Campgrounds and RV parks near Taylor, AZ

Water recreation centers on Fool Hollow Lake, which supports boating, kayaking, paddling, and fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, trout, crappie, catfish, and panfish. Arizona Game and Fish stocks rainbow trout seasonally, and the park has two boat ramps, two fish-cleaning stations, and shoreline trails. Gasoline motors are capped at 10 horsepower. The surrounding Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest includes the White Mountain Trail System, a network of loop and connector trails used for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Wildlife viewing is a common draw: elk, mule deer, coyotes, bobcats, and beavers are all seen in the area, and elk bugling is a fall highlight. Day trips reach Petrified Forest National Park to the north and the Mogollon Rim country to the west.

Elevation drives the climate here. Summers are warm and generally pleasant compared to the desert, which is why the Show Low area draws heavy weekend traffic from Phoenix and Tucson. Fool Hollow Lake campsites fill quickly on summer weekends, and reservations up to six months out are recommended for lakeside loops. The North American Monsoon typically arrives in late June and runs through August, bringing frequent afternoon thunderstorms, lightning, and localized flooding. Fire restrictions are common in early summer before monsoon moisture arrives, and posted red-flag conditions can preclude wood and charcoal fires at Fool Hollow Lake. Fall brings cool nights, elk rutting activity, and easier reservation availability. Winter is cold with possible snow, and while Fool Hollow Lake stays open year-round, its dump station operates only from May 1 through October 15. Some private RV parks in the area, including Venture In RV Resort, run a seasonal May-to-October schedule and are age-qualified at 55 and older.

Sites at Fool Hollow Lake accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, with 30-amp and 50-amp electric, water at all sites, and sewer available in the Mallard and Redhead loops. Concrete pads, fire rings, picnic tables, flush restrooms, and hot showers are standard. Generators are not permitted at any time in the recreation area, and the entrance gate uses a PIN pad for late-arriving reservation holders after 8 p.m. Expect cool nights year-round due to elevation, even in July and August. Bring layered clothing, rain gear for monsoon afternoons, and secure food storage for elk, raccoons, and skunks. Cell coverage is uneven in the area, and streaming over park Wi-Fi or hotspots is often unreliable.
