Campgrounds and RV parks near Hazen, AR

Mike Freeze Wattensaw WMA borders Hazen to the north, with Wattensaw Bayou running west to east through the northern part of the area before emptying into the White River. Access to the west side is from Highway 11 off the I-40 exit at Hazen, with one road 1.5 miles north of the exit and another 3 miles north. The roughly 19,750-acre area holds hardwood forest for deer and turkey hunting, open fields, small lakes and ponds for fishing, and gentle terrain for walking, with especially scenic stretches along the White River on the eastern edge. About an hour southeast, Bayou Meto WMA was created in 1948 and is internationally known as a prime waterfowl hunting area, covering 33,832 acres of flooded timber between Stuttgart and Pine Bluff. Farther south, the Dale Bumpers White River National Wildlife Refuge is the nation's largest contiguous block of bottomland hardwood forest under single ownership, covers nearly 160,000 acres in southeast Arkansas, and holds the state's only native population of black bears.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel through the Arkansas Delta. Days are mild, humidity is manageable, and the surrounding bottomlands are at their most active for wildlife watching. Spring storms are common, and heavy rains can flood low-lying roads and campsites near the White River. Summers are long, hot, and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and heavy mosquito pressure in the bottomlands. Insect repellent is a necessity on Wattensaw WMA and other bottomland areas. Sites with shade and full hookups for air conditioning are worth prioritizing from June through August. Fall and winter drive most of the region's tourism, largely tied to hunting. Bayou Meto is known as a winter-habitat wonderland of flooded timber, and Stuttgart's duck season brings heavy demand for RV sites from November into late January. Camping at some sites in the White River refuge is limited to March through December, and high water can close primitive access at other times.

Hazen is a small farming town, and most RV parks in the immediate area are utilitarian: level pads, full hookups, easy interstate access, and limited on-site amenities. Restaurants, fuel, and groceries are clustered near the I-40 exits, and larger services are in Stuttgart, Brinkley, or Little Rock. Expect flat terrain, agricultural surroundings, and long sightlines across rice fields. Cell coverage is generally solid along I-40 but can weaken inside the wildlife management areas and river bottoms. Roads on public land can be rough or seasonally closed, with non-graveled routes on Wattensaw WMA closed to travel. Mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers are a real factor from spring through fall, and venomous snakes are present in the bottomlands. Standard repellent, closed footwear, and awareness while walking off pavement are the norm.
