Campgrounds near Knoxville, Arkansas
Knoxville sits in the Arkansas River Valley in Johnson County, just off Interstate 40 between Clarksville and Russellville. The town works as a practical base for RV travelers heading to Lake Dardanelle in the Arkansas River Valley, the Ozark National Forest to the north, and the Ouachita foothills to the south. Most named campgrounds fall within a 30-mile radius, making day trips easy.
The closest developed public campground is Russellville - Lake Dardanelle State Park, on the 34,300-acre reservoir on the Arkansas River. Mount Nebo State Park sits on a flat-topped mountain southwest of Dardanelle, offering elevation and cooler summer temperatures, but strict length limits apply on the access road. Private options in the area include Mission RV Park and Whispering Springs Retreat, Arkansas, while Xtreme Paintball and Laser Tag Eclipse Park adds a family activity stop.
Interstate 40 provides the main east-west corridor, and Highway 7 heads south toward Hot Springs. RV travelers should note that fuel and grocery availability is best in Russellville and Clarksville.
Things to do near Knoxville
Lake Dardanelle drives most outdoor recreation in the area. Lake-based activities include boating, bass fishing and tournaments, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, a swimming beach, hiking, guided nature programs, biking, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. The Russellville - Lake Dardanelle State Park visitor center features exhibits, five aquariums, and the Lakeview Room meeting facility, and hosts a Sport Fishing Weigh-in Pavilion used for tournaments.
Mount Nebo State Park offers around 32.6 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, panoramic overlooks along the Rim Trail, and a seasonal swimming pool. The park is a certified Trail of Tears National Historic Trail Site. Families looking for a break from nature can stop at Xtreme Paintball and Laser Tag Eclipse Park for organized play. Nearby Petit Jean State Park and the Mount Magazine area add waterfalls, scenic drives, and additional trail networks within an hour's drive.

The Arkansas River Valley has a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers, mild winters, and rain spread across the year. Spring is the wettest stretch, with May averaging the most precipitation, and thunderstorms and tornado watches are common from March through May. Rivers and lake levels can rise quickly during heavy spring rains, so low-lying lakeside sites may see temporary closures.
Summer brings high humidity and afternoon highs often in the 90s Fahrenheit. Mount Nebo, rising 1,350 feet above the Arkansas River Valley, stays noticeably cooler and is a popular summer retreat. Fall is often the most comfortable camping season, with lower humidity, warm days, and reduced rainfall through September and October.
Winter is mild but variable. Mount Nebo remains open year-round with bathhouse facilities available throughout the year, and Lake Dardanelle State Park likewise operates through the winter, though occasional ice storms can affect mountain access. RV travelers heading to Mount Nebo in winter should check road conditions before climbing the switchbacks.
How to book campsites
Arkansas state park campgrounds, including Lake Dardanelle and Mount Nebo, are reserved through the official Arkansas State Parks reservation system at reserve.arkansasstateparks.com. Reservations can be made online, over the phone, or at a park's visitor center up to one year in advance. At the time of reservation, the camper is charged a non-refundable, non-discounted deposit of one night's full camping fee per site, and campsites will not be rented to the same guest in excess of fourteen days during a thirty-day period.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Lake Dardanelle, which are separate from the state park, are booked through Recreation.gov, where reservation windows typically open six months in advance and peak-season weekends fill early.
Private parks such as Mission RV Park and Whispering Springs Retreat, Arkansas take direct bookings by phone or through their own websites. Check-in and check-out at Arkansas State Parks are both set at 3:00 p.m.
What to expect on the ground
Russellville - Lake Dardanelle State Park offers a mix of site classes. There are 57 campsites in the Russellville area (16 Class AAA, 14 Class AA, and 27 Class B) with 18 Class B sites in the Dardanelle area, plus a boat launch, dump station, and large visitor center. Sites accommodate most RV lengths, and the campground stays open year-round.
Mount Nebo State Park has 34 campsites, including 24 Class B and 10 hike-in tent sites, with water and 30-amp electric on the Class B sites. There is no dump station at the park, and the access road features 11 switchbacks and grades up to 18 percent, restricting entry to RVs and campers 24 feet or shorter. Sites along the rim are known for the best valley views.
Cell coverage is generally reliable along the I-40 corridor and at Lake Dardanelle but can be weaker in the surrounding forest.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Knoxville, AR?
RV rental in Knoxville, AR is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Arkansas River Valley. On RVezy, most travel trailers book from about $90-$150 per night and Class C motorhomes typically run $150-$250 per night, with prices easing in late fall and winter and peaking around Bassmaster tournament weekends at nearby Lake Dardanelle. To find a cheap RV rental Knoxville families love, filter by travel trailers (they tow behind your own vehicle and skip the big motorhome premium) and ask hosts about weekly discounts. Pro tip: booking midweek for a Petit Jean or Mount Magazine trip can save you 15-20% versus weekend rates.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Knoxville%2C%20ArkansasWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Knoxville, AR?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Knoxville, AR. Arkansas does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement for the motorhomes or travel trailers listed on RVezy. Approved renters are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow, so there is nothing extra to mail or upload at pickup. Visiting from another country? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. Most first-time renters heading to Lake Dardanelle are surprised how quickly they are cleared to drive.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Knoxville, AR protected if something goes wrong?
Yes. Every RV rental in Knoxville, AR booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 64 or I-40 with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level at checkout (it is not set by the host), so you can match it to how adventurous your Arkansas River Valley itinerary feels. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it is designed specifically for peer-to-peer RV rentals and removes the biggest worry most first-timers have. Pick your level, pack the cooler, and point the RV toward Petit Jean.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Knoxville RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets a clear, guest-friendly cancellation policy on every reservation (hosts do not define this themselves), and the exact terms that apply to your trip appear during checkout and in your booking confirmation. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds eligible guests or provides credits so your Knoxville RV trip stays on track. You can lock in that Lake Dardanelle weekend now and finalize the details closer to your trip with confidence. Pro tip: review the cancellation terms on your confirmation right after booking so you know your refund window.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Knoxville, AR?
Absolutely. Pet-friendly RV rental Knoxville options are easy to find on RVezy: toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page to see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) right in the listing. Once you are on the road, leashed pets are welcome at Lake Dardanelle State Park campsites, on trails at Mount Nebo State Park, and around the day-use areas of Petit Jean State Park. Pack a tie-out, a collapsible water bowl, and proof of rabies vaccination. Pro tip: the shaded loops on the Russellville side of Lake Dardanelle stay cooler in summer, which dogs love.
arkansasstateparks.com/parks/lake-dardanelle-state-parkCan I get RV delivery in Knoxville, AR instead of picking it up?
Yes, RV delivery Knoxville is one of the most popular options for first-timers, especially if you are nervous about towing a trailer down I-40 yourself. Many RVezy hosts in the Russellville and Clarksville area will deliver to your campsite at Lake Dardanelle State Park, Piney Bay, or Shoal Bay, level the RV, hook up water and 30/50-amp power, and walk you through everything before they leave. Use the Delivery filter when you search, then message the host to confirm the destination and any per-mile delivery fee. Pro tip: delivery to Petit Jean State Park is a favorite because the mountain road is steeper than it looks.
arkansasstateparks.com/parks/petit-jean-state-parkHow far can I drive on a Knoxville RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have plenty of road to roam. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy on the listing, and on a Knoxville RV trip you will find everything from generous daily allowances to RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for longer Ozark loops. From Knoxville you are roughly 25 miles to Lake Dardanelle, 45 miles to Mount Magazine (Arkansas's highest point), 60 miles to Mount Nebo, 90 miles to the Buffalo National River, and about 100 miles to Hot Springs National Park. Check the listing's mileage section before booking, and if you are planning a big loop, message the host about extra-mile packages.
nps.gov/buff/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Knoxville, AR for an RV?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to the best campgrounds near Knoxville, AR. Top picks include Lake Dardanelle State Park in Russellville (lakeside hookup sites on a 34,300-acre reservoir, split between the Russellville and Dardanelle areas), Piney Bay Campground on the Ozark side of Lake Dardanelle (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, electric sites and a boat ramp), Shoal Bay Park near London (lakefront sites with electric and water), Mount Nebo State Park (mountaintop sites with sunset views and tight switchbacks on the climb up), and Petit Jean State Park (water and electric sites near Cedar Falls). Pro tip: book a Class AAA full-hookup site on the Russellville side for the easiest setup.
arkansasstateparks.com/parks/lake-dardanelle-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Knoxville, AR?
The sweet spot for RV camping Knoxville travelers love is mid-March through late May and again from mid-September through early November, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65-80°F range and humidity is lower. Summer (June-August) is hot and humid with highs in the low 90s, but it is prime lake season, so book an RV with strong air conditioning and plan morning hikes. Winters are mild for the region, with highs around 50°F and only occasional ice storms, meaning many RVezy hosts keep their rigs available year-round. Pro tip: late October at Mount Magazine offers stunning Ozark fall color and light crowds.
weather.gov/lzk/I've never rented an RV before. Will I know what to do?
You will be in great shape, even on your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup (or at your campsite if you choose delivery), covering how to level the RV, hook up to shore power, fill fresh water, use the propane stove, and dump tanks at the end of your trip. You can message your host with questions before, during, and after your trip, and RVezy's support team is available in the app. Pro tip: ask your host for a short phone video of the dump-station process so you can replay it later at Lake Dardanelle.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002336494-RentersWhat happens if my RV breaks down on my Knoxville trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on I-40 near Lamar, a dead battery at Piney Bay, or a lockout at the trailhead is just a phone call away. Help can be dispatched anywhere in Arkansas, whether you are on the highway or on a county road heading to Mount Magazine. Your host is also a great first call for quirks specific to their RV. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number to your phone before you leave Knoxville, since cell signal can dip in the Ozarks.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Knoxville RV rental to other states or across the border?
Yes, an RV road trip from Knoxville opens up the whole region. Most RVezy hosts allow travel throughout the lower 48 (always confirm on the listing or via message), so popular routes include Hot Springs National Park (about 100 miles south), Branson, MO (about 200 miles north), Memphis, TN (about 230 miles east), and the Buffalo National River (about 90 miles north). Travel into Canada may be possible with some hosts; travel into Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage stops at the border. Pro tip: message the host with your full route before booking so everyone is on the same page.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for a motorhome rental Knoxville trip?
Budgeting is straightforward. For a motorhome rental Knoxville travelers commonly choose, plan on roughly 8-10 miles per gallon for a Class A, 10-14 MPG for a Class C, and 18-22 MPG for a Class B campervan. Travel trailers do not burn their own fuel but will drop your tow vehicle's MPG by 25-40%. Arkansas regularly has some of the lowest gas prices in the U.S., and you will find easy fill-ups along I-40 in Russellville, Clarksville, and Ozark. Pro tip: top off in Russellville before climbing Mount Nebo or Petit Jean, where the grades eat fuel and stations are scarce.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground for my Knoxville RV trip?
Plan ahead and you will have your pick of sites. Arkansas State Parks (including Lake Dardanelle, Mount Nebo, and Petit Jean) open reservations up to 13 months in advance through the Arkansas State Parks reservation system, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds like Piney Bay and Old Post Road book through Recreation.gov up to six months out. For spring break, Memorial Day, and Bassmaster tournament weekends, aim to reserve 3-6 months ahead. For shoulder-season weekdays, two weeks is usually plenty. Pro tip: the Dardanelle side of Lake Dardanelle State Park tends to book up later than the Russellville side, making it a solid backup for last-minute weekends.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Knoxville, AR?
Driving here is refreshingly relaxed compared with big-city RV trips. Knoxville sits right off I-40 between Clarksville and Russellville, with wide lanes, gentle grades, and light traffic outside of weekday rush hours in Russellville. Watch for crosswinds on the I-40 bridges over the Arkansas River and the steep, twisty climbs up Mount Nebo (Highway 155) and Petit Jean (Highway 154), which require low gears in a motorhome. Summer thunderstorms can roll through fast, so check radar before driving. Pro tip: avoid Highway 7 north of Russellville after dark in a big rig, as it is a curvy, deer-heavy Ozark road.
idrivearkansas.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Knoxville, AR?
You will find solid infrastructure almost everywhere you camp. Lake Dardanelle State Park offers 30/50-amp electric, water hookups, hot showers, flush toilets, and an RV dump station (full hookups available at Class AAA sites on the Russellville side). Corps of Engineers parks like Piney Bay and Old Post Road typically have water and electric plus shared dump stations. Cell service is generally good, but Wi-Fi is rare, so plan to use your phone's hotspot. Need to dump or refill water on the road? Most Pilot and Love's truck stops along I-40 in Russellville and Ozark have RV lanes. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose, since spigot placement varies by site.
arkansasstateparks.com/parks/lake-dardanelle-state-parkWhat features come standard in a campervan rental Knoxville hosts offer?
Most rigs are road-trip ready out of the gate. A typical campervan rental Knoxville guests book on RVezy includes a sleeping area for 2-4, a small kitchen with sink, fridge, and propane cooktop, a portable or built-in toilet, fresh and gray water tanks, house batteries, and seatbelts for travel. Larger Class C motorhomes and travel trailers add full bathrooms with showers, queen beds, dinettes that convert to extra sleeping, roof-mounted air conditioning, furnaces, and often a TV with an outdoor speaker. Generators and Wi-Fi hotspots are common upgrades. Every RVezy listing spells out exactly what is included, so you can match the rig to your Lake Dardanelle plans.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Knoxville%2C%20ArkansasWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for when I rent an RV in Knoxville?
When you rent an RV in Knoxville, AR, take a minute to browse the host's add-ons section. Popular extras include camping chairs and tables ($10-$25), bedding and towel packages ($25-$50), generators for off-grid sites ($25-$50/day), bike racks, kayak and SUP carriers, and stocked kitchen kits. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a nearby meeting point in Knoxville, Clarksville, or Russellville, and many hosts offer delivery to Lake Dardanelle or Petit Jean for a per-mile fee. Listings clearly show the daily mileage allowance and the per-mile rate beyond it. Pro tip: a generator is worth it if you are heading to Mount Magazine, where some sites are electric-free.
arkansasstateparks.com/parks/mount-magazine-state-parkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental Arkansas getaway through RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, so no cash changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held (not charged) on your card before pickup and released after the trip, assuming the RV returns in the same condition. To keep things smooth: complete the pre-trip walkthrough with your host, take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior, follow the mileage and generator-hour limits on the listing, and return the RV with fuel and tanks as agreed. That is it. Hit the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV in Knoxville, AR for an overnight stop?
Knoxville sits in a sweet spot for overnight RV parking. The closest dedicated RV camping is about 20-25 miles east at Lake Dardanelle State Park (Russellville and Dardanelle sides), and Piney Bay Corps of Engineers Campground is roughly 15 miles west near London. For a quick overnight stop, several truck stops along I-40 (Pilot and Love's in Russellville, Clarksville, and Ozark) commonly allow self-contained RVs to stay overnight, and Walmart overnight parking varies by store, so always call ahead. Dispersed camping on Ozark National Forest land north of Knoxville is also an option for self-contained rigs. Pro tip: use the Recreation.gov app to find dispersed sites along Highway 21 and 23.
