Campgrounds near Alma, Arkansas
Alma sits at the junction of Interstate 40 and U.S. 71 in Crawford County, on the western edge of the Ozarks in northwest Arkansas. The location makes it a practical staging point for RV travelers heading between Fort Smith, Fayetteville, and eastern Oklahoma, with the Boston Mountains rising directly to the north.
RV options close to town range from small-format parks to full resorts. Crabtree RV Park and Pathfinder RV Resort offer straightforward hookup sites within easy reach of I-40 services, while Eagle Crest Golf & RV Park pairs camping with an on-site course. William O Darby RV Community serves travelers connected to nearby Fort Chaffee.
For a state-park experience, Lake Fort Smith State Park lies about 30 miles northeast in the Boston Mountain Valley. The park overlooks Lake Fort Smith and serves as the western terminus of the 240-mile Ozark Highlands Trail, a draw for hikers, paddlers, and anglers basing out of an RV.
Things to do near Alma
Outdoor recreation centers on the Ozark foothills and the reservoir to the north. At Lake Fort Smith State Park, visitors fish for bass, catfish, and bream, rent kayaks, pedal boats, or motorboats from the marina, and hike sections of the Ozark Highlands Trail. Swimming, jet skiing, and paddleboarding are not permitted on the lake, since it supplies drinking water to the Fort Smith area; a seasonal park pool provides an alternative.
Closer to town, the Arkansas River corridor and the Fort Smith National Historic Site add a half-day trip option. Golfers can play on-site at Eagle Crest, while families often combine campground stays with visits to Alma's downtown murals and small parks along Highway 71.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the Alma area. Daytime highs are mild, humidity is lower than in midsummer, and campground demand at Lake Fort Smith rises sharply on weekends. Wildflowers along Ozark trails peak in April and May, and fall color typically arrives in late October into early November.
Summer is hot and humid, with July highs commonly in the low to mid 90s Fahrenheit. Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent, and the seasonal pool at Lake Fort Smith State Park operates from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, with the marina running daily during that same window. This is also peak booking season for private RV parks along the I-40 corridor.
Winter is short and cool. Lake Fort Smith State Park's campground stays open year-round with a dump station available, but the restrooms and showers close from December through February, so only self-contained RVs are practical during those months. Ice storms are possible but not routine.

Great experience. Tina is very kind. Done exactly what she said she would do. Trailer was well stocked. Driver explained in detail to my son everything he needed to know about the trailers sewer & water. If you are thinking of renting a trailer for a family member from out of state don’t hesitate. We had a great weekend and my son’s family had a great place to rest.

How to book
Sites at Lake Fort Smith State Park are booked through the Arkansas State Parks reservation system, online or by calling the park directly. Individual campsite reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance of the arrival date, and the 30-site campground fills quickly on holiday weekends and during peak fall color, so early booking is recommended. Class AAA sites in Loop A offer full hookups with 50-amp service and sit closest to the lakeshore; Class B sites in Loop B carry water and 30-amp electric. Weekend stays require a two-night minimum, and holiday weekends require three nights.
Private parks near Alma, including Crabtree RV Park, Pathfinder RV Resort, and Eagle Crest Golf & RV Park, typically take reservations by phone or through their own websites. For extended stays or events at Fort Chaffee, William O Darby RV Community handles bookings directly.
What to expect on-site
Private parks near Alma tend to offer level, gravel or paved pads with full hookups, laundry, and quick highway access, which suits travelers using the town as an overnight stop on I-40. Sites are generally open with limited tree cover, so shade varies.
Lake Fort Smith State Park is different in character. Sites are spacious and well-maintained, each with a picnic table and fire ring, and Loop A sits closest to the lakeshore with lengths that can accommodate large rigs. Restrooms with hot showers operate March through November; the dump station runs year-round. Pets are allowed on leash but are not permitted inside park buildings or in the lake, and quiet hours are observed from 10 p.m. to sunrise. Cell coverage weakens as the road climbs into the Boston Mountains, so download maps in advance.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Alma, AR, and how can I save on my trip?
RV rental in Alma, AR is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Ozarks, with travel trailers often starting around $80 to $130 per night, campervans in the $100 to $175 range, and larger Class A or Class C motorhomes typically $175 to $300 per night. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Alma,ArkansasWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Alma, Arkansas?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Alma for virtually every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy. Arkansas only requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating above 26,000 pounds, and almost every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, travel trailer, and fifth wheel listed in the Alma area falls well below that limit. RVezy approved drivers are generally required to be 25 or older, and your ID is verified digitally before pickup, so there's nothing extra to bring to the host beyond your standard license. First time renting an RV in the Natural State? You're set to drive straight from Alma to Devil's Den.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside support comes with my Alma RV rental?
Every RV rental in Alma, AR booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. During checkout you choose the coverage level that fits your trip, and the plan covers eligible damage to the vehicle if something happens on the road or at the campsite. Roadside help is just a phone call away if you get a flat on I-40 heading toward Fort Smith or need a jump start at Lake Fort Smith State Park. Combine that with the host's pickup walkthrough and you have a safety net most first-time renters didn't know existed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my RV rental in Alma?
Booking your Alma RV trip is low-risk because RVezy sets and manages the cancellation policy, not the host. The policy includes a money-back grace period after you confirm and takes into account how far out you are from your check-in date. Because it is a platform-wide process, you won't see a cancellation policy on individual listings and don't have to compare fine print between hosts. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credit. If plans shift on your end, message RVezy support and they will walk you through next steps so you can rebook with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Alma RV trip?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental Alma travelers can take into the Ozarks is just a filter click away on RVezy. Use the Pet-Friendly filter to see listings where hosts welcome dogs, then message the host if you have specific questions about size or shedding. Once you've got the rig, you're golden, Devil's Den State Park allows leashed pets on trails and campsites (and even has pet-friendly cabins), and Lake Fort Smith State Park is similarly dog-welcoming. Bring a tie-out, plenty of water for hot Ozark afternoons, and a towel for muddy Lee Creek paws. Pro tip: ask your host for a fitted sheet for the bed so your pup can lounge without leaving traces behind.
arkansasstateparks.com/parks/devils-den-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Alma?

Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service and check their delivery radius and fee in the listing. It's the easiest way to enjoy a motorhome rental Alma getaway without driving a foot of it yourself.

arkansashighways.com/Where are the best campgrounds near Alma for an RV stay?

Top picks within 45 minutes include Fort Smith-Alma RV Park on Highway 71 (full hookups, pool, fishing pond, just off I-40/I-49), Lake Fort Smith State Park in Mountainburg (about 15 miles north with paved sites and lake swimming), Devil's Den State Park near West Fork (roughly 35 miles up I-49, 135 sites tucked into Lee Creek Valley), and Springhill Park on the Arkansas River near Barling for sunset RV sites with boat ramp access. For something rustic, Shores Lake Recreation Area in the Ozark National Forest is about 25 minutes east. Book Devil's Den early, weekends fill up to a year in advance.
arkansasstateparks.com/parks/devils-den-state-parkWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Alma?
Alma sits in a humid subtropical climate, so the sweet spot for an Alma RV trip is mid-March through late May and mid-September through early November, when daytime highs run a comfortable 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and the Ozarks explode in wildflowers or fall color. Summer (June through August) brings hot, humid days averaging 88 to 93 degrees with the occasional thunderstorm, but the campground pools at Fort Smith-Alma RV Park and Devil's Den are open, so families still love it. Winter is mild with highs in the upper 40s and 50s, so year-round RV travel is totally doable. Insider tip: late October peak foliage along Highway 23 (the Pig Trail) is unforgettable.
weather.gov/lzk/I've never rented an RV before. How does the process work in Alma?
You're in great hands, RVezy is built for first time renting an RV, and Alma hosts are known for being patient and thorough. After you book, you'll message your host directly to confirm pickup or delivery details. At handover, the host gives a full walkthrough covering the generator, slide-outs, water and waste tanks, propane, awning, and how to hitch or unhitch if it's a trailer. Take video on your phone so you can re-watch later at the campsite. RVezy support is available 24/7 before, during, and after your trip, and most Alma hosts respond to messages within an hour. By the time you pull into Devil's Den, you'll feel like you've done this a dozen times.
nps.gov/subjects/camping/index.htmWhat happens if I have a breakdown or roadside issue during my Alma RV trip?
Breathe easy: every RVezy booking with a protection plan includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so help is one phone call away whether you're on I-40 near Van Buren or camping in the Ozark National Forest. Roadside covers common needs like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and fuel delivery. Step one if something happens: pull over safely, then call the roadside number provided in your booking confirmation. Step two: message your host, who often knows the closest mechanic or RV-friendly tow shop in the Fort Smith metro. The Alma area has solid cell coverage along the interstates, so getting help is rarely a problem. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Alma RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most Alma RV rentals, which makes sense given Alma sits about 15 minutes from the Oklahoma border and within easy reach of Missouri, Texas, and Louisiana. Popular cross-border runs include Tulsa (about 120 miles west on I-40), Branson, Missouri (around 150 miles north), and the Dallas-Fort Worth area (roughly 280 miles south). Travel into Canada may be permitted depending on the host and their insurance, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend across that border. Confirm any out-of-state plans in your initial message so the host can adjust the mileage package.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Alma RV road trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest line item after the rental itself, so plan ahead. Travel trailers and campervans average around 12 to 18 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A diesel pushers run 7 to 10 MPG. Arkansas regularly has some of the lowest fuel prices in the country, often well under the national average, and Alma has multiple truck-friendly stations at the I-40/I-49 interchange including Love's and Pilot that easily accommodate big rigs. For a 3 night, 300 mile loop in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Arkansas before crossing into neighboring states where prices often jump.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Alma?
For the smoothest Alma RV trip, book state park campgrounds 3 to 6 months ahead, especially Devil's Den State Park, which takes reservations up to a year in advance and fills its 135 sites quickly for spring and fall weekends. Use the official Arkansas State Parks reservation system at reserve.arkansasstateparks.com for Devil's Den, Lake Fort Smith, and Mount Magazine. Private parks like Fort Smith-Alma RV Park can often accommodate last-minute bookings, especially midweek. Federal sites like Shores Lake and Cove Lake use recreation.gov. Pro tip: weekends at Devil's Den require a two-night minimum, so plan a Friday to Sunday or grab a midweek slot for more flexibility and lower demand.
reserve.arkansasstateparks.com/devils-den/campingWhat are local driving conditions like around Alma?
Driving an RV around Alma is refreshingly easy compared to big-city renters elsewhere. You're right at the I-40 and I-49 interchange, both wide, well-maintained interstates with truck-friendly grades. Heading north into the Ozarks on I-49 toward Fayetteville, you'll climb steady hills, downshift in lower gears and watch your engine temperature. Avoid Highway 23 (the Pig Trail Scenic Byway) in a long Class A or with a big fifth wheel, it's stunning but narrow and twisty, much better in a Class B or C. Spring and early summer can bring severe thunderstorms and the occasional tornado watch, so check the National Weather Service forecast each morning and pull off at a sturdy structure if warnings hit.
weather.gov/lzk/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Alma?
Most campgrounds near Alma make RV life simple. Private parks like Fort Smith-Alma RV Park offer full hookups (water, sewer, 30 and 50 amp electric), plus laundry, bathhouses, propane refills, and pool access. Arkansas State Parks like Lake Fort Smith provide Class AAA sites with full hookups, while Devil's Den has a mix of full-hookup, electric-water only, and primitive sites. Dump stations are available on-site at most parks, and potable water fill stations are clearly marked. For boondocking in the Ozark National Forest, plan to arrive with full fresh water and empty waste tanks. Insider tip: ask Fort Smith-Alma RV Park about propane, they sell by the gallon (not the tank), which often saves you a few dollars.
arkansasstateparks.com/parks/lake-fort-smith-state-parkWhat's typically included inside an Alma RV rental?
Alma RV rentals come ready to roll. Expect a fully equipped kitchen (stove, microwave, fridge, sink, cookware, dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower in most Class B campervans and all Class C and Class A motorhomes, comfortable beds sleeping anywhere from 2 to 10, climate control (air conditioning and propane furnace), and dinettes that often convert to extra beds. Many rigs include a TV, some offer onboard Wi-Fi or hotspot devices, and most have a generator for off-grid power. Seatbelts are provided at designated travel seats, count them when matching your group size. Each listing on RVezy shows photos, sleeping capacity, and amenity icons so you know exactly what's included before you book.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for Alma RV rentals?
Popular add-ons for an Alma campervan rental or motorhome rental include linen and bedding packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, camping chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, generators, and stocked propane tanks. Many hosts also offer pet fees ($25 to $75 per stay) and dump-and-fill service so you don't have to handle waste. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Alma, but delivery to Fort Smith-Alma RV Park, Lake Fort Smith State Park, or even your Airbnb is often available for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary by host, look for the included nightly miles in each listing and add unlimited mileage upfront if you're planning a long Ozark loop.
consumer.ftc.gov/articles/buying-renting-carHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host, which keeps everything tracked and protected. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before pickup (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV class) and released after the trip once the host confirms the rig came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walkthrough video at pickup and drop-off with the host, return with the same fuel and propane levels noted, and empty the waste tanks if that's expected. Keep all receipts and message threads inside the RVezy app for the smoothest checkout.
