Campgrounds and RV parks near Dumas, AR

Water recreation drives most trip plans. Lake Chicot offers excellent fishing year-round for bass, crappie, catfish, and bream, and the on-site marina rents fishing boats, kayaks, and personal watercraft. Anglers also target the Arkansas River and the White River National Wildlife Refuge, both within easy driving distance. Birding is strong year round, with the Mississippi Flyway making the campground trails and shoreline excellent for bird watching. Waterfowl viewing peaks in late fall and winter. Leroy Percy State Park protects cypress and hardwood bottomland with boardwalks and an alligator pond. History travelers can visit the Rohwer Japanese American Relocation Center site north of Dumas and the Delta Cultural Center in Helena. Families typically get the most out of state park visitor centers, junior ranger programs, and shoreline fishing piers.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. March through May brings warming temperatures, wildflowers, and active fishing, though thunderstorms and occasional tornadoes are part of the pattern across eastern Arkansas. Late April and May tend to fill campgrounds at Lake Chicot and Moro Bay on weekends. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs frequently in the low nineties and heavy dew points. Shaded pull-through sites and full electric hookups for air conditioning become important. Biting insects, including mosquitoes near the oxbow lakes, are heaviest from June into September. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and the arrival of migrating ducks and geese. Fishing for crappie, bass, and bream is popular on Lake Chicot, especially on the upper end during spring and fall. Winter is mild by regional standards but wet, and hard freezes do occur. Duck season pulls hunters into the Delta from mid-November through late January, which tightens availability at some lodges and campgrounds even though general park visitation is at its lowest.

Roads into the Delta parks are generally flat and easy to tow, but shoulders can be soft after heavy rain. Sites at Lake Chicot include Class AAA options with water, 50-amp electric, and sewer hookups alongside more basic sites, and Moro Bay offers a mix of paved or gravel sites with water and electric. The maximum site length is 60 feet at Lake Chicot, but 55-foot rigs are more suitable as sites can be a tight squeeze. Cell coverage is reliable in Dumas and along US 65, but can be spotty deep inside wildlife refuges. Insects, humidity, and sun exposure are the main comfort issues. Bring repellent, screen tents, and shade. Levee roads and unpaved refuge access routes should be avoided by large motorhomes after rain. Grocery, fuel, and propane are readily available in Dumas, McGehee, and Lake Village.
