Campgrounds and RV parks near Melbourne, AR

Fishing is the main draw. The White River tailwater below Bull Shoals and Norfork dams produces rainbow and trophy brown trout year-round, and Crown Lake, Spring River, and the North Fork add bass, walleye, crappie, and catfish. Guided float trips run out of most river resorts. Blanchard Springs Caverns, roughly an hour southwest near Fifty-Six, offers the Dripstone, Discovery, and Wild Cave tours and is the only tourist cave owned by the U.S. Forest Service. The surrounding Sylamore District has swimming holes on North Sylamore Creek, the 22-mile North Sylamore hiking trail, and about 50 miles of the Syllamo Mountain Bike Trail, an IMBA Epic loop network. Mountain View, about 30 miles south, hosts the Ozark Folk Center State Park with live traditional music and craft demonstrations.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel. April and May bring wildflowers, running creeks, and paddling conditions on smaller streams, though April is typically the wettest month and low-water crossings and gravel forest roads can flood after storms. Late September through October delivers cooler nights, drier weather, and hardwood color across the Ozark ridges. Summer is hot and humid, with highs pushing into the upper 80s and 90s and afternoon thunderstorms common. Lake swimming, tubing, and trout floats stay popular, but book weekend sites well in advance and expect heavier crowds at Blanchard Springs and river access points. Trout fishing on the White River tailwater remains strong through the heat. Winter is mild by northern standards but hard freezes are routine, with January lows near 30°F. Some public campgrounds shut off water and reduce services from late fall into early spring, while private resorts along Crown Lake and the White River generally stay open year-round.

Roads into Melbourne are two-lane state highways through rolling terrain. Highway 5, Highway 9, and Highway 69 handle most RV traffic; drivers of longer rigs should watch for tight switchbacks and steep grades on secondary roads into river access points and forest campgrounds. Cell coverage is patchy in the hollows and along the White River canyon. Groceries, fuel, propane, and basic RV supplies are available in Melbourne, Mountain View, and Horseshoe Bend, but selection thins quickly outside those towns, so top up before heading into the national forest. Expect a mix of full-hookup lakeside resorts and rustic, no-hookup forest sites. Ticks and chiggers are active from spring through early fall, black bears are present but rarely a problem, and river levels can rise fast during generation releases from upstream dams, so check flow schedules before wading or launching.
