Campgrounds near Mountainburg
Mountainburg sits in Crawford County in the Boston Mountain range of the Ozarks, along US Highway 71 between Fort Smith and Fayetteville. The surrounding area gives RV travelers direct access to two of northwest Arkansas's most-used state parks, along with a mix of privately operated RV parks close to Interstate 49.
Lake Fort Smith State Park sits in the Boston Mountain Valley of the Ozarks about eight miles north of Mountainburg, along the shores of Lake Fort Smith, a scenic reservoir that provides drinking water to the Fort Smith area. About thirty minutes north, Devil's Den State Park sits deep in a valley of the rugged Boston Mountains of northwest Arkansas with spectacular Ozark scenery.
For travelers who prefer private parks with full hookups, Eagle Crest Golf & RV Park in nearby Alma, Pathfinder RV Resort, and Crabtree RV Park round out the options within a short drive of town. The mix of state-park camping and private RV parks makes the Mountainburg area workable for both weekend trips and longer Ozark tours.
Things to do around Mountainburg
Hiking and paddling anchor most trips. Lake Fort Smith State Park offers fishing, paddling, hiking, and mountain biking, and serves as the western terminus of the Ozark Highlands Trail. Lake activities include fishing for bass, catfish, and bream, with a marina offering boat rentals, and a seasonal swimming pool operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
At Devil's Den, the trail network is the main draw. The park has approximately 64 miles of trails open to hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, with 20 miles designated as horse trails. An impressive rock dam spans Lee Creek forming Lake Devil, an 8-acre lake for fishing, and hiking options include the Yellow Rock Trail with its view of Lee Creek Valley and the 15-mile Butterfield Hiking Trail.
Golfers can play the course at Eagle Crest, and the surrounding Ozark National Forest adds backroad driving, dispersed recreation, and stream fishing to the mix.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel here. Spring brings mild days, wildflowers, and events like the Ozark Mountain Bike Festival at Devil's Den, though May is the wettest month and thunderstorms are common. Fall delivers cool nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color across the Boston Mountains, which drives peak weekend demand at the state parks.
Summer is hot and humid, with daily highs near ninety. Lake Fort Smith's swimming pool and marina are in full operation, and the pool at Devil's Den runs Memorial Day through Labor Day. Canoe and pedal boat rentals are available on Lake Devil during the warm season.
Winter camping is possible but stripped down. Both parks remain open year-round for camping and day use, though some restrooms and bathhouses are closed during the colder months. Self-contained RVs fare best in December through February, and dump stations remain accessible for campers who tolerate the cooler temperatures and occasional freezes.

We stayed over Memorial Day weekend with our family and had the BEST experience! We rented an RV for 3 adults and 3 kids, and it was the perfect size with plenty of room for everyone. Everything was super clean and fully stocked — pillows, bedding, and honestly anything you could possibly need was included. But our absolute favorite part was the outdoor kitchen. I genuinely don’t think we can ever rent an RV again without one now! The griddle was AMAZING and made cooking so easy and fun. We’ve officially become bougie RV campers now. 😂 Could not have asked for a better stay. Highly recommend!

Great experience. Tina is very kind. Done exactly what she said she would do. Trailer was well stocked. Driver explained in detail to my son everything he needed to know about the trailers sewer & water. If you are thinking of renting a trailer for a family member from out of state don’t hesitate. We had a great weekend and my son’s family had a great place to rest.

How to book campgrounds near Mountainburg
Arkansas State Parks uses a single central reservation system for both Lake Fort Smith and Devil's Den. Reservations can be made up to twelve months in advance at reserve.arkansasstateparks.com, or by calling the individual park office. Same-day reservations are available, and weekend stays require a minimum of two nights, with a three-night minimum on holiday weekends including Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
Cancellation and stay rules are set at the system level. A non-refundable deposit equal to the first night's rate plus tax is charged at the time of booking, and campsites are limited to fourteen rental nights within a thirty-day period.
Private parks including Eagle Crest Golf & RV Park, Pathfinder RV Resort, and Crabtree RV Park book directly through the operator; weekends and holiday periods sell out first.
