cooler. Pro tip: February is magical here, with wildflower blooms across the Sonoran Desert and the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show drawing visitors from around the world.
weather.gov/twc/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Oro Valley?
You'll do great, and Oro Valley is one of the friendliest places in Arizona for a first time renting an RV. Roads like Oracle Road (SR-77) and Tangerine Road are wide, well-maintained, and far less stressful than driving in downtown Tucson or Phoenix. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on orientation at pickup, showing you how to operate slide-outs, hookups, the generator, and the awning. You can also message your host anytime during the trip with questions. Pro tip: do your first practice drive on the loop through Rancho Vistoso Boulevard, which has gentle curves and minimal traffic, before tackling the climb up to Mount Lemmon.
azdot.gov/adot-news/safe-driving-tipsWhat happens if something goes wrong with my RV during the trip?
You are never stranded. Every RV rental in Oro Valley, AZ booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. The RVezy support team is also a quick call or message away before, during, and after your trip. Your host is typically the fastest first contact for minor questions like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater. Snap photos of every panel and switch during your walkthrough so you can reference them later if something stumps you on the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Oro Valley RV rental to Mexico or other states?
Cross-state road trips are absolutely on the table. Most hosts welcome travel into New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, and California, which opens up incredible options like Zion National Park about 8 hours north or White Sands roughly 5 hours east. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage stops at the US border, even though Nogales is only about 90 minutes south. Always confirm out-of-state plans with your host through the RVezy message system before booking. An RV road trip from Oro Valley up through Sedona and the Grand Canyon is the classic Arizona loop, comfortably doable in 7 to 10 days.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Oro Valley RV trip?
Arizona gas prices are usually a bit cheaper than the national average, which is great news for your fuel budget. As of recent averages, regular gas in the Tucson metro runs around $3.30 to $3.80 per gallon. Travel trailers (towed behind your own truck or SUV) typically get 10 to 14 MPG combined, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs land between 6 and 10 MPG. For a 300-mile round trip from Oro Valley to Sedona and back, budget roughly $90 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at Costco or Sam's Club on Tucson's north side before heading out, since prices climb the further you get from the metro.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Oro Valley?
Book early and you'll thank yourself. Catalina State Park, the crown jewel just minutes from Oro Valley, accepts reservations up to 6 months in advance through the Arizona State Parks system, and weekend sites from November through March often sell out the day they open. Federal campgrounds like Rose Canyon on Mount Lemmon open bookings 6 months ahead on Recreation.gov. Private RV resorts like Rincon Country West fill up months in advance for snowbird season. For summer trips, you can often grab sites just a week or two out. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 6 months before your target date and book at 8:00 AM Arizona time for the best chance.
azstateparks.com/reserveWhat are the driving conditions like around Oro Valley?
Oro Valley is one of the easier Arizona cities to drive an RV in. Roads are wide, traffic is light compared to Tucson or Phoenix, and the terrain is mostly gentle desert valley with the Santa Catalina Mountains as a stunning backdrop. The main route up Mount Lemmon (Catalina Highway) is paved and well-engineered but does climb 6,000 feet over 27 miles with tight switchbacks, so go slow and use lower gears. Monsoon storms from July to mid-September can bring sudden flash floods, especially at washes marked with Do Not Enter When Flooded signs. Pro tip: avoid the Oracle Road and Ina Road interchange during 4 to 6 PM weekday rush hour, when traffic backs up heading toward I-10.
az511.gov/What amenities do campgrounds near Oro Valley offer?
You'll find a great range of campground amenities around Oro Valley. Catalina State Park offers 50-amp and 30-amp electric plus water hookups, hot showers, a dump station, and potable water fill-up. Rincon Country West and Catalina Spa & RV Resort provide full hookups including sewer, Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. Gilbert Ray Campground in Tucson Mountain Park has 30-amp electric only (no water hookups), but there's a dump station and water fill at the entrance. The free Oro Valley Dump Station at the Public Works yard is a handy resource. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before heading to Mount Lemmon, since several campgrounds up there (like Rose Canyon) are dry sites with no hookups.
azstateparks.com/catalina/things-to-do/amenitiesWhat's included inside a typical Oro Valley RV rental?
Most RV rentals on RVezy come fully equipped for a comfortable Sonoran Desert adventure. Expect a queen or king bed, dinette and sofa that convert to extra sleeping space, a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, plus a bathroom with shower and toilet. Climate control is huge in Arizona, so virtually every Oro Valley listing includes roof-mounted air conditioning, which is essential from April through October. Many rigs also have a generator, awning, outdoor speakers, Wi-Fi hotspots, and smart TVs. Seatbelts are present for all designated travel seats. Pro tip: filter for listings with a generator if you're planning to boondock at Ironwood Forest, because you'll want that AC even in October.
energy.gov/energysaver/air-conditioningWhat add-ons can I get with my Oro Valley RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy offer some genuinely useful add-ons to make your campervan rental Oro Valley experience even smoother. Common options include camp chairs and tables ($15 to $30), full kitchen kits with pots, pans, and dishes ($25 to $50), bedding and linen packages ($30 to $60), generator use ($25 to $50 per day), bikes, and even pre-stocked groceries. Delivery and pickup add-ons are popular for travelers arriving at Tucson International Airport. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night with overage fees of $0.30 to $0.50 per mile. Pro tip: bundle the kitchen kit and linen package on your first trip, because hunting down a coffee pot at 6 AM in a new RV is nobody's idea of fun.
flytucson.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your RV rental in Arizona is handled securely through the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash or a card directly to the host. You pay the rental total, taxes, and any add-ons at booking using a credit card. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and is placed as a hold on your card before pickup, then released after the trip wraps up as long as there is no damage or extra cleaning required. Do a thorough walk-through with your host at both pickup and drop-off, taking date-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, and odometer to keep your deposit refund quick and painless.
