Campgrounds and RV parks near Pangburn, AR

Trout fishing dominates the trip list. Beginning below Greers Ferry Dam, the Little Red River provides excellent trout habitat for roughly 30 miles downstream, and the river once held the world record brown trout, a 40-pound, 4-ounce fish caught in 1992. The Little Red is considered a Blue Ribbon fishing stream, with rainbow and brown trout, spotted, rock and smallmouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, and chain pickerel available to paddler-anglers. Wade access points sit within easy driving range. Public spots include JFK Park below the dam, Cow Shoals, Mossy Shoals, Libby Shoals, and the Pangburn Bridge area. Free boat launches are available at Winkley Bridge (Barnett access), Lobo access, Dripping Springs, Ramsey access east of Pangburn, and below the dam near the trout hatchery. Beyond fishing, Greers Ferry Lake offers swimming, boating, and hiking, and the town of Heber Springs adds restaurants, marinas, and a visitor center.

The Little Red is a tailwater fed by cold releases from Greers Ferry Dam, so trout fishing runs year-round. Fall is a headline season for anglers because the brown trout spawning run occurs from mid-October through November, and cooler air makes long days on the water more comfortable. Spring brings the wettest weather of the year, with May typically the peak rainfall month and frequent thunderstorm activity. Water releases from the dam can spike quickly during and after storms, so campers should check generation schedules before wading or floating. Summer is hot and humid, drawing families to Greers Ferry Lake for swimming and boating; campgrounds along the river fill on weekends. Winter is mild by regional standards, with only a few inches of snow in an average year and highs generally in the upper 40s Fahrenheit. Many Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Greers Ferry Lake operate on a seasonal schedule, so off-season travelers should confirm which loops remain open before arrival.

Sites near the river tend to be wooded and rustic, with trout docks offering basic hookups, boat access, and bait shops. Lake campgrounds run by the Corps of Engineers offer more developed facilities, including electric sites, dump stations, and swim beaches. Cell service is patchy in the river valley and along backroads between Pangburn and the dam. Water levels on the Little Red change with dam releases and can rise several feet within an hour. Wade access depends on water level and generation, so anglers should confirm release status before entering the river. Life jackets are strongly recommended anytime near the water. Expect quiet weeknights and busy weekends from spring through fall. Bring insect repellent for summer, waders and layers for winter trout trips, and a shade plan for open lake sites.
