The headline attraction east of town is the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, one of the most popular off-highway-vehicle areas in the United States, drawing more than 1.2 million visitors a year. West of Imperial, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park covers more than 600,000 acres of slot canyons, washes, ridges, and caves, with primitive camping areas, paid campgrounds, and the adjoining Ocotillo Wells off-road vehicle area, plus a wildflower bloom that typically peaks in spring. To the north, the Salton Sea State Recreation Area offers boating, kayaking, and bird-watching along the inland sea, which sits on the Pacific Flyway with more than 400 bird species recorded. Closer to town, several RV parks have on-site golf, swimming pools, and stocked fishing lakes, and date farms north toward Mecca are an easy day trip.

Imperial has two very different camping seasons. From roughly late October through April, daytime highs are mild and nights are cool, drawing snowbirds from the northern U.S. and Canada into long-stay RV parks across the valley. This is also the active season for surrounding public lands: Anza-Borrego accepts campground reservations from October 1 through April 30, and BLM permits are required at the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area between October 1 and April 15 each year, though day-use spots like Osborne Overlook, Plank Road, Buttercup Ranger Station, and the Watchable Wildlife Area do not require a permit. Summer is the off-season for a reason. Daytime highs regularly push past 110 degrees Fahrenheit in July and August, and California State Parks guidance notes that desert temperatures can reach those levels in summer, so visiting between November and April is generally recommended. State-park reservation windows also shift: at Salton Sea State Recreation Area, campsites can be reserved October through May, while camping is first-come, first-served during the summer months from June through September.

Most RV parks in the Imperial area are full-hookup, pad-style properties oriented toward longer winter stays rather than weekend tourism. Expect paved or gravel sites, pull-throughs sized for larger rigs, swimming pools, laundry, and clubhouse amenities, with a strong 55-plus demographic at several parks. Cell coverage is generally reliable across the valley. Shade is limited, so awnings and reflective window covers matter, especially in shoulder-season heat. Public-land options are different in character. Anza-Borrego mixes a few developed campgrounds with extensive backcountry and roadside camping; at Tamarisk Grove, campers should note that the water is not potable. The Imperial Sand Dunes are loud, social, and OHV-focused on holiday weekends, and quiet during weekdays. Flash flooding is possible in washes during rain events, and summer heat is genuinely dangerous, so carry extra water and plan driving and hiking for early morning.
