Campgrounds near Coal Hill
Coal Hill sits in Johnson County, Arkansas, along Interstate 40 in the Arkansas River Valley, with the Ozark National Forest and the Mulberry River corridor immediately to the north. RV travelers use the town as a staging point for river floats, ATV riding, and hikes into the Boston Mountain and Pleasant Hill Ranger Districts. The nearest hookup options include Grape Country RV Park and Dan's Riverview RV Park close to town, both suited to travelers who want paved I-40 access.
Deeper into the forest, Byrd's Adventure Center, Turner Bend Store Cabins and Campground, and Mulberry Mountain Campground line the Highway 23 Pig Trail scenic byway. Byrd's spans 800 acres of campground and trails along the Mulberry River in the Ozark National Forest. Turner Bend has operated at the junction of the Mulberry River and Highway 23 since 1911, offering cabin rentals along with RV and tent sites.
Arkansas designated the Mulberry as a state scenic river in 1985, and it was added to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System in 1992. That designation shapes the recreation mix around Coal Hill and dictates when floats, campsites, and forest roads are usable.
Things to do near Coal Hill
Paddling drives most trips. The Mulberry is a popular fishing stream, with smallmouth, largemouth, and spotted bass along with sunfish in the mix, and it is one of Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's recognized premier smallmouth fisheries. Outfitters at Byrd's Adventure Center and Turner Bend Store Cabins and Campground rent canoes, kayaks, and rafts and run shuttle services on the river.
Off-road riders come for the Mill Creek ORV/ATV area and the wider Ozark National Forest trail system. Turner Bend cabins sit near trailheads that lead into the Mill Creek riding area and other trails in the Boston Mountain and Pleasant Hill Ranger Districts. Byrd's, established in 1982, is the original off-road and ATV park in the state, with 800 acres of trails, mud pits, and obstacles for ATVs, UTVs, motorcycles, and 4x4 vehicles.
Hikers head for the Ozark Highland Trail, and Mulberry Mountain Campground adds ridge-top trails above the river.

Late winter and spring produce the highest, most floatable water on the Mulberry. Rainfall in the region peaks in this window: May is the wettest month at the Fort Smith climate station, averaging around 3.4 inches. Expect fast, cold current, closed low-water crossings, and short-notice trip changes if a front stalls over the Boston Mountains. The Forest Service notes traditional floating months run from late fall through June, with gauge readings between two and four feet considered ideal and anything above 4.5 feet dangerous.
Summer swings to hot, humid conditions with lower flows. When the river drops, it becomes a swimming, wading, and smallmouth-fishing stream rather than a whitewater run. This is the peak window for family bookings at Mulberry Mountain Campground and Grape Country RV Park, and sites near the river fill first on holiday weekends.
Fall brings cooler nights, clear days, and lighter crowds through October. Winter is the quietest season: some primitive Forest Service sites remain open, but river outfitting and cabin activity slow, and freezing rain can briefly affect Highway 23.
How to book campgrounds near Coal Hill
Private campgrounds around Coal Hill are booked directly with the operator. Grape Country RV Park and Dan's Riverview RV Park take reservations by phone or through their websites and generally suit shorter, hookup-focused stays. Mulberry Mountain Campground, Byrd's Adventure Center, and Turner Bend Store Cabins and Campground handle bookings through their own systems and are the ones to reserve earliest for spring floating weekends and festival dates.
Sites within the Ozark National Forest itself, including river access campgrounds along Highway 215, are managed by the U.S. Forest Service and reserved through Recreation.gov, with a mix of reservable and first-come, first-served sites. Recreation.gov opens most Forest Service sites for booking up to six months ahead. Confirm check-in windows with each private operator before arriving, since staffed hours at riverside stores are limited outside of floating season.
What to expect on the ground
Expect narrow, curving mountain roads once the route leaves I-40. Highway 23, the Pig Trail, is scenic but tight for larger rigs, and driveways at riverside campgrounds can be steep. Grocery runs are best done before leaving the interstate corridor near Coal Hill or Ozark. The on-site stores at Turner Bend and Byrd's stock camping basics, deli food, and fuel, but not full grocery selections.
Hookup standards vary. Byrd's Adventure Center offers riverside RV sites with water and electric, along with primitive tent sites and cabins. Turner Bend's RV sites have city water and 20, 30, and 50 amp electric hookups with a dump station on site.
Cell coverage is spotty in the river canyon, black bears are present in the Ozark National Forest, and event weekends at Byrd's can be loud with ATVs and live music. Quieter stays are easier midweek.

arkansas.com/camping-rvDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Coal Hill, Arkansas?
Good news: for the vast majority of RVs on RVezy, your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Coal Hill. Arkansas only requires a Commercial Driver's License for vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating over 26,000 pounds, and nearly every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, travel trailer, and fifth wheel on the platform falls below that threshold. Yes, and it's a game-changer for first-timers. It's the easiest way to enjoy a motorhome rental Coal Hill without ever sitting in the driver's seat.
swl.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/Arkansas-River/Dardanelle/Recreation-Activities/Campgrounds/How do mileage limits work and how far can I travel from Coal Hill?

If you're planning a bigger RV road trip from Coal Hill to Buffalo National River (90 miles north) or Bentonville (110 miles), look for listings with higher mileage caps or RV rental with unlimited mileage, which several local hosts offer. recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233900When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Coal Hill?
Spring and fall are the sweet spots. April and May bring pleasant Arkansas River Valley highs in the 70s and 80s with wildflowers blooming across the Ozark National Forest, while October delivers stunning fall foliage and comfortable 70-degree days, perfect for a Coal Hill RV trip. Summer (June through August) gets genuinely hot, with July highs averaging 92°F and heat index values that can hit triple digits, so look for an RV with strong air conditioning and a 30-amp shore power site. Winter is mild (lows in the low 30s, highs around 50) and many local campgrounds stay open year-round. Pro tip: book by February for peak fall-color weekends, which fill fast.
weather.gov/lzk/I've never rented an RV before. How does it actually work?
First time renting an RV is way easier than you'd expect. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the slide-outs, awning, water hookups, propane, generator, and waste tanks. They'll answer questions and share tips specific to driving in the Arkansas River Valley, like which routes avoid steep grades on Highway 7. If something comes up mid-trip, you can message the host directly or call RVezy's 24/7 support team. Pro tip: for your first Coal Hill RV trip, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer with delivery included so you can focus on enjoying Lake Dardanelle instead of backing into a tight site.
arkansasstateparks.com/parks/lake-dardanelle-state-parkWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance through the renter protection plan, so whether you have a flat tire on Interstate 40, a dead battery at Horsehead Lake, or locked keys at Spadra Campground, help is one phone call away. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the breaker panel and tank gauges at pickup so troubleshooting over the phone goes faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Coal Hill RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
You've got serious road trip range. Most RVezy hosts in Coal Hill happily welcome cross-state travel, so popular RV road trip from Coal Hill routes like the Ozark Highlands to Branson, Missouri (170 miles), Memphis, Tennessee (215 miles), and Oklahoma City (240 miles) are absolutely on the table. Travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and proper insurance documentation, so confirm with your host before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: message the host with your full itinerary up front so they can confirm cross-border plans and adjust mileage if needed.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Coal Hill RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables, but it's predictable. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 10 to 14 MPG, and Class A motorhomes run 7 to 10 MPG, while travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Arkansas gas prices are typically below the national average, and the closest stations to Coal Hill are along Interstate 40 in Clarksville (Exit 58), about 8 miles east. For a 4-day RV trip averaging 300 miles in a Class C at $3.10/gallon, budget roughly $75 to $95 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Love's or Pilot in Russellville (24 miles east) for the lowest diesel prices in the valley.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Coal Hill?
Booking ahead is the move, but you have options. For U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sites like Spadra Park Campground and Forest Service campgrounds like Horsehead Lake, reserve through Recreation.gov up to 6 months in advance, especially for Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends and October fall-color weekends, which sell out fast. Arkansas State Parks like Lake Dardanelle accept reservations 13 months out through ArkansasStateParks.com. Private RV parks around Clarksville and Russellville usually have more last-minute availability. Pro tip: midweek arrivals at Spadra and Cove Lake are often wide open even in summer, making Tuesday-to-Friday a smart play for spontaneous campervan rental Coal Hill trips.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233900What are driving conditions like in and around Coal Hill?
Driving here is refreshingly easy. Coal Hill sits right off Interstate 40, the main east-west route across Arkansas, so getting in and out is straightforward with wide lanes and flat terrain along the Arkansas River Valley. Local roads like Highway 64 and Highway 164 are well-paved and low-traffic. If you're heading north into the Ozark National Forest on Highway 21 or Scenic Highway 7, expect winding two-lane roads with steep grades and tight switchbacks, so take it slow in a larger Class A. Spring brings strong thunderstorms and occasional tornado watches; check the National Weather Service Little Rock office before departing. Pro tip: avoid Highway 7 north of Dover in heavy rain, since runoff can flood low spots.
weather.gov/lzk/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Coal Hill?
You'll find a great mix of options. Spadra Park Campground (8 miles away) offers 30-amp electric and water at most sites, plus a dump station, flush toilets, hot showers, two boat ramps, and a playground. Lake Dardanelle State Park has full 30/50-amp hookups, sewer, Wi-Fi, and a visitor center. Ozark National Forest sites like Horsehead Lake are more rustic with vault toilets and no hookups, perfect for a self-contained RV. The closest free dump station to Coal Hill is at Spadra, and potable water is available year-round there. Pro tip: top off freshwater before leaving the campground since rural Highway 64 has limited RV-friendly fill stations between here and the Buffalo River.
swl.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/Arkansas-River/Dardanelle/Recreation-Activities/Campgrounds/What's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Coal Hill?
Expect a comfortable home on wheels. Most Coal Hill RV rentals come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning, furnace, fresh and gray water tanks, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Class C motorhomes typically sleep 4 to 7, Class A rigs sleep 6 to 8, and travel trailers vary widely. Many hosts include a generator for boondocking, an outdoor awning, a TV, and Wi-Fi or a hotspot. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host if you need specifics like a 30 vs 50-amp shore cord, which matters at Spadra (30-amp only) versus Lake Dardanelle State Park (both).
arkansasstateparks.com/parks/lake-dardanelle-state-parkWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts offer some genuinely useful extras. Popular add-ons for a Coal Hill RV trip include bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with pots and dishes ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, generators, bike racks, and propane refills. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Coal Hill, Clarksville, or Russellville, with a 30 to 60-minute orientation walkthrough included. Delivery and setup to nearby campgrounds like Spadra Park, Cove Lake, or Lake Dardanelle State Park runs roughly $2 to $4 per mile beyond a free radius. Pro tip: book the linens add-on for your first trip, then bring your own next time once you know what fits.
arkansas.com/camping-rvHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay for your Coal Hill rental directly through RVezy with a credit or debit card, so hosts never handle your payment information. A refundable security deposit is authorized separately on your card before the trip starts (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) and released after the host confirms the rig was returned on time, clean, and with the agreed fuel and tank levels. Take dated photos of the interior, exterior, odometer, and fuel gauge at both pickup and dropoff. Pro tip: empty the gray and black tanks at the Spadra dump station before returning the RV to avoid extra cleaning fees.
