Campgrounds and RV parks near Wellton, AZ

Winter visitors spend most days outdoors. Coyote Wash Golf Course sits in Wellton itself, and additional courses cluster around Yuma and the Foothills. BLM land bordering the town opens up ATV and UTV routes, desert hiking, and rockhounding, and many parks are within a short drive of trailheads. Overnight camping is also permitted in areas administered by the Bureau of Land Management, including the Imperial Dam Recreation Area, Senator Wash, Mittry Lake, and Fortuna Pond, all of which offer paddling, fishing, and birding along the lower Colorado River. Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, northeast of town, is known for desert bighorn sheep and native fan palms. Yuma is 25 to 30 minutes west for groceries, restaurants, medical care, and the historic territorial prison, and the Mexican border at San Luis is roughly 45 minutes south for day trips.

Wellton runs on a clear snowbird calendar. The busy season stretches from roughly November through March, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 60s and 70s Fahrenheit and rain is scarce. Private RV parks fill quickly during this window, and many operate on monthly and seasonal rates that book out well in advance. Weekly and nightly sites are easier to secure in November and again in late March. Spring shoulder months bring warming temperatures and occasional wildflower blooms in Kofa and the surrounding desert, with April still generally pleasant before heat sets in. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F, making winter camping the predominant option for visitors to Wellton RV parks. Some parks reduce services or close amenities such as pools and activity halls between roughly May and September. Fall reopens the season. October cools noticeably by month end, and by early November returning snowbirds begin arriving in force. Late-summer monsoon storms can push brief heavy rain and dust into the region through July, August, and September.

Wellton itself is a small, quiet town. Expect basic services, a grocery store, fuel, and a handful of restaurants, with Yuma filling the role of the regional hub for larger shopping trips, medical appointments, and RV repair. Interstate 8 and the Union Pacific line both run through town, so sites closer to the tracks can pick up train noise. Many of the RV parks are 55-plus communities with a strong seasonal social calendar: potlucks, cards, shuffleboard, pickleball, and craft groups during winter months. Sites are typically level with full hookups, and most parks accept big rigs. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town and along I-8 but drops off quickly on BLM land. Visitors should plan for intense sun year-round, dry air, and cool desert nights in winter. Water, shade, and sun protection matter even in January.
