Camping near Johnson, Arkansas
Johnson is a small city in Washington County, Arkansas, sitting between Fayetteville and Springdale in the heart of Northwest Arkansas. The area is part of the Ozark Mountains region, and campgrounds here put RV travelers within short drives of the University of Arkansas, downtown Fayetteville, the Razorback Greenway, and the shoreline of Beaver Lake to the east.
RV travelers usually choose between private full-hookup parks close to town and Corps of Engineers campgrounds along Beaver Lake, which has 449 miles of shoreline in the White River Basin. Closer-in options include Southgate RV Park of Fayetteville, The Creeks Golf and RV Resort, Hog Valley RV and Treehouse Resort, Monte Ne RV Park, and NWA Hideaway.
The climate is humid subtropical, with warm, active summers and cool to cold winters. Most private parks in the Johnson area stay open year-round, while federal lakeside campgrounds run on a spring-through-fall recreation season.
Things to do near Johnson
Water recreation anchors most trips. Beaver Lake has more than 28,000 surface acres, with largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, bream, white bass, stripers, and catfish, while the cold tailwater below the dam holds rainbow and brown trout. Marinas around the lake offer boat rentals, fuel, and fishing guides.
Land-based options are just as strong. Devil's Den State Park south of Fayetteville offers hiking and horseback trails, and Coler Mountain Bike Preserve in Bentonville is a short drive north. Families often pair a campground stay with the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the University of Arkansas campus, and the Fayetteville and Bentonville square farmers markets.
Cyclists can ride the paved Razorback Regional Greenway, which links Fayetteville, Johnson, Springdale, Rogers, and Bentonville.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in Northwest Arkansas. April, May, September, and October bring moderate highs and lower humidity, along with dogwood blooms in spring and hardwood color in mid to late October. Spring is also the wettest stretch of the year: May is the wettest month, averaging about 153 mm or 6.0 inches, and severe thunderstorms are common through the season.
Summer is hot and humid, with July averaging near 90 degrees Fahrenheit and heat indices often higher. Weekends on Beaver Lake fill quickly around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day, so early booking matters. The Northwest Arkansas motorcycle rally in early October also tightens lodging across the region.
Winter is the quiet season. Snowfall is light, averaging around 7 inches a year, with most events between December and early March. Some lakeside campgrounds close or reduce services, while most private RV parks in Johnson and Fayetteville stay open with hookups.

Scott was great to work with and adjusted our last minute add on date. Very communicative and would recommend booking with him again. RV was great, well maintained, clean and perfect for our family too getaway for vacation. Would definitely book him again in the future!

We stayed over Memorial Day weekend with our family and had the BEST experience! We rented an RV for 3 adults and 3 kids, and it was the perfect size with plenty of room for everyone. Everything was super clean and fully stocked — pillows, bedding, and honestly anything you could possibly need was included. But our absolute favorite part was the outdoor kitchen. I genuinely don’t think we can ever rent an RV again without one now! The griddle was AMAZING and made cooking so easy and fun. We’ve officially become bougie RV campers now. 😂 Could not have asked for a better stay. Highly recommend!

Amazing trip in the RV owned by Jesus! He was a great host/owner and was super easy to work with. If we can make it to AR again, we'll definitely connect/reach out to him!

How to book a campsite
Private parks near Johnson, including Southgate RV Park of Fayetteville, The Creeks Golf and RV Resort, Hog Valley RV and Treehouse Resort, Monte Ne RV Park, and NWA Hideaway, take reservations directly on their websites or by phone. Full hookups, longer big-rig sites, and pull-through spots go first, especially during University of Arkansas home football weekends and the Northwest Arkansas motorcycle rally.
For federal campgrounds on Beaver Lake, reservations run through Recreation.gov. Beaver Lake has 11 campgrounds, and to make, modify, or cancel a reservation, use a Recreation.gov account or call 1-877-444-6777.
Check-in at Beaver Lake campgrounds is 4:00 p.m. on the day incoming reservations start, and check-out is 1:00 p.m.
What to expect on the ground
Private parks in and around Johnson typically offer level pads with 30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, and laundry. Terrain is rolling, so pull-throughs are the easiest fit for larger motorhomes and towables.
Beaver Lake campgrounds are more rustic. Sites are large with shade and room for activities, and amenities include fire rings, picnic areas, drinking water, and flush toilets. Cell service can be spotty in the coves and along the White River tailwater.
Storms move through quickly in spring and summer, so awnings should be stowed when leaving the rig. Ticks and chiggers are active from spring through early fall, and biting insects peak near the lake at dusk. Raccoons will raid unsecured coolers and trash, so food should stay inside the RV overnight.
