Campgrounds and RV parks near Tumbling Shoals, AR

Trout fishing is the headline activity. The Little Red offers about 29 miles of ideal trout habitat below Greers Ferry Dam at Heber Springs, and the river produced the former world-record brown trout of 40 pounds, 4 ounces. Anglers wade at JFK Park, Cow Shoals, and Barnett Access (Swinging Bridge), or float the river by drift boat between dam releases. Water levels change quickly when the dam generates, so check release schedules with the Corps of Engineers before wading. On Greers Ferry Lake, RVers can boat, swim, water-ski, and fish for striped bass, walleye, and bream. Sugar Loaf Mountain National Recreation Trail, on an island in the lake, is a popular short hike, and the trout hatchery next to JFK Park offers self-guided tours. The William Carl Garner Visitor Center near the dam covers the project's history and is a good rainy-day stop.

Camping demand peaks Memorial Day through Labor Day, when lakeside Corps parks fill on weekends and holidays. Spring is the wettest stretch, with frequent thunderstorms and rising lake levels that can affect waterfront sites, so RVers should watch forecasts during heavy rain events and be ready to move off low-lying pads if Greers Ferry rises quickly. Fall is the quieter, more comfortable season for RV travel. The brown trout spawning run occurs from mid-October through November, making these especially good times to fish the Little Red. Several Corps parks close for winter and reopen in spring. Facilities such as Old Highway 25 and Shiloh operate only from mid-May through mid-September, while year-round camping is available at select locations including Heber Springs and John F. Kennedy campgrounds. Winters are mild but damp, with brief cold snaps and only occasional snow. Private RV parks in the Heber Springs area generally stay open year-round.

Sites on the Little Red River sit in a shaded river valley framed by limestone bluffs and a forest of hardwoods and pines. Cold water released from the depths of Greers Ferry Lake keeps the river valley cool and often misty, so expect cooler air near the water even on hot afternoons, and plan for sudden flow changes when the dam generates. Corps lake parks generally offer paved pads, electric hookups at most sites, dump stations, showers, and boat ramps; full sewer hookups are more common at private parks in town. Cell coverage is generally reliable around Heber Springs but can drop in coves and on river-bottom sites. Roads into lake parks are paved but include grades and tight turns, so larger Class A rigs should scout before committing to back-in sites. Bring insect repellent in summer and layers for cool river mornings in spring and fall.
