Fairfield Bay camping overview
Fairfield Bay sits on the north shore of Greers Ferry Lake in the Ozark foothills of north-central Arkansas, roughly halfway between Little Rock and the Missouri line. The lake covers about 40,000 acres with more than 300 miles of shoreline, so most camping in the area is water-oriented: fishing, boating, swimming, and lake-view sites. Van Buren Recreation Area anchors the local campground scene with electric and full-hookup sites on the water, while Fairfield Bay Eclipse Park, 1440 Dreamland, Golden Pond RV Park, and Phat Uncles at Sugarloaf give RV travelers a mix of resort-style, ATV-friendly, and quieter private options within a short drive. The town itself has a marina, two golf courses, restaurants, and a small grocery, so visitors do not have to travel far for supplies. The surrounding terrain is heavily wooded with red cedar, oak, and sweet gum, giving campsites shade in summer and strong color in fall.
Things to do near Fairfield Bay
The main draw is Greers Ferry Lake, which supports boating, swimming, water skiing, and year-round fishing for striped bass, walleye, crappie, and trout. Sugar Loaf Mountain Island, reachable by boat from the upper lake, has a National Recreation Trail that climbs about 500 feet above the water for wide views. On land, Fairfield Bay is known for a large network of UTV and ATV trails, plus hiking and mountain biking routes through the surrounding Ozark hills. The Little Red River below the dam, stocked from the Greers Ferry National Fish Hatchery, is a well-known trout fishery. In town, campers can access two golf courses, a marina, mini-golf, bowling, and the Indian Rock Cave and Museum.

The main camping season runs from spring through fall, with the busiest stretch between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Corps of Engineers parks around Greers Ferry Lake generally operate from spring into autumn, and several Corps campgrounds close entirely during the coldest months, so winter options narrow to a handful of year-round federal sites and private parks in and around Fairfield Bay. Spring brings the wettest weather and rapidly warming temperatures, along with strong bass fishing and green hillsides. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common; lakeside sites, shade, and hookups with 30 or 50 amp service for air conditioning become important. Fall is a strong shoulder season, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color through October and into early November. Winter is cool rather than harsh, with occasional freezes and only light snow in most years, making it workable for self-contained RVs willing to trade amenities for solitude.
How to book campgrounds near Fairfield Bay
Federally managed campgrounds on Greers Ferry Lake, run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, are reserved through Recreation.gov or by phone at 1-877-444-6777. Recreation.gov uses a rolling six-month booking window, with new dates released daily at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time, so summer holiday weekends open six months out and go quickly. Van Buren Recreation Area, operated by the City of Fairfield Bay in cooperation with the Corps, is typically booked through the city or its listed reservation partners rather than Recreation.gov, so check its operator listing before travel. Private parks in the area, including 1440 Dreamland, Fairfield Bay Eclipse Park, Golden Pond RV Park, and Phat Uncles at Sugarloaf, take reservations directly through their own websites or third-party platforms.
What to expect at Fairfield Bay campgrounds
Most developed campgrounds in the area offer 30 and 50 amp electric service, with water hookups common and full sewer sites available at private parks; central dump stations serve sites without sewer. Van Buren Recreation Area lists 33 sites with 30 and 50 amp service, water, a dump station, fire rings, long parking pads with picnic tables, plus 16 electric-only sites and limited primitive tent camping. Bath houses with flush toilets and showers are typical at Corps and city parks. Sites are generally wooded, and many carry direct lake views or short walks to the shore. Cell coverage is usable in and around Fairfield Bay but can drop in lower coves and along back roads, so download maps in advance.

They'll level the RV, connect hookups, walk you through the systems, and pick it up at the end of your stay. arkansas.com/things-to-do/scenic-bywaysHow much should I budget for fuel on a Fairfield Bay RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to plan for your Fairfield Bay RV trip. Travel trailers (towed by your truck or SUV) average 10 to 14 miles per gallon (mpg), Class B campervans get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A rigs around 7 to 10 mpg. Arkansas gas prices typically run below the national average, so fill-ups in Clinton or Heber Springs are friendly to the wallet. For a typical 3-night loop around Greers Ferry Lake (about 150 to 200 miles total), budget $60 to $120 in fuel for a mid-size motorhome. Pro tip: top off in Clinton on Highway 65, prices there often beat the smaller stations closer to Fairfield Bay.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Fairfield Bay?
For summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day) at Greers Ferry Lake Corps of Engineers campgrounds like Choctaw, JFK Park, and Cherokee, book 4 to 6 months ahead through Recreation.gov, which opens reservations on a rolling 6-month window. Spring and fall weekends fill 6 to 8 weeks out, and weekdays are often available just a week ahead. Private parks around Fairfield Bay, including Indian Hills RV Park, tend to be more flexible. Pro tip: if your first-choice site is booked, set a Recreation.gov alert, cancellations happen often, especially 2 to 3 weeks before holiday weekends. Pair the alert with a flexible RV rental in Fairfield Bay and you're golden.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2055What are driving conditions like around Fairfield Bay?
Driving around Fairfield Bay is genuinely enjoyable, even for first-timers. The main routes (Highway 65, Highway 16, and Highway 25) are well-maintained two-lane roads with gentle Ozark curves and light traffic outside summer holiday weekends. Watch for a few specific things: deer at dawn and dusk (especially on Highway 16 between Fairfield Bay and Shirley), occasional steep grades on the back roads toward Mountain View, and summer thunderstorms that can roll in fast. There are no significant low bridges or tunnels on the main routes, so even a tall Class A rental is fine. Pro tip: avoid driving the narrow lake roads near dusk and you'll have a smooth, stress-free Arkansas RV experience.

Full hookups (including sewer at the site) are easier to find at private parks like Indian Hills RV Park in Fairfield Bay itself. Most sites have a picnic table, fire ring, and paved or gravel pads. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss at lake campgrounds, but cell service on Verizon and AT&T is generally reliable. Pro tip: do a quick video walkaround of the RV with your host at both pickup and drop-off in Fairfield Bay, it documents the condition and makes the deposit release smooth and fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I dump tanks and fill fresh water near Fairfield Bay?
You've got several convenient dump and fill options near Fairfield Bay. The John F. Kennedy Park in Heber Springs (at the Greers Ferry Dam, about 25 miles south) has a public dump station and potable water fill open seasonally. Choctaw Campground also offers a dump station for registered campers. Indian Hills RV Park inside Fairfield Bay has full hookups at each site, so you can dump on departure. For boondockers, the city of Clinton (20 miles west) has a public dump near the visitor center. Pro tip: dump on your way out rather than mid-trip, it's faster and saves you from breaking camp twice during your Fairfield Bay RV trip.
