Campgrounds and RV parks near Winslow, AZ

Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert are the primary regional draw, with a paved 28-mile park road that connects overlooks, short interpretive trails, and the fossilized log fields near the Rainbow Forest Museum. Meteor Crater, roughly 20 miles west of Winslow, offers rim tours, a visitor center, and interpretive exhibits at the site of a preserved impact crater. In Winslow proper, the Standin' on the Corner Park references the Eagles song 'Take It Easy,' and the historic La Posada Hotel and Old Trails Museum cover the town's Route 66 and Santa Fe Railway history. Homolovi Ruins State Park protects over 300 Ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites, with excavated pueblos open to visitors and short hiking trails accessible directly from the campground.

Winslow has a high-desert climate with hot, dry summers and cold winter nights. Spring, roughly March through May, and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days, cool nights, and low precipitation. These shoulder seasons are also the best times for hiking and backcountry trips inside Petrified Forest, where daytime highs stay manageable. Summer brings the North American Monsoon, generally from early July through mid-September, with afternoon thunderstorms, lightning, and flash-flood risk in washes. Daytime highs push into the upper 80s and low 90s at Winslow's elevation, though nights cool off. August is the wettest month on the local climate record. Winter is quiet and cold. Homolovi and the private parks stay open year-round, but nights routinely drop near or below freezing, and light snow is possible from November into March. Petrified Forest itself is a day-use park with gated hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., so winter backcountry campers should plan around short daylight and the requirement to pick up permits at least an hour before closing.

Expect open, treeless terrain, big skies, and steady wind. Most campgrounds around Winslow sit on gravel pads with limited natural shade, so awnings and sun protection matter. Trains run along the BNSF mainline through town, and sites near I-40 pick up highway noise, particularly at in-town parks. Cell coverage is generally solid along the I-40 corridor and drops off in the backcountry. Hookup availability varies: Homolovi Ruins State Park has a mix of electric and non-electric sites with a dump station and 30/50 amp service on pull-throughs, while the private parks typically offer full hookups with pull-through options for larger rigs. Wildlife includes pronghorn, coyotes, jackrabbits, and free-roaming burros near Homolovi. Rattlesnakes are active from spring through fall, so keep pets leashed and watch step-outs at dusk.
