Campgrounds and RV parks near Heber, CA

The Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, known to off-roaders as Glamis, is the headline draw east of Heber along Highway 78. It is one of the largest OHV destinations in the country and a major draw on holiday weekends. Salton Sea State Recreation Area, about an hour north on the sea's northeastern shore, offers birding along the Pacific Flyway, fishing, and 14 miles of shoreline. Sunbeam Lake, just west of El Centro, is a small reservoir with day-use picnic areas and a swim beach. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is about 90 minutes northwest for hiking, wildflower viewing, and dark-sky stargazing. Closer to town, families can visit the Imperial Valley Desert Museum in Ocotillo and the Pioneers Museum on Highway 111.

The Imperial Valley operates on a snowbird calendar. The high season runs from roughly late October through April, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 60s to 80s Fahrenheit and the private RV parks around Heber fill with long-term winter residents. Reservations during this window, especially around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the Presidents Day weekend, should be made well in advance, and many parks offer weekly and monthly rates that book out months ahead. Summer is the opposite story. From June through September, daytime highs routinely exceed 105 degrees Fahrenheit and overnight lows often stay above 80. Many private parks remain open year-round but run at low occupancy, and visitors should plan on continuous air conditioning, shaded sites where available, and a well-maintained RV cooling system. The North American Monsoon can also push humidity and brief thunderstorms into the valley in July and August. Spring and fall shoulder seasons offer the best balance of warm days, mild nights, and easier availability.

Heber and the surrounding Imperial Valley are working agricultural country, not a scenic destination in the traditional sense. Expect flat farmland, irrigation canals, citrus and alfalfa fields, and long straight roads. The closest full-service shopping, fuel, hospitals, and big-box stores are in El Centro, a short drive north. Most RV parks in the area are tailored to extended stays and run quiet, adult-oriented operations with pools, laundry, and clubhouses; pet rules and age restrictions vary, so confirm with the park before booking. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the Interstate 8 corridor and weakens in the dunes and around the Salton Sea. Border Patrol checkpoints are common on highways leaving the valley north and west, so allow extra time and keep ID accessible.
