Campgrounds near Atkins, Arkansas
Atkins sits in the Arkansas River Valley in Pope County, about halfway between Little Rock and Fort Smith along Interstate 40. The town is a practical base for RV travelers heading to Petit Jean Mountain, Lake Dardanelle, and the Ozark and Ouachita foothills that frame the valley.
The closest full-service option is Petit Jean State Park, Arkansas's first state park, built into the mountain's rugged landscape with native log and stone facilities constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Additional nearby choices include Sun Moon and CARs Campground on Petit Jean Mtn for stays on the mountain itself, Ivy's Cove RV Retreat, Xtreme Paintball and Laser Tag Eclipse Park for families combining camping with on-site activities, and Mission RV Park for a straightforward hookup stop.
Most sites in the area are drive-in accessible for larger rigs, though the mountain roads leading up to Petit Jean include grades and switchbacks that renters should factor into travel time. Atkins itself offers fuel, groceries, and highway access along I-40.
Things to do near Atkins
Petit Jean Mountain is the main draw. Trails lead to the iconic Cedar Falls Trail with a 95-foot waterfall and through the canyons of Seven Hollows, and Lake Bailey offers 100 acres for fishing, kayaking, and pedal boating, with a seasonal boathouse for snacks, rentals, and supplies. Pools, a picnic area, playground, pavilions, boat launch, tennis and basketball courts, and an amphitheater are also on site.
Two lakes support fishing and boating, and over 20 miles of hiking and biking trails wind across the mountain, passing geological features such as Turtle Rocks and Bear Cave. Lake Dardanelle, the Arkansas River, and nearby Mount Nebo State Park round out the day-trip options. Families combining camping with activities often route through Xtreme Paintball and Laser Tag Eclipse Park.

The Arkansas River Valley has four distinct seasons. Spring brings wildflowers and strong waterfall flow on the mountain, along with the wettest months of the year; May averages about 166 mm of rainfall over roughly 12 rainy days, and thunderstorms can be intense. Summer is hot and humid, with highs frequently in the low 90s Fahrenheit and Lake Bailey serving as the primary cool-down.
Fall delivers the most stable camping weather, with mild days, cooler nights, and hardwood color across Petit Jean Mountain from late October into early November. Winter is cool rather than harsh, with occasional freezes and light snow possible; snowfall months at nearby Russellville are January through March and December.
The boathouse and water rentals at Petit Jean run seasonally, but off-season visitors can still hit the trails, and the campground, cabins, and yurts stay open year-round. Summer and fall color weekends are peak, and holiday dates fill first.
Reservations and booking
Petit Jean State Park uses the Arkansas State Parks reservation system. Campsites, yurts, cabins, and rooms at Mather Lodge can be reserved online via the Arkansas State Parks website. Reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance of the scheduled arrival date, and popular sites can book out months ahead for holiday weekends and fall color.
The park has 144 campsites: 55 Class AAA, 67 Class B, and 22 rally-style sites with water and 30 amp only, no ground fires. Class AAA sites offer full hookups with 50 amp electric, water, and sewer, while Class B sites provide 30 amp electric and water.
Weekend reservations are taken for a minimum of two nights, and a three-night minimum is required when a holiday causes a three-day weekend. Private parks such as Ivy's Cove RV Retreat and Mission RV Park book directly through the operator.
What to expect on arrival
Sites at Petit Jean are spread across the mountain. Campsites are divided into four campground areas, each with a modern bathhouse with hot showers and flush toilets; Area A is near Lake Bailey and includes lakeshore sites, while Areas B, C, and D sit on the south side of Ark. 154 in wooded settings. A trailer dump station is centrally located near the rally-style camping area. Cell coverage on the mountain can be inconsistent, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before the climb is wise.
The drive from Atkins to Petit Jean crosses the Arkansas River and ascends the mountain on state Highway 154, which includes tight curves. Class AAA sites accommodate big rigs between 60 and 100 feet with full hookups, while Class B sites fit RVs between 25 and 60 feet, so check length limits before booking a specific loop. Private parks closer to town tend to be flatter and better suited to overnight stops along I-40.
