Camping near Hartman, Arkansas
Hartman sits in Johnson County in the Arkansas River Valley, between Clarksville and Ozark along Interstate 40. The town is a practical base for RV trips into the surrounding Ozark National Forest, the Mulberry River corridor to the north, and Lake Dardanelle to the southeast. Distances are short: most campgrounds in the area are within a thirty to sixty minute drive, and fuel, groceries, and dump stations are easy to find along the I-40 exits.
RV options nearby range from small-town, full-hookup parks to river-adjacent campgrounds with a rougher, outdoor feel. Grape Country RV Park and Dan's Riverview RV Park serve travelers who want serviced sites close to town, while Byrd's Adventure Center, Turner Bend Store Cabins and Campground, and Mulberry Mountain Campground put visitors closer to floating, hiking, and forest trailheads.
Expect a mix of private RV parks and forest-adjacent camps rather than a single flagship state or national park campground within the town limits.
Things to do around Hartman
The Mulberry River is the region's main draw. It is a designated National Wild and Scenic River with Class I to II rapids that supports canoeing, kayaking, and tubing when water levels cooperate. Turner Bend Store Cabins and Campground and Byrd's Adventure Center sit near the river and are common put-in and take-out points for float trips.
Hikers and off-road riders head to the Ozark National Forest for trails, waterfalls, and forest roads. Mulberry Mountain Campground is close to the Ozark Highlands Trail and hosts music and cycling events on its plateau. Lake Dardanelle, south of Hartman, offers bass fishing and boat ramps.
Closer to town, Johnson County wineries, Arkansas River overlooks, and small local museums fill an easy afternoon between camp days.

Traditional floating months on the Mulberry River run from late fall through June, with the biggest crowds in spring when water levels are most reliable. Byrd's Adventure Center and Turner Bend Store Cabins and Campground see heavy weekend traffic in April and May, so reserve river-adjacent sites well ahead for those dates, and check gauge readings before towing in, since the Mulberry can rise or fall quickly.
Summer is hot and humid, with river levels typically dropping by late June. RVers focus on shaded forest sites, lake swimming at Dardanelle, and early-morning hiking. Full-hookup sites at Grape Country RV Park and Dan's Riverview RV Park are useful when air conditioning matters.
Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color across the Ozarks from mid-October into early November, and Mulberry Mountain Campground is a popular fall-color base. Winter is cool and wet; some seasonal river camps reduce services, while in-town RV parks generally stay open.
How to book
Private parks around Hartman, including Grape Country RV Park, Dan's Riverview RV Park, Byrd's Adventure Center, Turner Bend Store Cabins and Campground, and Mulberry Mountain Campground, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Weekends in April, May, October, and any festival dates at Mulberry Mountain fill first, so book those windows well in advance.
Nearby public campgrounds in the Ozark National Forest and at Corps of Engineers sites on Lake Dardanelle are reserved through Recreation.gov, which uses a rolling six-month booking window. Arkansas State Parks use the state parks reservation portal. Cancellation windows and check-in times vary by operator, so confirm rig length limits, hookup type, and pet rules at the time of booking.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into the Mulberry River corridor along Highway 23 and Forest Service routes are paved but narrow and winding, with tight turns and low tree canopy in places. Larger rigs should plan a slower approach and confirm site access with the campground before arrival.
Cell coverage is patchy once off I-40 and inside the national forest. Download maps and reservation confirmations ahead of time. Sites at river camps are often gravel or grass, and heavy rain can affect access, so ask about conditions if a storm has just passed.
Black bears, ticks, and copperheads are present in the forest. Store food securely, use repellent, and watch children and pets around riverbanks where currents change with water levels.

Yes, interstate travel is allowed on your RV rental Arkansas trip, and Hartman's location on Interstate 40 makes it a launchpad for multi-state adventures. Popular routes include heading west to Oklahoma's Talimena Scenic Drive (about 2 hours), north to Branson, Missouri (3 hours), or east toward Memphis, Tennessee (3.5 hours). Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage stops at the border. Cross-border travel into Canada requires host approval, and it's a long haul from Arkansas. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on my Hartman RV trip?
Fuel is one of the bigger trip expenses, but Arkansas keeps it manageable since gas prices here are consistently among the lowest in the country. Travel trailers towed by a half-ton truck typically get 10 to 14 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs run closer to 7 to 9 MPG. For a 300-mile weekend loop around the Arkansas River Valley in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Fill up in Clarksville or Ozark where stations along Interstate 40 are easy to access with a big rig. Pro tip: GasBuddy is invaluable for finding the cheapest pump on your route.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Hartman?
For the best campgrounds near Hartman, plan ahead: state parks like Lake Dardanelle and Mount Magazine open reservations up to 13 months in advance, and weekends from April through October fill quickly. Book through ArkansasStateParks.com for state sites and Recreation.gov for Ozark National Forest spots like Horsehead Lake and Cove Lake. For peak fall foliage weekends in late October, lock in your site 3 to 6 months out. For midweek summer trips, 2 to 4 weeks is usually plenty. Insider tip: Spadra Park in Clarksville is first-come, first-served and rarely fills up midweek, making it a reliable backup for spontaneous Arkansas River Valley getaways.
arkansasstateparks.com/parks/mount-magazine-state-parkWhat are driving conditions like around Hartman?

Interstate 40 is the main artery, with wide lanes, generous shoulders, and gentle grades through the Arkansas River Valley. The main thing to watch for: summer thunderstorms can roll in fast with gusty crosswinds, so check the National Weather Service forecast before long drives.
