Camping near Salome, Arizona
Salome is a small desert community in La Paz County, along U.S. Route 60 in the McMullen Valley between Quartzsite and Wickenburg. The town sits in the Sonoran Desert with views of the Harquahala and Harcuvar mountain ranges, and the surrounding area is dominated by BLM public land. It functions primarily as a winter destination for RV travelers, with a heavy snowbird presence from roughly October through April.
RV parks in the immediate area range from full-hookup resorts to simpler gravel-site parks geared to long stays. Indian Hills RV Resort, Wagon West RV Park, Desert Palms Golf and RV Resort, Salome KOA Journey, and Ramblin Roads RV Park are the closest options for renters basing a trip here.
Salome works well as a base for exploring western Arizona. Quartzsite sits about thirty miles west via US-60 and I-10, and the Colorado River near Parker is roughly an hour and a half away, putting Lake Havasu and Alamo Lake State Park within day-trip range.
Things to do around Salome
Off-highway vehicle riding is the dominant activity. The Arizona Peace Trail passes through the region, connecting hundreds of miles of interconnected desert routes accessible from local RV parks. A popular route is the Harquahala Mountain Back Country Byway, a rough BLM road that climbs to the highest peak in southwestern Arizona at 5,681 feet, where an adobe Smithsonian solar observatory built in 1920 still stands.
Hikers can tackle the Harquahala Peak Trail, a strenuous route of roughly 11 miles round trip that climbs the old pack trail into the Harquahala Mountains Wilderness. Rockhounds search local washes and BLM land for agates, jasper, chalcedony, and quartz.
Day trips include Kofa National Wildlife Refuge and Palm Canyon to the southwest, Alamo Lake State Park for bass fishing and birding, and the January gem, mineral, and RV shows in Quartzsite.

Salome is a winter-season destination. From October through April, daytime highs are comfortable and the RV parks fill with returning snowbirds, many of whom book monthly or seasonal stays well in advance. January and February bring the largest crowds, driven by the Quartzsite gem, mineral, and RV shows, which pull large numbers of visitors to the region.
Spring stays pleasant into April, then heats up quickly. By May, afternoon highs regularly push into the upper 80s and 90s, and June through August brings sustained triple-digit heat, with July averaging near 103°F. Summer is off-season for most travelers; some parks reduce hours or close entirely, and shade is limited.
Late summer is the North American Monsoon, which produces the wettest month of the year in July and can trigger flash flooding in desert washes. Fall cools steadily through October and November, and the snowbird season restarts.
Booking an RV site near Salome
Winter sites go quickly. Many Salome-area parks, including Wagon West RV Park and Ramblin Roads RV Park, cater to a returning snowbird base that often rebooks the following season before leaving. For a January or February stay, contact parks directly several months out, and expect waitlists during the Quartzsite show weeks.
Salome KOA Journey takes reservations through the KOA website or the national reservation line and is open year-round. Indian Hills RV Resort and Desert Palms Golf and RV Resort book directly through their offices.
For public-land alternatives, Alamo Lake State Park reservations go through the Arizona State Parks reservation system, and BLM Long-Term Visitor Areas near Quartzsite issue short-visit or long-term permits for stays during the September 15 to April 15 LTVA season. Confirm rig-length limits and hookup type when booking.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a quiet, spread-out desert town with limited services. Salome has a small market, post office, fuel, and a handful of cafes along US-60, but larger grocery runs and medical services mean a drive to Parker, Wickenburg, or Lake Havasu City.
Most RV parks in the area are gravel lots with pull-through sites sized for larger rigs. Full hookups, laundry, and clubhouses are standard at the resort-style parks, while smaller parks may offer partial hookups only. Cell coverage is generally reliable along US-60 and thins out in the surrounding mountains.
The landscape is open desert with wide mountain views, dark skies at night, and consistent sun. Bring sun protection year-round, watch washes during monsoon storms, and plan for temperature swings of roughly 30°F between daytime highs and overnight lows.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Salome, AZ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Salome, AZ?
RV rental in Salome is one of the most affordable desert getaways in Arizona, with travel trailers typically starting around $90 to $140 per night, Class C motorhomes ranging from $150 to $250, and larger Class A rigs around $200 to $350. Because Salome sits in the McMullen Valley snowbird corridor near Quartzsite, rates spike from January through March when the area floods with winter visitors. Want a cheap RV rental in Salome? Book midweek in April or November when temperatures are still pleasant but demand drops sharply. Pro tip: many hosts offer weekly discounts of 10 to 20 percent, which is perfect if you're chasing the famous January Quartzsite Sports, Vacation and RV Show just 24 miles west.
visitarizona.com/places/cities/quartzsite/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Salome, Arizona?
Good news: a regular driver license is all you need to rent an RV in Salome for virtually every rig on RVezy. Arizona does not require a commercial driver license (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use recreational vehicles, no matter the size, so your standard Class D license from any US state or Canadian province works. You need to be 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the RVezy platform during booking. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club before flying in. Most first-time renters are pleasantly surprised by how quick and paperwork-free the whole process is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Salome RV rental?
Every booking on RVezy automatically includes a renter protection package plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the McMullen Valley desert with serious peace of mind. The protection package covers most damages to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your preferred coverage level during checkout (guests pick the package, not the host). That means whether you are parked at Black Rock RV Village or exploring the Harquahala Mountains backcountry, you are covered on your RV rental in Salome. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully if you plan to tackle the Arizona Peace Trail or other rough desert roads, because the higher tiers add an extra cushion for the dust, rocks, and washboard surfaces this region is famous for.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Salome RV rental?
You have flexibility, no matter what life throws at you. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every booking (not the host), and there is a grace-period window after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. After that, the refund amount depends on how far out your trip is and whether unusual circumstances such as severe weather are involved. This is especially helpful in Salome, where summer monsoon storms can pop up in July and August. You can reach RVezy support before, during, and after your trip if plans shift. Pro tip: book early for January Quartzsite events, but lock in your dates with confidence knowing flexibility is built in to every RV rental in Salome.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Salome RV rental?
Absolutely, and Salome is wonderfully dog-friendly. Many RVezy hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Salome, and you can filter listings with one click using the Pet-Friendly filter to see only rigs that welcome furry co-pilots. Once you arrive, your dog will love exploring the wide open desert at Alamo Lake State Park (leashed pets are allowed in campgrounds and on trails) and the miles of BLM land surrounding McMullen Valley. Black Rock RV Village and the Salome KOA Journey both welcome pets in their RV sites. Pro tip: desert temperatures can scorch paws from May through September, so plan walks for sunrise or after sunset and always pack extra water.
azstateparks.com/alamo-lake/explore/park-policiesCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Salome?
Yes, and RV delivery in Salome is one of the smartest moves for first-timers. Many hosts will drop the rig directly at your campsite, whether you are booked into Alamo Lake State Park, Black Rock RV Village, the Salome KOA Journey, or a private patch of BLM desert. The host levels it, connects hookups, and walks you through every system from the awning to the propane stove. That means you can fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor, rent a car for the roughly 2-hour drive west on US-60, and arrive to find your motorhome rental in Salome ready to roll. Pro tip: ask about delivery fees up front, as most hosts charge a flat rate plus a per-mile fee beyond a free radius.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Salome%2C+ArizonaHow far can I drive on my Salome RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have plenty of road to explore, and yes, RV rental with unlimited mileage is available from select hosts in the Salome area (use the search filters to find them). Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with overage typically running $0.35 to $0.50 per mile. From Salome, you can reach Quartzsite in about 38 miles, Lake Havasu City in about 90 miles, Phoenix in roughly 135 miles, Sedona in about 200 miles, and the Grand Canyon South Rim in roughly 275 miles, all doable on a Salome RV trip. Pro tip: estimate your route on Google Maps before booking and message the host so they can adjust the mileage allotment to match your plans.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Salome%2C+ArizonaWhere are the best campgrounds near Salome, AZ?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Salome. The Salome KOA Journey on US-60 offers full hookups, a pool, and easy pull-throughs perfect for big rigs. Black Rock RV Village just east in Brenda features over 400 sites, a heated pool, pickleball courts, and direct access to the Arizona Peace Trail for ATV riders. Dreamers RV Park sits right on Highway 60 with 30/50-amp full hookups and clubhouse amenities. For a true wilderness experience, Alamo Lake State Park (37 miles north of Wenden) has 217 sites including full hookups for $50 a night and some of the darkest night skies in Arizona. Pro tip: reserve Alamo Lake months ahead for January through March bass-fishing season.
azstateparks.com/alamo-lake/camping-and-cabins/rv-and-tent-campingWhen is the best time to visit Salome in an RV?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Salome runs from mid-October through mid-April, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 85 degree range and nights cool to the 40s and 50s. January and February are peak snowbird season because of Quartzsite's massive RV shows and gem festivals just down the road. Summer is a different beast: July highs average 103 degrees and can hit 116, so it's best avoided unless your rental has rock-solid air conditioning and you plan to drive at dawn. Pro tip: November and March hit the value sweet spot, with warm sunny days, cool sleeping nights, blooming desert wildflowers in early spring, and noticeably lower nightly rates than peak January.
weather.gov/psr/I've never driven an RV before. Is Salome a good place to start?
Salome is genuinely one of the best places in Arizona for first time renting an RV. US-60 through town is a wide, flat two-lane highway with light traffic, generous shoulders, and almost no steep grades, so you can ease into RV driving without big-city stress or mountain switchbacks. Every RVezy host gives a full walkthrough at pickup covering the slides, leveling, hookups, propane, and waste tanks, so you're never left guessing. Many hosts also offer delivery, which removes driving from the equation entirely on day one. Pro tip: practice backing in at the Salome KOA Journey, which has long, easy pull-through sites perfect for getting comfortable before you tackle a tighter spot.
azdot.gov/adot-news/safe-driving-tips-larger-vehiclesWhat happens if I break down during my Salome RV trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so one phone call gets help dispatched whether you are on US-60, deep on the BLM trails near the Harcuvar Mountains, or out at Alamo Lake. The service covers towing, flat tires, jump starts, lockouts, and fuel delivery. Cell coverage is solid along US-60 through Salome and Wenden but spotty on the dirt roads heading to Alamo Lake, so download offline maps before you head out. Pro tip: save the host contact info and the RVezy roadside-assistance number on your phone so you can reach help fast even with limited service.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Salome?
An RV road trip from Salome opens up the whole Southwest. Head about 38 miles west to Quartzsite for its legendary January RV shows, then continue to the Colorado River and Yuma. Drive about 90 miles north to Lake Havasu City and the historic London Bridge, or roughly 135 miles east on US-60 to Phoenix for big-city stops. Adventure seekers love the 200-mile run to Sedona red rocks, or the 275-mile push to the Grand Canyon South Rim. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage stops at the border. Pro tip: loop Salome to Lake Havasu to Sedona to Phoenix for a great 7-day Arizona circuit.
nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Salome RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to estimate. Class B campervans get around 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A rigs typically run 6 to 10 mpg. Gas in the Salome and Quartzsite area generally runs slightly above the Arizona state average because of the remote location, so fill up in Wickenburg (54 miles east) or Quartzsite before long trips. A 300-mile loop from Salome to Lake Havasu and back in a Class C will run roughly $90 to $130 in fuel at current Arizona prices. Pro tip: the Pilot Travel Center in Quartzsite at I-10 Exit 17 has the easiest big-rig access and consistently lower prices than the small stations along US-60.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Salome?
For peak snowbird season from December through March, book Alamo Lake State Park and popular Salome-area RV parks at least 3 to 6 months ahead, as full-hookup sites at Alamo's Campground F sell out quickly. Arizona State Parks reservations open up to one year in advance through the official ReserveAmerica system or by calling 1-877-MY PARKS, with a $3.60 non-refundable reservation fee per site. Private parks like Black Rock RV Village and Salome KOA Journey book direct on their websites. For April through October you can usually grab a spot a week or two out. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, set up alerts on Campnab or similar tools for last-minute Alamo Lake cancellations during peak months.
azstateparks.com/reserveWhat are local driving conditions like around Salome?
Driving around Salome is refreshingly low-stress for a campervan rental in Salome or any size rig. US-60 is the main artery, a flat well-maintained two-lane highway with 65 mph speed limits and minimal traffic outside of January's snowbird rush. Watch for occasional dust storms (haboobs) in summer monsoon season, wandering livestock and wild burros near Alamo Lake, and the long graded dirt road to Alamo Lake State Park, which can get slick after rain. Strong crosswinds across the open desert can push a tall RV around, so slow down when you see blowing dust. Pro tip: avoid driving the dirt road to Alamo Lake right after a winter storm, and never enter a flooded wash. Turn around, don't drown.
azdot.gov/adot-news/dust-storms-arizona-pull-aside-stay-aliveWhat amenities do Salome-area campgrounds offer, and where can I dump and fill water?
You'll find excellent infrastructure in the Salome area. Black Rock RV Village, Salome KOA Journey, Dreamers RV Park, and Voyager Haven all offer full hookups with 30 and 50-amp service, water, sewer, laundry, showers, and Wi-Fi at the main parks. Alamo Lake State Park has a dump station, potable water fill, and showers in Campgrounds B and C. If you're boondocking on BLM land near the McMullen Valley, the dump station at the Salome KOA Journey and the one at La Paz County Park (south of Parker) are the closest options. Pro tip: top off fresh water before heading out to Alamo Lake, since the park's water spigots can be busy on winter weekends.
azstateparks.com/alamo-lake/explore/facility-informationWhat is typically included inside an RV rental in Salome?
Most RVs on RVezy come ready to camp the moment you turn the key. Expect a full kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, and basic cookware; a bathroom with toilet and shower; comfortable beds (queen, bunk, or convertible dinette); air conditioning and furnace; a generator or solar setup for boondocking; and seatbelts for safe driving. Many listings include outdoor chairs, a folding table, and hookup hoses. TV and Wi-Fi vary by listing, so check the amenities section. For Salome hot desert climate, confirm the AC works well and ask about a second roof unit if you are booking summer or shoulder season. Pro tip: use the RVezy amenity filters to narrow your search to rigs with the features your family needs most.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Salome%2C+ArizonaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when booking?
RVezy hosts in Salome offer plenty of useful extras to customize your trip. Common add-ons include generator hours ($3 to $5 per hour beyond what is included), linen and kitchen kits ($50 to $100 flat), camping chairs and outdoor gear, bike racks, and ATV-friendly setups for the Arizona Peace Trail. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night with overage at $0.35 to $0.50 per mile. Pickup is typically at the host location in or near Salome, Wenden, or Quartzsite, though delivery to your campsite is widely available. Pro tip: if you are heading to Alamo Lake, ask the host to add extra fresh water capacity or a portable waste tote, because the dump station is at the park itself and there is little in between.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Salome%2C+ArizonaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple, secure, and handled entirely through the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash to a host. You pay the full rental cost (plus taxes, protection package, and any add-ons) at the time of booking with a credit card. A refundable security deposit, separate from the booking payment, is held before the trip starts and released after a clean return with no damage or extra charges. To avoid deposit issues, do a thorough walkaround video at both pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and empty the tanks at a dump station before handing back the keys. Pro tip: keep all gas and dump-station receipts during your Salome RV trip as proof.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow should I handle the desert heat on a summer Salome RV trip?
Summer in Salome is no joke, but with smart prep it's totally doable. July and August highs average 103 degrees and occasionally hit 116, so book an RV with strong air conditioning (ideally dual-zone or two rooftop units), plan driving for early mornings before 10 a.m., and stay hooked up to 50-amp shore power whenever possible to keep the AC running hard. Stock at least one gallon of water per person per day, plus extra for your pets. Visit higher-elevation escapes like Prescott (5,400 feet, 100 miles east) or Flagstaff (7,000 feet, 200 miles northeast) for cooler air. Pro tip: shoulder seasons in March, April, October, and November offer 80-degree days and 50-degree nights, which most regulars consider the true sweet spot for desert RVing.
